Now they say it was Horne that the Twins want. Everyday it's a different name which means to me that nobody really knows what the discussions have been. I did hear weeks ago that they had backed off Kennedy though. "The Twins had been pushing the Yankees to include Alan Horne along with fellow righthander Phil Hughes and centerfielder Melky Cabrera, rather than Hughes, Cabrera and a lesser prospect. The Yankees would not acquiesce." "Steinbrenner was somewhat cryptic yesterday, saying: "It has nothing to do with their demands. It has to do with whether or not I want to do it. Their demands are not excessive. I don't know if I want to give anything." http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/yankees/ny-spyanks165503383dec16,0,416326.story
Interesting. I had no idea he was that into the business. Love them or hate them, they are a family of businesspeople. I've always considered getting into horse racing. My wife loves riding, and my brother got into going to the track a couple years back. If I could just find the time, I'd probably get into it myself. Horses are just cool.
Cashman obviously still holds an ear in the office. Good. While Santana is a nice to have, keeping the youth is more important.
Which is also why all this talk of "Hank making ARod come crawling back" is rubbish. Hank had far less to do with it than did Goldman Sachs and its share of YES. Goldman's share is on the market, and the last thing it needs is the crown jewel of the YES package to go in the tank before a buyer is found.
Last I heard and who really knows, they are only looking to sell the 10% not owned but either the Yankees or Goldman. Still, it is valued at over 3 billion which means the Yankees share is worth more then the team itself and that's worth 1.2 billion. Like I said, the Yankees are making money and increasing value to their holdings every which way you look at it. On another note and to go along with what you just said, as much as I hate Boras he was right when he said that somebody like Arod does make the team money a few different ways. The Yankees never had 4 million in attendance until the year he got here. Now they are over 4 every year. YES has had skyrocketing revenues since he got here too. How much that all adds up to, who knows but I bet it more then pays his salary and then some.
The fact is the Steinbrenners are more fluff than substance. George made a killing for buying the Yankees for the price he did; but he is far from being the richest major league owner. In fact, I saw an article in Forbes last week that Fred Wilpon owner of the Mets is worth six times more than George and family. He just spends his money, lets say, more frugally.
thats why all the bullshit remarks about about the yankees being able to afford more than any other team by non-yankee fans are garbage. George just likes to spend it on his team...thank god for the steinbrenners....
Is this where we are now? The Wilpons have more money than the Steinbrenners? Christ Joe.... seriously ...
Fred Wilpon founded Sterling Equities in 1972. He is the principal owner and partner. Sterling Equities is a privately owned MULTI BILLION dollar real estate conglomerate today. Just google it. They do world-wide construction and development, etc. in Saudi Arabia, etc. The Mets are not one of his principle holdings. Just one of his toys. Steinbrenner, no lack of respect here, has 95% of his assets in the Yankees. The Mets, if they lose money, are just a tax write-off to the Wilpons.
As a Met fan why are you bragging about this? It certainly is pretty evident that the Steinbrenners care alot more about the Yankees then the Wilpons care about the Mets from how they run the team.
Darn. Not bragging. Just stating a fact. I only wish that the Wilpons had their blood in the team, but it is just a side adventure with the family.
Yeah, seriously. And the guy who owns the Twins is worth more then all the owners combined. See where it gets them. They get rid of their start faster then the Marlins. Nothing to brag about joe.
Darn (or should I say Don). Not bragging. Just setting the record straight. I wish the Wilpon family had as much as interest in the Mets as the Steinbrenners have in the Yankees. But there is MIS UNDERSTANDING that the Yankees have unlimited financial resources, while the Mets HAVE TO watch their budget. That could not be further from the truth. Google---Sterling Equities
I wasn't doubting it... I was saying who cares? It makes it worse for the Mets because the Wilpons have more money the than Steinbrenners to spend on their team and don't...
I actually almost worked for Sterling Equities 3 years ago, right about this time. One of the benefits of being an employee would have been going to Mets games. I really had to bite my tongue.
