I don't even want Giambi as the DH. I want him gone. Matsui weakens us if he's gone only if Melky is gone too. That puts Damon in center and no one in left. With no other first baseman, all we have at first is Giambi. That's a terrible outfield, and no defense at first. That's my problem. Trust me, I can do without Matsui if we can round out the lineup/defense otherwise. Hell, I'm not attached to anyone who isn't named Jeter, Rodriguez, Posada, Rivera, Pettitte, Hughes, or Chamberlain. (Maybe Cano, but he can be really frustrating.) Everyone else is available to go otherwise. I just want to be sure we can make up for whoever we get rid of, that's all.
I dont buy that the matsui thing has anything to do with the santana thing.....its not like the yanks are gonna get someone from S.F in return for matsui that will allow us to keep hughes and get santana......I also think the twins told the yankees to shove melky up their asses.......I dont see us getting santana although I want them to....but I htink we can make a nice little trade by getting this fuckin matsui outta here and maybe pick up a couple young arms.....and agree with you that giamblaco cannot play first ever....ever
Current batting order: (1) Johnny Damon, LF; (2) Derek Jeter, SS; (3) Bobby Abreu, RF; (4) Alex Rodriguez, 3B; (5) Jorge Posada, C; (6) Hideki Matsui or Jason Giambi, DH; (7) Robinson Cano, 2B; (8) Wilson Betemit or Shelley Duncan, 1B; (9) Melky Cabrera, CF. New York's core players are getting older, but they looked quite spry last year on the way to leading the majors in runs (968), batting average (.290), on-base percentage (.366) and slugging percentage (.463). The philosophy remains the same in the Bronx: Wear 'em down, then take 'em deep. The Yankees ranked fourth in the majors with 637 walks, and were the only AL club to hit 200 homers. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/hotstove07/columns/story?columnist=crasnick_jerry&id=3151453 offense is not our concern, its PITCHING.
^yup yup yup...we could easily do without matsui....although the giants got rowand as you shared in the other thread
Interesting that this guy is rating Kennedy above Hughes and he played with both last year. http://www.twincities.com/walters
Not surprisingly, the Yankees are back in the Santana hunt now that Haren is off the board. The Yankees and Twins have had "a couple of brief calls" recently to discuss a potential trade for Johan Santana, Hank Steinbrenner said Friday, and the door is "not closed" for the Yanks to acquire the superlative lefty. "It's up to Minnesota what they want to do and I assume they're still thinking about trading him," Steinbrenner said. "As far as what I'm going to do, I don't know. There's been a couple of brief calls. The door's not closed. "I'm still thinking about it." http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/b...hank_steinbrenner_yankees_chat_up_twins_.html http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/12519816.html One of those articles indicate the reason they were trying to trade Matsui was to clear some money. If nothing else, staying in the hunt insures Boston won't get him cheap. Boston staying in insures the Yankees won't either. Really need a third team to come in and scoop him up.
Nice to have the ability to do that. Nobody can ever guess what you really have planned. Just like how the GMs act just prior to the NFL draft.
No surprise but this at least makes it official. "The agent for Johan Santana has told the Yankees, Red Sox and other teams interested in Twins star pitcher that the price to sign him is a minimum of seven years at $20 million per year, for a total of $140 million guaranteed." Also says they still want Buchholz and Ellsbury from the Sox. http://www.startribune.com/sports/vikings/12493231.html
No thank you...Anything more than 4 years with an option 5th year for a FA pitcher is nuts these days... the Sox can have him....
I agree but that won't change a thing. Somebody will give it to him and I'm afraid it could be us. I've been thinking, knowing how it seems the Yankees act. They will feel, for some stupid reason, that they owe the fans something because of all the Yankee names listed in the Mitchell report. That something will end up being Santana. I also read today that they are interested in Prior (along with 9 other teams). Why, I have no idea unless they think he can set up. He does get a lot of strikeouts.
If they're worried about percecption after the roid scandal the best thing they can do is hold on to their youth to show talent developed the proper way...
Just wondering, isn't this tampering? Any other GM/team rep never mentions specific names that they're involved in trade discussions for. Also, Isn't that Cashman's job?
That article is BS, the Giants actually started the talks by saying they wanted to trade a young pitcher (Cain,Lohry) to get Matsui because they had a void in the OF. Now that they have signed Rowand there is no need for Mastui so this isn't happening. As far as the deadline; I thought it was common knowledge that this was just the deadline for the winter meetings. I still think the Yankees will cave and send Hughes and Kennedy to the Twins and signing Johan to the long contract. What Hank fails to realize is that right now the Twins hold all the cards. 11 months from now things will be different but right now he is not in conrol and I think he is panicing.
No, it's not tampering since the Twins have been very public about trading him. If they hadn't of been then it probably would be tampering, yes.
I think (hope) that he is just making sure the Sox won't get him cheap. I'm sure both sides would prefer a third party step in and make a deal.
As much as baseball needs that to happen it doesn't appear likely. Mets: Would like to make a move but don't have the horses to do so Dodgers: have the horses but McCourt is a cheap SOB Angels: Have the horses but seem content with what they have Mariners: Not enough to send Minni Everybody else: Forget it......
