This is pretty funny. I was just watching Sportscenter and they were saying both the Yankees and Red Sox have pretty much moved on from Minnesota to Oakland and both are now trying to land Haren. The obvious reason being that he will only cost 16 million over the next 3 years. It will be great if Minnesota can't trade Santana now and lose him for nothing at the end of the year.

Looks like the Yankees may get Santana after all. They have now included Hughes or so goes the rumors.

    "Santana sweepstakes could be over
Yankees appear willing to include Hughes in package"

" The New York Yankees may now be the frontrunners in the Johan Santana sweepstakes.

Reluctantly, the Yankees seem prepared to include young right-hander Phil Hughes in a three-player package for baseball's best pitcher. Outfielder Melky Cabrera and an undetermined player would also be included in the trade."

At this point I'm not sure I'm real thrilled about it anymore.

Of course Boston could come back and include Buchholz and Ellsbury which would trump them but I don't see that happening.

Now I really hope Pettitte comes back.

Have to wonder what they will do for a center fielder if this goes down.

If that's true, then it's still a win for the Sox. Either they would get him on their terms, or force the Yankees to give up more than they wanted to to get him. I'd be pretty OK with that.

    This trade is awful..

If Santana wins 19 games and hughes wins 15, is that worth losing Melky?

This is really about the post season and has nothing to do with the regular season.

Besides, they will get another CF. Rowland, Jones or promote one of the kids on the farm. Jackson or Tabata maybe. I think one of them plays center. Of course they could always put Damon or Matsui back there as unappealing as that is. At least they wouldn't be paying somebody 12 million a year to be a part time DH.

Melky was always going to be part of this trade, that shouldn't surprise you. It was just a question of whether or not they could get it done with Kennedy or Hughes.

The thing I like best about this is that the third player is going to be a second tier pitcher of which we have an abundance. That will leave our position players on the farm intact.

Like I said, I would prefer he just go to the Dodgers or some other NL team. And it isn't Boston forcing the Yankees to give up more then they want, it's Minnesota. Boston hasn't offered anything the Twins want yet but that could change today.

I'm not sure Boston was ever serious, I have a feeling their plan all along was to make the Yanks spend more than they wanted to.

Im assuming you guys are just getting a little sentimental here as the deal nears.....once you start using your head instead of your heart you realize again that one of the best pitchers in baseball for a mediocre outfielder and a completely unproven pitcher is a deal that you must do

If Santana starts two games in a five game series instead of hughes is it worth a 270 hitter with no pop?

I have never seen so much love for an average player like Yankee fans love for Melky. Good fielding CFs with no power are a dime a dozen, ace pitchers in their prime are not. If this rumor is true you will essentially be getting the best pitcher in the game for a young pitcher you could only hope and pray becomes half the pitcher Santana has become. If I hear one more Yankee fan complain about having to give up Cabrera I'm going to scream.

Someone on the Met thread did an interesting comparison between Melky, Ryan Church and Cocoa.
