"We" demanded a more competitive team and the team spent big to compete this year. Revis, Skrine, Gilchrist, Cro, Carpenter, Fitz, Marshall. Couple that with contracts coming due for Wilk, Ivory, Powell, Snacks etc and you can quickly see why we have a cap problem. Last year was the year to win. We are going to be a much different team next year.
They can restructure a few more deals to create some room but won't be major players in FA this year. As expected after the splurge last offseason. Pretty simple really. Also nobody expected to be signing Fitz for starter money, but he played well.
Ferguson is a major problem for he doesn't even deserve 50% of what he'll get next year. Moves to clear space could still come from restructures of the top guys and cuts of Breno, Cumberland, and Kerley.
Yeah. It's crazy right. The Jets make hundreds of millions dollars through player services and they want to get paid? Who would have thought? Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
This is not cap hell... Damn, I forgot the panic that takes place with this fanbase if we don't go crazy every year in FA. News flash for those already feeling anxious. We probably won't be big spenders this year, we most likely will be bargain bin shoppers in FA this year, of your looking for those big name signings, you are most likely going to be extremely disappointed. We still have some bad contracts on this team that were established before Mac was hired, we also spent a lot last year knowing we would be strapped for cash in the short term so that we have complete flexibility in the long term. Financial stability for the future so that we are not tied down to a player who isn't meeting expectations is how you continue to be a playoff caliber team in this league. This fan base though. Sigh...
I'd like to think today is the day we make our "money moves"... moves to make us some money! if we don't make our cuts and restructures before free agency starts then I'm sorry but Mac has failed us this offseason. Seems like nobody is willing to switch up their contracts because if they were then wth is taking so long to get it done?? I'm not seeing our game plan... tagged Mo and went brain dead lol. But I ranted on the day before free agency last year and a week later I was screaming Magic Mike with praise and a kool-aid smile. so I'm just going to hold on one more day
For people that ragged on Idzik for saving money... this is why he did. For people ragging on Macc for spending said money... you can't have your cake and eat it too.
He has a plan and I have faith in him. He has a high football IQ and has already demonstrated that he understands how to structure contracts. Once the old contracts expire and the team is truly his, we will all see that he has this all planned out. It's going to take until year 4 before we really see him work his magic. I'm feeling really good about the future.
I mean the Raiders, Dolphins, Redskins, Titans, Jags, and Browns always spend big in FA and they win so many super bowels eh have the Packers, Seattle, Pats, and Steelers been big players they have been quiet as well ... relax people !
We didn't sign a future hall of famer on day 1 of free agency? We're done! Might as well not even play this season.
well, those 2 kind of eat up like 20% of our cap. so 'just those 2' is kind of significant. the real issue was not making it a priority to find bricks repacement the last 2 seasons. he really shouldnt be on the team right now.
This is why I kept saying that Mac shouldnt be judged based on what he does with 50 million and a #6 pick.... that his real test will be what he does with big decisions moving forward and how well he does getting starters and depth through his first 3 drafts. but it was sacrilege to say anything bad about mac or give any praise to anything idzik did to help reset things
when we have a qb like the packers, seahwaks, pats or steelers ill relax until then we cant afford to lose talent, draft poorly, or not aquire talent n FA. right now we have a ton of money tied up in either old declining players(Fegerson, mangold) and guys who are vastly overpaid and arent 3 down players(skrine and harris)
restructuring just kicks the ball down the road. In the long run it doesn't solve anything. Like ChrebetCrunch said, we still have some bad contracts Macc has to work through before the team becomes his. Restructuring someone like 'Brick just adds a few years to an old contract. Macc may have to do it, but he'd probably like to be done with some of these bloated contracts as soon as possible.
Basically, - 7 drafts (2008 to 2014). EDIT -- you can make an exception for the 2011 draft that got us Wilkerson, Powell & Kerley. A 2nd rounder was used that year in a trade for Cro.
It is my understanding that Macc more or less had to spend big last year, and other than for the apparent consideration that Cromartie was playing hurt for a good chunk of the year, I think the money was mostly well spent. His real problem going forward is the lack of talent left down roster from the previous two GM's, especially Idzik. The Jets do not have a lot of young talent under cheap contracts. Marginal talents like D Davis were so marginal as to be not worth signing when his rookie contract expired. A non-starter who has started in the past like Allen also looks like he's not going to be retained. This is where Macc is facing a big problem, but the fact that the Jets have this problem is not on him. Still, he's got to fix it.
it's not about going on a spending spree every offseason its about the spending spree that hurt this teams chance to compete going forward. Yea there's a few UFAs I want but I most importantly want us to take care of our own business and Ivory is already gone if we lose Snacks and Fitz I don't see us competing for a playoff spot next year.
