Your current optimism raises my eyebrow.

Ya think so? I know Washington and Smith are fast but they're not starting. They're either gonna be on special teams or "special plays". Coles/JMac/Crotchery are not speedsters nor do they scare anyone. If this is what passes for speed in JetLand these days, God help us..

Honestly, there's no one anywhere on the Jets' Roster that scares anybody anytime. We're rebuilding WB. Its like gravity. Don't fight it man, just enjoy the developement without putting undue pressure on either yourself or your expectations regarding the NYJets of New Jersey..

Washington and Smith are going to play a big roll on this team this year. As far as pressure, what pressure. I always feel the Jets have a shot in every game. I remeber my friends who were Giant fans laughing at me for not going out and playing football when the Jets were in the SB. I was 14 and nervous before that game but I actually thought they could win. I was tranfixed and hooked for life. I'm honest about what I see and excited at the same time. When ever I see the White on White Unis I see the 68 NY Jets a great football team. This team has a long way to go to be great but who knows maybe we have a couple of great players who are about to step into the spotlight and take this team for a ride? I don't know but I think we have a potential real good D and that gives us a shot to be good. In todays NFL good makes the playoffs.

After I read this I checked the calendar to make sure it wasnt April 1st. Winston, you are without a doubt one of the better posters here, and I always respect your opinion whether I agree or not...but....this is easily your worst post ever(or at least since ive been around).....right in the beginning when you say that the running game isnt as good, you killed your own argument. Its like sayin "well I know our pitching sucks, but I thik we can win the world series"....nah man...this team is no where near as good...we have zero running game, end of story....Chads worse, coles is way worse....and we have 2 rookies starting on the O-line...cmon dude, you know better than that

Coles wasn't on the 04 team, McCariens was the No. 1 and Moss was hurt and played like a wuss all year. Granted we had Martin and Jordan but we haven't seen what Barlow can do yet and we have some other skills at RB we didn't have in 04 namely Leon aka Bruce Harper. Penny had a torn rotator cuff in the 04 playoffs and Quincy on crack Carter was the backup.

We also don't have the 1,000 pound anchor holding this team back. I can't emphasis enough how much removing Herm from Hempstead is going to help this team.

I think 6-10 is very realistic. I've posted it before, but we were 4-12 last year, and should have/could have won the second game vs. Miami, the N.O. home game and the S.D. game at home.

    4-12

Three of the teams we beat last year are on our schedule again (Miami, Buffalo, Oakland). We never lose 2 to Miami. And we can pick up the '05 win vs. T.B. by beating G.B.

    5-11

Between the Lions, Houston and Minnesota, we should take at least one game.

    6-10

I say we take the game vs. Cleveland or a game vs. New England. I really feel that New England's due to lose a game vs. us at some point, and without Herm plotting on the blackboard, I like our chances. Even if we get swept by N.E. and lose to Cleveland, we might find that win vs. the Titans.

And god forbid we stay healthy, a win here or there could push us closer to .500 in a year that we are rebuilding.

Folks are forgetting about Tim Dwight... IF he is healthy, he offers a nice stretch the field option for us. The guy is still fast. The offense looked better agaisnt Washington, but don't forget, the Giants have one of the best D units in the NFL... that front seven is very very good, especially on passing downs, and they supplement all those pass rush specialists with some blitzing. They have gone 10+ quarters in the preseason without giving up a TD.

I agree with Winston on the Jets defensive unit. Still concerned about DRob and depth at NT, but other than that, this defense could be very tough to score on this year, especially if the offense avoids turnovers and is good enough to get good field position. One thing that has me optomistic about the D is the fact that Mangini said they will change the schemes and game plans up against each opponent... and that 3 man rush against the Giants confounded their offense, and Manning in particular.

BUT... the offense. I can only hope they are holding their cards close, because this looks like Herm ball so far. Teams are going to play us very close to the line, taking away those quick outside hits which are worrisome in the potential for INT for TD possibilities. Unless Schotty and Mangini do enough to keep those defense backed off a little, the running game and short passing game won't be effective.

The RB's had better learn how to pick up a blitz, and soon. Our TE's seem unable to get behind the LB's when they play up, often a good way to soften up D's that crowd the box.

I think the O will have a hard time scoring two TD's a game. I don't expect to see the Jets put up any more than 10 points against teams like NE and Chicago. If we have any chance to win those games, we'll need some scoring from the D/Special Teams I think. The D has come together faster than I thought, so I've gone from looking for 5 to 6 wins to thinking 8 isn't impossible... but not very likely.

I like this positive thread, good read and opinion. To keep with the positive feel, I've said this before- we will gain confidence and savvy as the season builds and if we can get out of the gate with visit in Tennesee and pull off the biggest game on our and Mangini's radar- Pats (who's not pumped for that one), we could be heading into Buffullo for a realistic chance to go 3 and 0, this would give huge belief and winstons assesment of this campaign could begin to unfold. Trust me guys, whatever happens this year is dependant on our early schedule.

I've read the whole thread and I'm still not 100% sure whether winston was serious or not...

I suspect we might lose a few that hurt at the time next year, but hope we see enough even in those games to provide optimism. If we make the playoffs I'll be bouncing off the walls.

More than anything though, I'm trying to go in to the season with an open mind and just enjoy it as it is presented to me. (in high definition?)

Worst case were 2 and 3 going into the Miami game we come out 3 & 3 with a 2 & 1 division record. We have 8 winnable games in the last 10. A lot depends on health but that goes for our opponents as well.

Sorry Win cannot support U on this one. I could give lots of reasons why I disagree from Shotty to RB to QB to O & DLine, DBF, TEs, WRs & on & on. However, I hope in the end you are more correct then me.

True. I also think that comparing this year's team to another year's team as a reason for why we'll have a good record is somewhat unrealistic. There are too many direct influencing factors that differ to restrict the consideration to the relative qualities of two groups of players at different times.

I'd love to see us at 3-2, but 2-3 is also acceptable.

No doubt we aren't a real SB team but I really believe the league is awful and there are only a handful of teams who have a QB who is a real offensive weapon capable of dominating games against solid teams. The playoffs in this league is not out of the question especially since we play a schedule of teams with question marks.

Unless Schottenheimer has been holding back on the playcalling, I just don't see it on offense. On defense, the gaping hole at NT means the defense is going to face alot of running. So far in preseason we've only held the redskins in check. Both tampa and the gints ran free on us. Yes they didn't surrender a ton of points, but if they don't tame the run, the defense is gonna be very tired come the 10th game of the season and after that it'll just fold. I love the Jets and am optimistic as hell this time of year, but that cynic in me is telling me it's going to be a long year.

Bit of a bizzare post here. Even if I agreed that the Jets had a SB caliber defense(which I don't) the offense doesn't seem capable of winning many games. I know it's "just preseason" but the performance of the Jets offense last Friday was an abomination. I'm more then willing to give the CS some slack but I'm not prepared to swallow that they're somehow "throwing" the preseason to keep teams off guard. And that would be the only way I could say that the Jets might be a team that won more then 5 or 6 games.

Ah so by subtracting all the garbage out there you are saying we will bubble up to be the best of the worst if I understand you correctly.

The Giants may have the best D that we face all year? They have one of the 2 or 3 best RB in the league and an incredible WR/TE corp with a great passing scheme and we held them to squat with our first unit. The Giants are a legit SB team this year and our first team played ball with them. Granted the O looked horrible but how many front 7's like the Giants are we going to face this year? We ran the ball up the middle on a pretty good Washington D, we are going to face a lot of very mediocre defenses this year.
