I certainly like the direction that the defense is going in. But we have a lot of young players on this roster on both sides of the ball. The offensive line and their lack of experience is going to hurt us for at least the first few weeks. If we are going to score points, we will also need to run the ball at least semi-effectively. I believe in Chad (providing he stays healthy), but he is still no John Elway. I sure would like to see it happen for us though.
The D in 04 was far from lights out we have a much better secondary and I would argue our LB corp is also much better. Abe was a factor in several games but he didn't play down the stretch and Von Ryan is a much better DE than Thomas and Thomas has a chance to be an excellent OLB certainly he is going to be a huge upgrade over Brown.
right now, i think the players are better, but not the team. not with a new coaching staff, new system, etc. i've been drinking; what's that saying about the sum of the parts.... cheers
New defense, new coaches, no Martin, Pennington coming of the surgery, patchy O-line..... don't know bro.... I think we're taking steps in the right direction, but there's too much new stuff going on for an immediate impact. And I don't really see the Dolphins taking much of a step back, either.
How about (for once) the defense carry us for a while. I think that we can win 8 to 10. The NFL is a funny league. But, the defense really has to overachieve something our defense has not done in years imo.
We have a great shot to beat TN and Buffalo in the first 3 weeks of the season. Let's see if we can play a little ball with NE, Ind and Jax before we cry uncle. We steal one of those games and this team is 3 and 2 facing Miami in week 6 this board is going to be going nuts.
no, but i do not see any possible optimistic hopes until clemmens starts. the egg is a liability, not an asset. he may be auditioning, but i'd rather have him do that on somebody else's roster.:shit:
You know your stoked when you pay 280 bucks to watch a most likely losing Jets season. :jets: Hey, I'm only 23. I'm not Mr. Moneybags yet.
There's this beer Iv'e had. It's called Magic Hat: Blind Faith. I believe that's what you got going for Clemmens right now.
I could give 2 shits about the upcoming losses in the 2006 season. I'm more concerned with watching the maturation of Mangini as a coach and the development of the young players and the team as a whole. It'll be a very successful season if we see considerable growth with the team from Week 1 to Week 17
I don't disagree with you on Pennington's arm but he is a pro and he's smart and he's a coaches son. He will get every one lined up correctly he will get the plays off on time and he is a master at misdirection and we have some speed guys to use now for misdirection. We didn't see any of that in preseason, we will see tons of screens and play fakes and there is nobody better than Pennington at that. On top of that we have solid back ups for him when the time comes and the O is up to speed.
I agree with a lot of what you said and I love the comparison. I would also agree that the team now is a lot better and has many elss question marks than the team that started the 2004 season. But I would not say we are better than the team that finished the season even with a one armed Penniongton playing at the end of the season. The reason I would take the end of the year 2004 team is a team is often good not because of its talent but because of its confidence and heart. Both heart and confidence feed on each other. The 2004 jets had a very favorable openning schedule that helped a bad team build up a great deal of confidence. This team does not have anywhere near that confidence yet plus we are learning new offensive and defensive systems. Our defense is certainly the best its been since 2001 and the offense well how much worse can it be than it has been the last 5 years. Yes Mawae to mangold is a loss but anyone replacing of Fabini is a big upgrade. Moss' ability to make big plays might be the biggest loss from the 2004 season. Although, the biggest loss on offense might not be the talent but the leadership of Martin and Mawae. While I agree with you that we are better talent wise now than the 2004 team especially the one that entered the season we don't have the continuity, heart and confidence that team had. Regardless of my opinions, very nice post.
I'm looking forward to the regular season as well. Not so much with a jaded point of view but with a longterm vision. We all know Chad isn't Mr. Right but he is Mr. Right Now as far as the QB position goes. Mangini had no choice but to start Pennington consider the calibre (or lack thereof) of the "competition" bought in. Not drafting a Marquee QB was no fluke. Can you imagine the uproar if Jay Cutler or Matt Leinart actually outperformed Pennington during the preseason? Mangini didn't need the Qb controversy. Pennington might be another Phil Simms, who spent the earlier parts of his career on the mend as well. If he leads this team to 5 wins or better, Mangini has something to build upon. Can't blame him for hedging his bet. Sorry Winston, but you forget that the rest of the division has also improved along with the Jets and we have one gaping hole... We have no offense. No, we have no speed either and when teams stop biting on the trick plays, we're gonna get our asses handed to us on offense. Like JayWayne said, our defense will be worn down before game's end in most cases. Hopefully, Mangini can defuse any division that might occur with a defense that will in all likelyhood, play almost 35 mins/game for 16 games.. This team is in rebuilding mode and that's enough for me to re-up my DirecTV contract. Not enough to go SuperFan but hey, I'm just praying the Jets aren't so boring on offense that I fall asleep on the couch and hit my head nodding off of the living room table..
We have speed on O this year. Don't underestimate Barlow he is big and fast and Washington and Smith are both fast and elusive. I'm not a fan of Blaylock but he has decent speed also. We have more speed on this O than at any time in the last 5 years.
