I tend to agree with this, as we have to remember we have seen the start of D Revis play slipping. The Jets have him for two more years at minimum , and you can't just put him on the other team top wr , and forget about him.( he's going to need help occasionally). That makes CB position a big concern.( might give Cromartie take 3 million per year offer ( 5 million savings) , or you're going to get cut . Choice is up to you.
I'm a firm believer that the Wilkerson camp is going to have to take a home town discount for him to stay in NY. Only they know what the rock bottom price is for him to stay. In capitalistic Amercia I applaud firm negotiations, as a Jets fan I'd hate to see him go if they can't comprise.
Not trying to derail, but just curious ... Who is more important to the defense Revis or Mo? I think Mo Anyway, hope they find a way to lock up Mo and snacks. Luckily we are deep at dline. Would suck to see #96 go.
Unless you can find a trading partner for Revis his entire salary is guaranteed so we don't get to unchoose Revis at this point.
How about a sign and trade with either the Giants or Bears or 49ers all who have huge cap space, a big need for a monster DE and 2 have a GM on the hotseat Jets trade Mo, their 1st rd pick, their 2nd rd pick and their 3rd rd pick for the other teams 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th. The other team which needs to make a splash only loses a pick in the 5th round and fills a big need. Jets move from 20 to 7,10 or 11 in the first 3 rounds and get a 5th to make up for our missing 6th. Sounds to me like a win-win
Now plays Devil advocate - just imagine you were one of those fans from those team you mention. Your team offered that much, and was willing to pay him big money too. What is the chance you want your Gm fired . Nobody offer anything remotely close to that for Muhammad Wilkerson. Very strong defense line in this draft , and some quality defense line in Fa , is going to make it even harder to get anything decent for him.( now supply was scarce , they might have had a better chance). The Jets want Wilkerson than find a way to sign him to a long term contract, if not than let him leave in free agency.( those are the two realistic choices).
If by "sign and trade" you mean a "franchise tag and trade" ok, because that's the only way I believe they can trade him. If they can sign him to a reasonable deal, then why trade him? Still, that sounds interesting, if not intriguing. At #7, if the CBS/Draft Scout and/or Great Blue North boards are even close to accurate, they'd have a shot to get Ronnie Stanley or Laquon Treadwell, but would that be good enough to pass on potentially a choice between Jaylon Smith, Noah Spence and Leonard Floyd, either of whom could be the pass rusher the Jets need or Reggie Ragland? At #39 (?) they could possibly get Shon Coleman, OT or Josh Doctson, WR. At #71 (?) they could possibly get Scooby Wright, Kenneth Dixon or Jordan Jenkins. Staying put, in the 2nd round the Jets could possibly have a choice between Devontae Booker, Alex Collins, Jayron Kearse or Pharoah Cooper. In the 3rd round the Jest could possibly have a choice between Paul Perkins, Scooby Wright, and Kenny Lawlor. Of course, the draft never follows those boards, and the options may not be nearly as good, but comparing the two choices, I think I'd pass on that trade, unless the Jets could trade down in the 1st and still get one of Smith, Spence or Floyd as the BPA.
I thought out this trade with the other teams in mind. Unless JPP can regrow his hand or you're willing to deal with James Hardy Drama then Mo is heads above the rest of the DEs in FA. Would I like it if my GM traded in essence Myles Jack for Reggie Ragland and Mo.... yeah I'd be pretty f'ing ecstatic. Losing 10 spots in the 2nd and 3rd imo isn't a huge drop off and certainly worth it.
I disagree. Even with a strong draft, those players are all question marks. Mo is a Pro Bowl caliber player, with great character and production. The Jets could get more for him tagging him and trading him than a compensatory 3rd round pick.
All of those positions are below philly and the saints both of which have had QBs in mocks (I disagree but whatever) so a trade with someone that wants a top QB is a possability. I don't believe Mo will be available at a reasonable price and I'm sure any trade will be for a long term Mo.
If they actually entertained the ridiculous thought of trading Mo, it would prove once again, sadly, that this organization is not serious about going all out for a championship. And like Keyshawn, Vilma, and Revis before him (just off the top of my head), he would go on to win a SB with some other team. We need to keep the core of this team in place, we have champions here that need to be crowned! We were so close this year, the only thing that stopped us was Rex!
I think your bolded statement is the only certainty regarding Mo. No team is gonna trade for him unless they can sign him long term, and I don't think he's gonna be reasonable.
http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/02/nfl_mock_draft_2016_georgias_leonard_floyd_to_jets.html I just saw an article on the Star Ledger, where Dane Brugler of CBS Draft Scout claims that 5 edge rushers will be going in the top 20. If that happens, I'm not sure that the Jets would take Floyd even as much as they need an edge rusher. My reasoning is that if last year was any indication, Mac goes with BAP in the 1st round. If all four of those pass rushers that Brugler has going in the top 19, are taken, it's going to push down some better players at other positions than Floyd.
If you are the Giants, JPP got $14 mil last year. Paying Mo $15 mil this year will not seem like much of a difference in terms of cap space. The fact that he is a bigger, younger guy who did NOT blow up his hand is a plus.
Take this with a grain of salt: NYJets on snapchat (their official account) just played a guess who with two different players shadows. The following image filled in Powell and the next was Snacks. Could have been Ivory and Wilk but instead it was these two... We'll see if it means anything lol.
My point is that I want him to help US win a SB, not some other team! It just seems like the biggest stars eventually get their rings, even if they have to wait for the loser franchises to trade them to the winners. (I know there are exceptions like Marino, but most big stars seem to eventually get their rings). I'm sick of us always being the "farm team" for the elite franchises, drafting and grooming star players only to trade them or let them sign with winning franchises before we can accumulate enough of them to win a championship ourselves!
So you're saying that perennial favorites like the Packers and the Patriots and maybe the Seahawks as of late build there teams by signing high priced talent in free agency?
