You're probably right? It looked like Mangini really liked him and Crennel is a pretty sharp defensive coach. I really liked Strait in college, tough heady player. I just have a feeling he is going to be a pretty good pro. You can't teach speed, but he is a very smart football player with enough size to impose himself on a game in the right system. Right now this is a no brainer. As a long time Jet fan I can't help myself in feeling that this is the begining of Straits career.
Because if we had nothing at all in terms of first and second down, which is what it was starting to look like, then we lose 13 or 14 games next year. Who the heck wants to sit throught a terrible season and have the new regime go into next offseason already fighting for it's life with the piranhas in the NY media? I'm not thrilled by Lee Suggs, but it's pretty clear to me that he is a substantial upgrade over the dregs we had at tailback before we got him.
 I just sensed some sarcasm in his question...couldnt let it go. Sorry. lol. CMAN, I understand where you are coming from too. I just have to believe that Mangini didnt like what he saw in Strait. If you look back...Strait was originally being groomed as a nickel back..and what did the Jets do? They brought back Mickens. Then the talk..and even a start at safety. There has always been major questions regarding his speed (even during the draft talk..speed was the issue). I do agree with your points about the rb position...why not just find out whats on the roster and go with it...Im sure they are just throwing another name into a lackluster hat.
 I hear ya on that. But I really do think this is better than a wash for us. I try to put aside the deals from the past and think positive in these situations
 But don't you get that creepy crawling feeling of "oh sh*t, here we go again you just can't shake?
Suggs will be playing for his career with the Jets. If he doesn't do well here then you probably won't see him around the league much longer (especially if he gets injured again). More competition (and better competition with Suggs here) for the starting RB spot will hopefully propel our backs to overachieve. It's not like we lost much in Strait & as much as I like Houston, I don't think he's ready to be an everydown back in the NFL.
The way I see it, if they went out and got Suggs it just tells you how bad they think the other guys are. Watching the Bucs game, it would be hard to disagree. What if Curtis retires & Washington turns out to be a fumbler? Then where are we? I don't understand the whole 'sit tight' philosophy suggested by many here regarding the RB position. If Mangini sees something bad he shouldn't try to correct it?
we're pretty crowded in our defensive backfield right now, if you ask me. And Suggs is GOOD. He just can't stay healthy. But that's ok, considering we've got Houston and Blaylock to help shoulder the load. i definitely like the move.
Suggs will be keeping the spot warm for either Adrian Peterson, Michael Bush, Kenny Irons, Kenneth Darby, or Marshawn Lynch. It doesn't matter and Strait never showed much of anything. Plus we are pretty loaded in the defensive secondary.
Nah, not really. I just don't have any use for Strait. Considering the awards he earned in college, I saw him as a bust. I know he wasn't drafted high enough to actually be a bust, but there was a lot of hype and potential that never materialized. (And never will, IMO)
I like this trade. Strait had done absolutely nothing in the TC sessions I've gone too, and I've been to five of them. I don't even notice him unless i search for him. This trade spells bad news for Martin. He appears to be finished.
It's a nice deal for our situation. Strait wasn't going to do anything here. He wasn't going to make it as a corner, we've got a boat load of safeties and Mickens is our nickel. Suggs has potential in a position of need. Of course he'll do nothing with Adrian Jones as our RT.
No, honestly I don't. If the Jets made a panic trade and let go of Erik Coleman or Kerry Rhodes or Jerrico Cotchery I'd have that creepy crawly "uh oh" feeling. As it is I see them as having traded a misfit toy for a battered one. You can always patch up the battered one and hope he makes it through the season. the misfit one is just that, misfit for the NFL.
I have mixed feelings about this. I think Suggs has great potential but he needs to stay healthy. I really like Strait and everything I heard he was coming into his own...so I hate to see him leave. I really thought we should have gone after Artose Pinner from Detroit.
So we got a back that is bigger than Houston, faster than Blaylock and just as elusive as Washington? And at this point he is healthy. Strait was a solid nickel and dime cb but when he was in at #1 or #2 I cringed every time. Hope we found a diamond in the rough here. Guess we'll see in the upcoming game.
Here's my take. I think this is a good trade, for several reasons. 1. We didn't have a need at safety. Moreover, Strait might have been a nice college player, but he was essentially a zone corner with a skinny body that wasn't quick enough to make the move to man. It looks as if he was being outperformed by Ray Mickens coming off a torn ACL. Ouch. 2.We already have a lot of young guys vying for a safety spot, and Strait, who has never played the position, did not figure to be much better than an Erik Coleman, Rashad Washington, Andre Maddox, or Kerry Rhodes. If he did, they'd have kept him. 3.Suggs is multi-dimensional- When healthy(which is the major flaw), he is a back who can run between the tackles AND break it to the outside. His feet are great, and he has above average vision. We don't have anyone on our roster who looks like anything more than a third down back other than Houston, and his performance has not been awe inspiring. 4. Running back is IMPORTANT- It seems evident that Chris Brown is going nowhere, and we need a running back of quality more than we need a dimeback. It's the most important position on the field. 5. Derrick Blaylock showed something behind a great offensive line as a backup. Lee Suggs showed something on a crappy team with no offensive line. When you have nothing to lose, you might as well take a chance on a guy who has shown several times that he can get it done at a high level. If he stays healthy he'll be productive. -X-
I guess I had higher hopes for Strait. I do like the way you explained it though. Misfit vs battered
