Lee Suggs holds the NCAA record for most consecutive games with a TD. Think of all the RBs in the history of NCAA football. Suggs holds the record. He has a nose for the endzone - when healthy. He has good size, is fast, is smart, and is a good person on and off the field. Ever seen an interview with him? Whoever said he doesn't fit the Mangini mold is wrong. Anyway, this could be a great pickup for the Jets. If Suggs can stay healthy. Big if.
Yes Suggs is an upgrade over Houston, Houston can't block which will get our QBs killed, and I don't think he will ever be the feature back that you people are hoping he could be, and as for Strait I doubt that he would have won either safety job, the only reason I don't like this deal is that now we are blowing off the RB hole with a stopgap fix.
Not a huge move but decent. I wonder how this effects Martin;s status and if we will hear anythign about it soon.. I still think I would have preferred Betts.
its a risk because of his history for injuries, but I think most of us would agree its worth taking with our current RB situation.
I'm not upset that Strait was traded but the way I see it is depth in the secondary is better than a Rb that can't stay on the field and has not proven to be any better than what they already have at RB..
I think Betts is off the table at this point with the Portis injury. I think the difference between Betts and Suggs is marginal.
College stats mean nothing. Archie Griffin won two Heisman's in a row and check out his pro career. Franco Harris was a blocking back for Lydell Mitchell at Penn State and Harris ends up being the HOFer. Some college running backs don't have a tackler touch them until they are 5 yards downfield because of the dominance of the OL.
Betts is going nowhere after what happened to Portis last night. Deal has some upside with very little downside. Strait wasn't going to start at safety, especially when Coleman gets back from the appendix issue. And I don't think he was going to take the nickel slot from Mickens. So he was depth at best. Not to say we're swimming in depth on this team, but beggars can't be choosers. And if people are worried about the Jets' O-line, Cleveland has much bigger issues. As an aside, I wonder how much input Big Play Ray had on research into Suggs' character.
I guess so, but at worst this is a "break even" type of deal and there is at least a little bit of upside for the Jets.
Here is some info from the sporting news from earlier in the summer. Suggests many of the same issues raised here but has some silver lining. Didn't realize he was this big now... http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=110936 SOMETHING TO PROVE: Lee Suggs is still young, but the clock is ticking on his window to launch a substantial NFL career. Suggs showed brilliant flashes as a 2003 rookie and again in 2004, but injuries nagged him then and finally ruined his entire 2005 campaign. Healthy now, Suggs is the most talented all-around back on the team, and he is itching for a long-term chance to prove it. He opens camp as the No. 2 back behind Reuben Droughns, who is coming off a 1,232-yard year as a strong but limited feature back. Droughns is a tough inside runner, but Suggs can offer more breakaway runs both inside and outside. Suggs has average size, but he was a splendid inside runner at Virginia Tech, and in the NFL has shown the sixth-sense ability to pause for just the right split second until the crease is there. Suggs has bulked up to around 215 pounds, costing him just a shade of his good natural elusiveness. If he stays healthy, he could be the surprise player of 2006. If not, he might have trouble finding an NFL employer going forward.
I think I'm just having a hard time dealing with the fact that we went from the ultimate workhorse RB in CMart to now the complete opposite in Suggs.
I wasn't gonna go there... Looks like the Jets are trying to become the mash unit of the AFC. We have a QB and RB on the mend, a HOF RB that won't play again because of injury, a new RB that's mostly hurt, and a DT that has no cartilage in his knee. Hmmm, now I'm beginning to worry. Why bring in another injury prone player? Especially trading one with as much upside as Strait? The CS/FO must really be worried about the running game to make a dumbassed move like this. Unless of course Suggs stays off the IR... Where have we heard that before???????
OK Suggs is a 4th round pick. ANd I really don;t think his numbers are that impressive. What makes him any more able to carry the load at RB than Houston and Blaylock? Suggs isn;t really that big, about the same as Houston....so is he a speedster or something? I mean if we are tradinf gor him he obviously must have something our current guys don't but it kinda sucks that Houston and Blaylock are now pretty much stuck as number 2 and 3. OK wow he is a fast guys....4.28 and 4.32 in the 40 in college....and in his final year at his pro day ran a 4.27...best thing I have found about him yet... He ran a 4.44 at the combine in 2003 and got a 23 on the Wonderlic http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/profile.php?pyid=59657
I'm not sure why everyone is so convinced that Strait had so much "upside", whatever that even means. Is it just because he was a relatively high draft pick? Remember who was making the selection. Strait has shown little to nothing on the field, IMO that would indicate that he can be a solid player in the NFL.
