Exactly what I was thinking. This kid has talent. We will see if we can bring it out of him. IF we can then score for Tangini if not no loss.
What upside did Strait have? He was small and slow. Not very physical, and he didn't play the position exceptionally well. I think people expected more out of him because he won that best defensive player of the year award in his last year at OU. He never showed so much as a flash over the past 2 years (honestly, who can remember a single play he made?). I'm disappointed that he didn't develop, but he has pretty much been a letdown and we have guys at CB and safety, so if we could get a potential starting RB for him, I don't see the problem.
We have a ton of those upside guys in the secondary such as Coleman x 2, Miller, Rhodes, Washington, etc. and I think Suggs when healthy is an upgrade from Blaylock. Nice trade, IMO.
People are in here complaining about losing our 3rd string cb. ahahahaa dont get me wrong, I like strait. But suggs is a jet now, and come gameday we will all be hoping for him to succeed. so lets just cut the shit.
Strait is entering his 3rd year...cornerback specialist and ummm..head coach Herm Edwards had a chance during those two years to promote him..instead they went outside last year and brought in Ty Law. They went ahead and "promoted" Strait to nickel back. They were so high on him that they went out and signed a 23 year veteran, Ray Mickens. Shows me that Herm and Mangini had something in common..and it wasnt Strait. Strait had surprise cut written all over him..so now we received a potentially good running back...big deal either way.
Not a thing wrong with this trade. They traded from a position of relative strength and brought in a guy at a position where they need help. Not a high risk trade, either. If Suggs fails then big deal. Strait was average and it looked like he wasnt included in the future plans of the secondary. Much, much better than standing pat and doing nothing. If we can get CMart back Suggs takes a great deal of pressure off him and vice versa. Both guys chances of injury are reduced and you have two solid if not spectacular backs.
Makes sense, trade basically fills holes on both teams. Though Strait won't ever amount to much in the pro's, he's one of those players who was much better in college because of the difference. At CB he can essentially only play in a cover-2, and even in that he's not great. He's a bit undersized for a safety, but that's his only real shot IMO to amount to anything. The problem is so far in the pro's in both the regular season, playoffs, pre-season, training camps, practice, etc....he's never shown the same nose for the ball he did in college. If he's able to come to terms and convert to a safety and regain his "nose for the ball" ability, he could be a good safety, otherwise he's just depth at the DB position in general, so don't give me he has so much upside and this and that crap I've seen through most of this thread. He shouldn't have been picked on the first day that year.
I like it, we had a very crowded defensive backfield. Barrett, Dyson, Miller, D. Coleman, Mickens, Rhodes, E. Coleman, Maddox, Smith, Washington, and Strait likely weren't all going to make the team, and since one had to go, we got a big RB with potential to be a good starter and can help us out this year in a bigger area of need.
Not a bad trade at all but only time will tell!! We were crowded in the DB area so it really doesn't hurt us but Suggs has the possibilty to help us. (if he stays healthy)
Strait had alot of upside? What are you out of your mind? That's the problem with alot of Jet fans......Just don't get it.
What Percent of Jet Fans are Clueless? Seriously. The Jets traded a slow, average at best CB converted to Safety cause he can't cover anyone in Strait for a RB whose gonna be their starter. They traded from a positon where they have a million players who do the same thing for a position in which they don't have one starting calibar player. Yet, I have to actually read people saying a) they don't like the trade and b) Strait had all this upside. Get a freakin clue. It's moronic. a) Strait is not a high upside player based on he isn't a great tackler and doesn't have pure NFL speed. b) Suggs is the starter now at RB and a million times better then the three third down backs the Jets have. IT'S THE BIGGEST FREAKIN NO BRAINER TRADE THEY COULD HAVE MADE. WAKE UP CAUSE IT'S EMBARRASSING.
I have a good feeling about this deal. Hopefully I will one day hear our gameday announcers saying that "the key to our opponents victory is slowing down Lee Suggs". Followed by "this is a guy that really any team could have had if they wanted him". This is not a completely outlandish scenario. What is the best possible thing that you can imagine an announcer saying about Strait in a Jets uniform? I promise it does not include the words "key" or "victory" in it.
What is all this talk as if Strait actually did convert to safety. The man was tried there for 2 practices and 1 game, give me a break.
Either Curtis is indeed retiring or the CS has seen enough of our stable of backs to think they don't have any starting material on the roster, so they trade a guy who is on the way out for a wildcard back. I have seen enough of Strait to know the guy will never crack the starting lineup, and I hate the idea of career nickelbacks, although Mickens was always solid for us in that position. We need young players that are constantly challenging to move up the depth chart. Strait will not do that. He has proven so already. And while I don't know diddly about Suggs other than he has his own embroidered seat cushion on the Browns' med-cart, getting a chancy player is better than getting squat. Strait will not help the team move forward in the sense of competitive edge.
That's even worse. That tells you they had even more questions about his ability, if they weren't even sure where he should play.
