I think that's too harsh a judgment. He didn't start playing football until late. He has a ton of talent, is a solid tackler, has good hands, and is learning the ropes. I think he has a good chance of developing into a quality starter.
Becton and Mims both look legit....just stay healthy and they should be very good I’m not as sold on either Davis or Perine. Davis looks fast but he hasn’t really done too much, and not one play yet where you go Wow! He has potential, but so far to me, that’s about it. It’s still way early I get it, so there hope, but it’s more hope than production so far. Perine to me has looked very average....he hasn’t stood out at all....he gets what the line gives him and that’s about it. Haven’t seen breakaway speed or bone crushing power....so far to me he looks like any back you can get in the 4th to 6th rounds. Hall shows promise also....he’s gotten burned a few times but also looks the part, so we’ll see. Mann looks legit. so far I think it looks like a good draft class, and if Becton and Mims stay healthy they could be really really good....
one other thought: if we had drafted Jeudy or whichever other WR with the first pick, who would we have picked in our original slot (let alone our eventual slot) in the second round to obtain a better one two punch than Becton Mims. Whether luck or skill JD delivered
If Davis plays at the top of The D.Contributes to the overall team speed/athleticism, Doesnt get beat over the top & makes the tackles presented to him, thats a very good pick & player. No need to compare to Maye or the anti-Jet.Hes a different kind of safety.More of a deep centerfielder. Not easy to find.
I had about five different replies typed out but I think it’s better for all if I just say sorry and reiterate how terrible of a pick it was.
The wild card is Clark. This is basically a red shirt year since he played at such a small college. But JD the former OL must have seen something in him. If Clark were to develop into a solid starting Guard this would really be a home run draft .....
It may be too early to consider Morgan a bust - usually small school QBs need a year or so to adjust to the NFL. But it’s probably safe to assume he’ll never be a long term starter anywhere....[/QUOTE]
We all assume Morgan will never be much and was a wasted pick. BUT what if JD saw something more, much more in Morgan and took him to become OUR starting QB down the road . JD had already seen Sam play for a season, and PERHAPS JD has already decided Sam's not the long term answer and drafted Morgan to be that guy. And with Sam having another 2 years on his rookie deal, JD can hide Morgan on the PS while he learns the game, runs the scout team, etc. Morgan has a CANNON for an arm, and maybe he has other qualities JD looks for in a QB. But even with the tangibles, Morgan is just too raw to put anywhere except on the PS for his first year. Kinda the whole route Brady took....Belicheck already had 3 QBs including Bledsow with zero need for another QB, but he saw something he liked in Brady and picked him in the late rounds just to have around the team. Then Mo Lewis happened and the rest is history. Same thing coulda happened with JD and Morgan. Of course JD had no way of knowing we'd be going 0-16 and in the running for Trevor Lawrence! Time will tell!
Like I said, I hope I'm wrong. He just seems lost out there. There's no doubt he's physically gifted, but playing safety NFL requires tremendous awareness quick decision making. I just don't see it right now. I'm not at all giving up on him. Perine on the other hand .....
I don't know if Davis looks 'lost' out there. Didn't he lead the team in tackles (10) last week? Gregg might use Davis differently than he used Jamal, so we can't really compare what Jamal did. I know Davis had a nice monster sack that got called back.
He's crazy athletic and closes on the ball QUICK. That alone will keep him on the field. I do think that he looks a bit lost on everything before the tackle. I also don't think it's that alarming... he's a day 2 pick that wasn't supposed to be starting this early in his career. I also didn't know until just now that he's 24 years old.... how?
Some of the talking heads had Miami taking Davis in the middle of the 1st round, and were surprised he fell to us. I didn't know he was 24. He must of been a 5 yr college student!
Reminds me of Tommy Boy... "A lot of people go to college for six years" "Yea they're called doctors" Either way, I'm excited to see what he turns into because he possesses every physical skill imaginable. I do worry that we're gonna let Maye walk which I think would have a huge negative effect on Davis and his development.
When we drafted Davis I thought it was to play FS and let Maye walk. Then the Jamal thing happened, so Davis is in the box. But I think he'd do better playing in space on the back end due to his closing speed.
Looks like he hit on another pick in Bryce Hall. So thats Becton, Mims and Hall. Nice story here. https://www.newyorkjets.com/news/in-bryce-hall-the-jets-may-have-discovered-a-diamond
Don't forget Mann. He is a really good punter. Give Davis time too. I like his potential. Perine looks okay too. 3rd down back at least. Really only Clarke and Zuniga are question marks, but hopefully they can be depth guys in the future. And James Morgan seems like a mistake, but that is okay. Time will tell. Overall, really strong first draft from Joe Douglas.
Correct. Davis is playing a ton as the new rover like role they used Jamal in. I do feel Ashtyn would be better served playing deep, but they moved Maye back to a position that’s better served for him. Right now, it seems the Jets don’t necessarily have a SS on the roster like they used Jamal in, so they are force feeding Davis in the box for now.
