Cromartie has like 67 kids, he can't afford a 15 grand per day fine for missing TC...especially when the team is gonna have less than no interest in giving him a raise.
I would not be shocked at all if we ended up with essentially nobody that improves this team in even a semi-significant way until the draft. Its sad but IMO more than likely the case. Due to all the horrible contracts were involved in with guys who are 35 years old and our reputation around the league we are screwed. Another factor is the ridiculous FA market at the moment regarding the positions of need for us. There is a lack of quality RT, lack of safeties, the only decent pass rusher is gonna ask for 20m a year or plays 4-3, and the impact WR's are being gobbled up quickly by garbage teams throwing ridiculous $$$ at them.
Per NYjets cap: Anyone checking out #Jets "GM" @ACromartie ? Good stuff. Looks like Reggie Nelson, Eric Winston, and Braylon are on his wish list Cro should be our GM...
Due to cap constraints it may be Landry instead of Nelson...which certainly isn't bad but I think Nelson is better in coverage (but if you're gonna have two safeties that suck ass in coverage you might as well have two guys that can break people in half)
I think its the new deal whereby the lower paying teams have to spend more so they are getting the deals done now.
The Pats signed Steve Gregory (FS) to 3 years 8.5 mil. Im not sure who he is, but thats starter money... I would think we offer something like that to Reggie Nelson. This also means they are most likely out of the market for a safety (possibly), which might also free up Laron Landry... If he’s signed for a very low deal, with incentives, I would be for it. Him and Nelson with Eric Smith rotating in and a rookie learning slowly..
Just read that if the Panthers sign Mike Tolbert, they are expected to look to trade RB Jonathan Stewart. I'm a huge Stewart fan. I think he'd be the perfect well rounded back we need. He's poised to breakout, imo.
What will they accept for Stewart? If low round pick like 5th or 6th would suffice, then I think Stewart is a lot better than whoever Jets could bring at that spot (AND Jets have enough compensation picks at that level and below, so it does not hurt them either.)
I was noticing a lot of oddly short contracts like Soliai this off season and thought this was an interesting (for nfl.com) article that goes some way to explaining things. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000...-all-the-rage-with-cap-rising-in-future-years
Gregory is underrated. Hes a clear upgrade for that secondary. While he wont ever be a superstar, id say hes probably in the top of the 3rd tier of safeties. Very reasonable move imo
FYI - I had never heard of him either and was surprised when the signing happened. Supposedly he is a smart fast, but not physical FS, who was playing out of position as a starter at SS. On Patsfans, there were several SD fans who weren't happy about him leaving. So that's encouraging at least. He's also an excellent special teams guy. I of course was disappointed since I wanted Richard Marshall. But based on what little I could find, he's a decent DB, and a vast improvement over what we had last season. At best he's a starter at FS. At worst he's a special teams ace who will play S in certain sub packages.
4 years, 22m for Winston... Wow i cant believe how cheap he went, guy wanted to be #1 paid rt Thank god the fins didnt get him for that price
Damn. If Stewart hits the trading block, we should be all over that shit. He would be a beast for us. He is an actual #1 who is effective on 3rd down. Him with Greene and a little bit of McKnight would be an absolutely awesome backfield. If we could get him for a 4th, I would do it in a heart beat. He’s not even 25 and doesnt have that much wear and tear on him. He would instantly upgrade our offense a ton and Tony Sparano should be salivating knowing he’s available. He has big play potential, receiving ability and is a true power back. I really hope Tanny investigates this opportunity.
