Unless we can trade Pace and or scott, Wimbley is a pipe dream

Cap magic would mean trading scott/pace or mortgaging the future.

In theory we could afford Wimbley, but as a result we would have to back load contracts and give him a huge bonus killing us in future years.

Not interested in giving a monster deal to a guy whose gonna be 29 this season.

Thats how well end up with another Pace

Just a does of reality to my Jet fans. Right now, because of the generosity of the Skins and Cowboys, the Jets have about $16MM in cap space. It would seem like the Jets now have a shot at guys like Landry at S and Brown at OT.

Unfortunately $16MM doesn't get you much these days. Here's a quick breakdown

    $5MM - for the draft
$2MM - a reserve for in season signings due to injuries
    $1.5MM for Maybin
$3MM for Pouha (a very conservative estimate)

Now that was a quick $11.5MM, wasn't it. That leaves the Jets roughly $4.5MM in actual cap space you now have to work with, and you haven't even addressed your OWN FAs

LT, Plex, Leonhart, ESmith, BPoole, all played significant roles for the 2011 Jets. Now I know its doubtful that any will be back but they ALL have to be replaced with upgrades.....hopefully, and you only have $4.5MM to address them, PLUS WR, PLUS RT PLUS back up QB

So you can see, while it seems like a lot, there really isn't much for the Jets to spend on any high end guys. For this FA class the Jets will have to find gems spending nickels and dimes and let others spend the dollars.

BTW- one way for the Jets to solve this issue is to have a MONSTER draft. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Jets have to have 3 or 4 rookies playing significant roles this year.

OK that was the reality check, you can now go back and join Pats fans fantasizing about getting guys like Mario Williams, Vincent Jackson, and Mike Wallace.

Who knows how Tanny adjusts the contracts though. Remember Tone got 1.5 million cap hit last year. Obviously the move has come back to haunt us since we had to keep him this offseason, but it is possible. I don't remember if it was you specifically, but many pats fans were saying no way Sanchez would restructure to take a lower cap hit. Well it happened.

Oh and incentive laden contracts. Sanchez has a 10 million escalator if he wins 4 Super Bowls in the next 5 years. D'Brick has one if he blocks like 5 kicks and 5 punts in his last two years or something ridiculous. Don't doubt Tanny with the numbers, definitely doubt who we actually use them money on. The FO has made mistakes these past couple years with FA philosophies and signings.

One thing is clear all those guys u say we need to resign with the exception of Leonard are not coming back. Now for RT,WR,Backup QB were going thru a a youth infusion. And you and your pat fans cant take that fantasy and shove cause u know its not gonna happen

There is ways to bend the cap a lot. The Steelers do it all the time. Im not worried about our limits.

Sorry to break your bubbles, but the combined salary of Maybin and Pouha do NOT count against the 15M cap space.

Next time, do some research instead of speaking out of your own ass.

It's poorly worded, but that means they have 15 million MINUS whatever Pouha and Maybin's numbers are.

Smith may restructure, but he's under contract and will likely be back. Actually Leonhard is more likely to go, imo, due to his injuries, than Smith.

We have Tanny, who has the commish's number in his back pocket. The cap means nothing to us. We would sign Williams, Jackson AND Wallace, but Maybin, Holmes and Kerley are better.

I'm not to concerned about the cap situation. The bottom line is that the Jets have to focus on team building instead of quick fixes. I don't see many players in free agency that are going to be difference makers so you basically wait out the process and add some solid veteran players on the cheap.

I would like to believe that Tannenbaum has learned his lesson and actually will have 10+ draft picks for the first time since 2006. The core of your team has to be built through the draft. Then you can supplement with free agency, trades and undrafted free agents.

The best organizations hold onto their picks, take advantage of comp draft system and use free agency and trades to supplement.

So much for that "hometown discount", good sign for the Saints though.

Yes it does include it, because the other day we figured the Jets had about 14.4 mil. So Pouha must be making a bout 1.5 mill off the cap.
