As much as I hate the way he has under performed in limited chances, the guy really hasn't had a shot to get his legs under him. Rookie then injuries, I really hope we give him at least one more season to prove himself. Really rooting for this guy after all the hate he is getting, I think he can be a solid pass catching TE.
The last second round draft pick I recall not being worried about making the roster after a poor preseason was Stephen Hill... that worked out well for him.
Amaro is 6'5 265 lbs when compared to Enunwa who's 6'2 225lbs so one would think it's only natural for Amaro to posses a lot more natural run blocking ability. With that said I've stuck up for Amaro this offseason and simply taking a wait & see approach but if he doesn't emerge as a reliable pass catching option I'm all for featuring Enunwa at TE (during obvious pass catching situations). When going 3 WR, 1 TE & 1 HB I'd like to see a lineup of... Brandon Marshall (Outside WR #1). Robby Anderson (Outside WR #2). Eric Decker (Slot Receiver) Quincy Enunwa (Tight End). Matt Forte (HB). With the way things are looking/have played out I believe that lineup above can put Fitzpatrick in strongest position for success (in terms of pass catching options).
One of these years, our GM/CS will use our 1st round pick on a pressing need instead of a defensive player. I just hope I live long enough to see it..Kinda weird that every year, the "BPA" always seems to be a defensive player.
Or coming out of the backfield on either wheel routes, crossing or HB screens. Powell is good at it but Forte's great at catching out of the backfield. Robinson can catch too. Regardless of which HB lined up they'll always be a threat of catching out of the backfield for opposing defenses to think about. Chan Gailey will have unlimited options as an offensive coordinator when dialing up plays.
Yessssss wheeellll routesss "rubs hands together like a fiend" Now we can use that garbage on the other teams. On the other side of the ball I'm looking forward to seeing those plays get blown the hell up by our remodeled LB core.
I hear what you're saying and basically agree. We do have a long streak of taking D players in the 1st round, but that kind of goes with the territory when one has a former DC as HC. The emphasis is going to be more on fixing the D and evaluating D talent. That said, are you saying that a LB who could cover TEs and RBs over the middle wasn't a pressing need? If so, I disagree. If the reports are true about Mac trying a couple of times to trade up for Laremy Tunsil, then he would have taken an offensive player first in this year's draft. We don't know what Mac would have done in the 2014 draft. Would he have kept all 12 picks? Would he have used some of them to move up in the draft? I feel pretty certain that he would have taken a topflight WR prospect, but feel even more certain that he probably would have used some of those picks to get in position to take a QB he liked. Would he have moved up for Blake Bortles? Who knows? That probably would have depended on the cost to move up, or if the Jags were even willing to trade the pick. I feel certain that he wouldn't have taken Manziel. I think he might have taken Teddy Bridgewater. With his eye for value, he probably wouldn't have taken him at #18, but would have probably tried to trade down, or trade back up into the bottom of the 1st round as the Vikings did. Another factor to consider is the types of positions likely to be taken in the first round. Mac is on record as saying that he thinks that one doesn't need to use high draft picks to secured interior OL, that they can be filled with players from the middle, lower rounds and UDFAs. Thus, the offensive positions likely to be taken in the first round are QB, WR, RB, TE and OT. The Jets weren't in position to draft a QB in the first round either last year or this year. Now that they have Petty and Hackenberg, I doubt that he'd consider taking a QB in the 1st round next year even if they were in a position to draft one or close enough to be able to trade up and get one. With Brandon Marshall and Decker, there was no need to use a 1st round pick on a WR last year or this year. There were a few worthy of being taken by the Jets this year, but the need wasn't there. In 2015 Amari Cooper was already taken. Kevin White was a bit risky, and the other receivers would not have been value, BPA or need at #6. With the Jets possibly adding Peake, Anderson and maybe Jalin Marshall this year, I don't see WR being a need in the 1st round next season, either, although one could be the BPA and a great value at the Jets' pick in the 1st round. Most people think that it's not worth it to take a RB in the 1st round any more what with the NFL being a passing league. I agree, so unless there's a real stud who present a great value, I can't see the Jets taking a RB in the 1st round in the forseeable future. Similarly, many people don't think TEs are worthy of 1st round picks. While it's a fairly pressing need, Gailey can make the Jets' offense work without them, and it's doubtful that there will be one who is considered the BPA at the Jets' pick in the 2017 draft. I do think that Mac will seek to address either the LT or RT position in the draft next year. RT is definitely a pressing need. LT may be if Clady can't recover his previous level of play or is injured. Even if Clady has a great year, there's no telling how many more years he will play, and he only signed a one-year contract with the Jets. If he has a great season, he may want more money than the Jets are able or willing to pay, and in any case the Jets will need to get an LT to groom behind him, even if they do re-sign Clady for another 2-3 years. So I think there's a very good chance the Jets will use their 1st round pick on an OT in the next draft. Looking at the D, there are only two positions I could see Mac thinking would be pressing needs, CB and perhaps OLB. With Revis getting older, the Jets probably need to start looking for his replacement, and depending upon how Skrine, Williams, and Burris play this season, it could be a pressing need and CBs can frequently be the BPA in the 1st round. Similarly, pass rusher are always at a premium, and topflight OLB pass rushers are frequently the BPA. Even if Mauldin develops into a quality pass rusher, Mac could take an OLB, but if Mauldin doesn't develop as hoped, then there's a greater chance that Mac could take a an OLB in the 1st round next year. As long as Mac continues to build a strong, deep roster, I'm not going to get too hung up on whether and offensive player or defensive player is taken in the 1st round. If he was able to find our franchise QB in the 2nd or 4th round, and future starting WRs as a 7th round pick and UDFAs, more power to him. That would just prove his knowledge and knack for finding talent in every round. Question: Would you be upset if he did take a CB or OLB in the 1st round next year, but then used the remaining 6 picks all on offense, getting a LT in the 2nd round, a RT in the 3rd round, an OG in the 4th round, a TE in the 5th, and either a couple more OL prospects or a RB and an OL prospect in the last two rounds?
That is quite the dissertation there NC! I actually read all of it too. Now to answer your last question, I would probably have to look at how the play from CB and LB was during the season. If the more pressing need is OLine, then yeah, I would be upset if Mac spent another 1st rd. on D. You can also backfill using FA. Upper echelon talent is in the first round. The Dallas model is a prime example of how to build an OLine. The Jets need to concentrate on their areas of weakness and honestly, we're just not that good from rds.2 to 4 where we always seem to get lucky. BPA doesn't always fill that need as you tend to be overloaded on one unit and light on another. I don't think there's much doubt that the OLine is in immediate need of a youth/talent infusion. The 2017 draft needs to be pointed in that direction. The D can take care of itself for at least a year or so.
If the OL is a disaster this year and Mac takes a CB or OLB in the first round (unless he's guaranteed to be another Revis or Von Miller), I'll be upset too. The thing is, I don't think he would do that. Mac isn't a slave to one way of doing things. He knows the OL is a pressing need and priority. In the draft he balances BPA, value, need, depth of the draft at a position, and isn't the type to fall in love with players. Dallas' model of building an OL is only one way of doing it. It's not the only way, and imo, it's not the best way. Yes, one does need to use a 1st round pick on one's LT (or RT if one's QB is a southpaw). One might also use a 1st or a 2nd round pick on one's RT, but not necessarily. I would almost never use a 1st round pick on an OG or C, and don't think Mac would, either. I think that's a huge waste, and one winds up having too much cap space tied up in the OL and doesn't have it available for playmakers. We've already seen the Jets try that a number of years ago and it didn't work. How many SBs has Dallas won with that OL? For that matter, how many times have they even gone deep into the playoffs?
True. Seems that either Romo is just a tad brittle OR the Dallas OLine seems to be a bit overrated in passpro.
IMO Dallas's OL is a good as advertised, but there's only so much an OL can do when your QB is injury prone.
