Super Bowl-winning QBs who were former 1st round picks: *Jim Plunkett Joe Namath *Len Dawson Bob Griese Terry Bradshaw Jim McMahon Phil Simms *Doug Williams Troy Aikman *Steve Young (supplemental 1st round) *John Elway *Trent Dilfer Ben Roethlisberger *did not win Super Bowl with the team that drafted him
Great points. If you want to blame or knock MT/EM for anything...they basically drafted according to script with the first 3 picks. If anything, they didnt surprise...go out on a limb...any novice football follower knowing the Jets needs would have drafted exactly the way they did. The only surprise they threw at me was that I wasnt surprised at all. I thought they might go Leinart...not because it was the right pick...but because they werent expressing much interest...and I believed there would be a smoke screen or two. There wasnt...they believe you win games in the trenches..and thats what they did.
21 Super Bowls won with a starting QB who was a former 1st round pick 19 Super Bowls won with a starting QB who was not a 1st round pick 13 Super Bowls won with a starting QB who was drafted by that particular team in the 1st round
I count only 21. Super Bowl-winning QBs who were former 1st round picks: *Jim Plunkett (two) Joe Namath (one) *Len Dawson (one) Bob Griese (two) Terry Bradshaw (four) Jim McMahon (one) Phil Simms (one) *Doug Williams (one) Troy Aikman (three) *Steve Young (supplemental 1st round) (one) *John Elway (two) *Trent Dilfer (one) Ben Roethlisberger (one) *did not win Super Bowl with the team that drafted him
Do we look like the bengals or colts to you? When those teams drafted QB's it was because their OLINE's were established already... What you wanted us to do? Draft players that we dont need.... Players that we have already in the roster that will contribute highly, to just draft players from the same position so they can sit and not help? The 2 OLINE men we drafted will start right away, any one else would of sat on the bench. Get it through your head OLINE is the most important cog in a football team, you think palmer and manning are succesful, becuase their oline was bad? No they were good oline, any QB to be succesful needs to have a solid, good or great oline, to win, I thought you would of known that, based on the fact on how our QB's got hurt. With our oline manning or palmer would have not been manning and palmer.
Very well said....you draft OL as you need them and where you see you get the best return. The notion of drafting OL in the later rounds only is utter BS. BTW, the so call play maker theory is BS too. Indy has the "so called ultimate play maker" but they never reach the promised land. Why, bacause they lack the rest of the "so called situation players" that really make the difference in the trenches, on special teams, you name it. We are building a team of overachiever that will give you that on every facet of the game.
Washington Redskins 1981 1. Mark May, T, Pittsburgh 3. Russ Grimm, G, Pittsburgh Not two first rounders, but first two picks and a lot fewer teams...I seem to remember the 'Hogs being pretty good. Didn't matter WHO their QB was...
BOy, he cool-aid is flowing in here. I don't see how you guys can justifty what the jets just did by comparing them to teams like the seahawks who got their linemen over many drafts. Do you not see the difference??? They got their Oline and their Dline lines, or their LB's or their CB's.......... the company line coming for jets fans about manginii is sicking already. And I like Brick or Gold, not blowing threw the top 40 prospects to get both, one would have been more then a enough. And one of the reason Herm was hated was being conservative?????? ROFL.
He went down a few times over that stretch. The Eagles didn't miss a beat until last year.... and I blame last year on a lot more than a QB going down.
Morall played the majority of the snaps in the SB 5. Baltimore Att. Comp. Yds. TD Int. Morrall 15 7 147 0 1
You can say that about any position. Did NE draft a QB high? No Brady was a 6th rd pick so by your logic we should wait until day 2 to take a QB.
I was keeping the list to starters regardless of how long they played. Unitas was 3 of 9 for 88 yards with 1 TD and 2 INTs
Name me one NFL SB team that went to a SB with an OL the quality of the NY JETS 2005 OL? There are plenty of teams that won SB with Ramsey and Pennington quality QB. Manning hasn't gone to a SB and Carson Palmer had a shot to go but his OL got him crippled on the way. You need both and yesterday we drafted both.
The Redskins were 6-10 in 1980. Then Joe Gibbs was hired to be the head coach. They began 1981 in an 0-5 hole and finished 8-8. They won the Super Bowl the following season.
English would be nice. But you just proved their point. The Jets were in an awful and particularly unique situation. Competent GMs and teams draft a D or O lineman every year. They do this to replenish the talent along the line and give depth. There is always someone being groomed. NE, Pitt, Dallas, always draft linemen somewhere in the draft every year. During the past 5 years the past regime barely acknowledged that the Oline existed. So when the line got old and injuries hit, they were screwed. Any other team would have had some young talented guys in the wings to step in. Not Herm/Bradway, they had Gragg, Morley, and Katnick. Because of the situation that was left by the old the regime there was no choice. If you don't like what became necessary this year, next time you see Bradway or Herm say thank you.
In addition, AJ Feeley looked like a stud behind that same line. Miami gave up 2nd rounder for him. Now, he can't hold a roster spot without that line.
