When you have a great pass rusher you only need better corners. When you have no pass rush, the best CB in the league still doesn't give you an elite defense.
The last 5 seasons in Pittsburgh before Cowher: 38 wins, 1 playoff appearance, 1 playoff win. Cowher's first 5 seasons: 53 wins, 5 playoff appearances, 4 playoff wins, 1 Super Bowl appearance. Ok, now the downside is that Bill Cowher is now over 50 and the record for coaches taking over a team after their 50th birthday and wining Super Bowls with that team is poor. Two of the few who did it were in NY though. Weeb with the Jets and Coughlin now twice with the Giants. Because he built some good Colts teams and got lucky in the process. Luck is a big part of the deal.
Where did I say anything about instant gratification? You obviously have reading comprehension problems. If anything, my post indicated that I believe the Jets have not done enough to put Sanchez in a position to succeed!!! I have been a Jets fan my entire life - 39 years and counting - and been to countless exhibitions of horrendous Jets football from the Bubby Brister shuttle pass through the Kotite disaster. I know when people post against the conventional wisdom and group think that it is normal to start with the ad hominem attacks - specifically that the poster is not a true Jets fan. That being said, I don't want the instability in the Jets FO and CS to continue but I am almost a realist. Woody Johnson is not going to sit by for a 2nd season of no playoffs regardless if it is because Revis is hurt or not. And to be honest, the Jets defensive has basically sucked the last 11 games with Revis for all that good that a HOF CB gives you. Revis represents the best and worst of Tannenbaum's personnel strategy and decisions. The Jets trade up and trade away picks for players that provide high level skillsets. This causes higher costs in salcap and doesn't create enough bottom of the roster depth of skilled low cost players. In Revis' case it works great when he is on the field. But when he is hurt and doesn't play the opportunity cost of the draft picks and salary cap it cost to hire the player are absolutely killers. As for Polian or Cowher, I am not saying the Jets SHOULD hire them, I am saying that I believe that becomes a distinct possibility the way things are going. Polian has a pretty good track record building teams - 4 Super Bowl appearances with the Bills and 2 Super Bowls with the Colts, in addition to a NFC Championship appearance by the Panthers in their 2nd year of existence. As for Cowher, I doubt he comes if Polian were to be hired as he wants total control. At least he has a proven track record and you know the team will compete and be prepared. Sure he had his problems in winning a Super Bowl until Big Ben arrived, but if we all recall correctly, the Steelers won that Super Bowl inspite of Ben and not because of him.
