I'm not going to take a stab at who might be the right person to step in were Mangini to go, but at this point I think it's glaringly obvious that Mangini is NOT the guy who's going to get it done. When it's year three and even the players seem to have no clue what direction the team is supposed to be heading in, I'd say that's a pretty clear sign that something is seriously wrong. Yes, he's assembled a very talented group on the field, but so what. Without the right game plan and preparation, individual talent is only going to get so much done. We've seen it time and time again as Jets fans. He may have a great pedigree, and I admit I had very high hopes when he was hired, but where the hell is the fire??? He's one of the most apathetic coaches I've ever seen. Until the people pulling the strings have the balls to let a hard-nosed coach come into the organization and really put his stamp on the team, I don't think there is any hope of breaking out of the perpetual cycle of mediocrity that it's been stuck in my entire life. This team needs an identity - period.
One of the things about Jet fans is we have a far lower percentage of raging homers as compared to, say, the fish or the Patsies. I like that about us. Of course there still are exceptions. Never understood the mindset of a message board homer, btw. In some cases I think these people literally think it hurts the team if bad things are said about them on a message board. Or maybe they feel good about themselves if they post how great their team is. Even if it isn't.
A big reason the NFL is a copycat league is that the billionaires club of owners know almost nothing about the sport and so they just copy the latest success story. Thats why there was a run on Pats assistant coaches a few years back. If Singletary turns the Niners around my bet is that the owners will all start looking for their own screaming black man to coach their team. If the Niners finish above .500 get ready for head coach Bryan Cox.
