Lee is a true split end. You put him on the field with Kerley in the slot and it will give defenses fits trying to find guys to cover them. Not everybody can keep up with the kind of change-of-direction those guys bring to the field.
Lee is regarded as a better athlete than his former teammate Robert Woods, who ran a 4.42. I could be wrong but I'd be surprised if Lee didn't run a 4.40 or less. If Evans does run a 4.6, which seems to be the consensus around here (my (unreliable) eye test would agree). Not a knock on Evans, they're just different players. I also wouldn't be too hung up over the "#1 WR" moniker. What people envision as the guy who is big, physical, has great hands/body control, runs great routes, AND can burn you over the top usually don't fall out of the top 5. None of the big 3 WR's can claim all those traits. You can get big, physical receivers in the 2nd round too (see Alshon Jefferey). A lot of teams don't have the prototypical #1 WR, including the Patriots. A lot of people would argue that the need for a big, physical WR has been reduced by the emergence of flex TE's (again, see Patriots). Disregarding what I just said, there is definitely a need for all the traits you'll find in Evans, and he's definitely a great talent. The idea of Lee over Evans is growing on me, but I do think Lee would do tremendous things in this offense. I'd be more than happy with either.
I'm wanting to see Jalen Strong from Arizona State, he isn't as big as Evans but he's still a big guy with speed.
Didn't get to see the BYU game tonight but how did Kyle Van Noy look? I want the jets to go WR, TE but if he were to be on the board in the second round he's a guy that would be awesome to grab in my opinion.
Teams that dont have a true #1 WR either have a great QB to mask the weakness (Brees, Brady, Wilson, Rivers, Luck come to mind) or their passing game isnt very effective. We dont have a great QB, and havent had one in a long long time, so having a true #1 WR is almost essential. Lee reminds me a lot of Holmes on the field. They have similar size, athleticism and playmaking ability. They also are complimentary receivers. I dont think either can truly handle going up against other teams' best CBs and double teams. We've seen it with Holmes. He isnt a #1, and we expected him to be that and no we are screwed. I dont think its the "big 3". Its the big 2, and then a whole bunch of guys who I could make a strong case for being ahead of Lee (Adams, Cooks, Benjamin, Beckham, Matthews, Robinson). If I am drafting in the 11-15 range, I am not drafting a complimentary receiver, I want a true #1.
Watching Davante Parker on Louisville. He looks pretty good. think he'd be a nice pick for the later rounds?
What do you guys think about Louisville S Hakim Smith? I've seen them play several times and he's a very good tackler, and seems to have pretty good speed and coverage ability. He's a redshirt Sr. I haven't looked him up on the various scouting lists to see where he's ranked, but am guessing he's probably a 3rd or 4th round prospect. He previously has played SS for Louisville and is now their FS. Would you guys take him?
Unless something happens dramatically one way or the other between now and the draft, I think he's slated as a 3rd round pick. I'd definitely grab him in the 3rd, and probably the 2nd if he moves up to that level.
bleacher report has smith ranked #7 for safeties. say he's prototypical deep safety. very good in coverage, not very physical though. sounds like a safety we had a few yrs back also from louisville. lol
Thanks. That report would be wrong about his not being very physical. He's not only a solid tackler, but a willing tackler (opposed to that other S from Louisville) and I've seen him make some good hard hits.
they also project him to go in the 5th round. so who knows?? i'll take him though. not thrilled about any of our safeties except allen.
Lol just saw Glen Gronkowski (Gronks baby brother) with a nice catch and run for about 45 yards for K State. Too bad he's only 6-3 and a fullback but he has the NFL genes. He's a freshman so maybe he'll grow. _
The freshman Shane Morris for Michigan looks like a player. Big, incredible arm, the rush doesn't seem to bother him, accurate lasers. First impressions are pretty good. The tight end Funchess looks good too. 6-5 and a hand catcher. _
I will be stunned if Van Noy goes in the second. I think the Jets might take him in the first round. He is a perfect fit for the Jets defense. If the Jets don't take him, someone else will in the first round. When I watched BYU in 2012, I saw Ziggy Ansah as a future impact player in the NFL (and wanted the Jets to take him at 9 if he lasted that long). Thing is, I liked Van Noy more than Ansah. Van Noy's floor is Karlos Dansby. His ceiling is Rickey Jackson.
They are not that similar. Kerley functions best as a slot receiver. Lee will be best as a split end or flanker. Lee has a Marvin Harrison type of smoothness and precision to his game. Evans is a guy like Sterling Sharpe and Alshon Jeffery in that he positions his body to shield defenders. Lee has the higher floor. I see the bust potential of Lee as being almost nonexistent. My only concern would be is if he is some sort of jerkoff off the field. Evans has a higher ceiling because with his size and hands, he could become the next Anquan Boldin or Alshon Jeffery. Based on where the Jets will likely pick and who will likely be there, I would be happy if Van Noy, Lee, Evans, or Clinton-Dix were selected. Time will tell if the combine, Senior Bowl, pro days, scout comments, etc., will change my mind between now and May. Free agency is key too. What if Maclin liked Mornhinweg so much that he decides to sign with the Jets? Then the Jets could go WR in round 2 or 3. Then all of a sudden an impact defender such as Van Noy or Clinton-Dix would make even more sense in round 1.
