I have to agree with many of the previous statements about Salas having limited athleticism but he seems shifty to me. It's not always the straight line game breaking speed that is always imperative to a wide receivers game. He looks very smooth and polished when running routes from what we've seen of limited action. Maybe it's because he's a limited guy in terms of athleticism but he just seems to be a guy who has a knack for getting open and moving the chains. Good route runners thrive in a west coast offense predicated on timing. There's the upside factor though if you factor in that he probably doesn't have a future with this team and isn't a special teams guy like Ford/Saunders though that may keep him off the roster.
I'm not really sure if Salas makes the team, but he really does seem to have the knack for timing, which is the bread and butter of a standard WCO. I know people want nothing but game breaking style physical freak receivers, but a guy that shows up in the hole and has sure hands could be more important than a guy that has good measurables and may someday figure out the offense. I wouldn't write Salas off.
I wouldn't either, and he catches pretty much everything thrown his way. Jerry Rice didn't have elite 40 times either, but the guy ran good routes and caught everything thrown his way. Stephen Hill has the measurables, but so far hasn't done anything on the field with them.
