Yeah , I wasn't trying to be a dick, the point is that TJ has made money in the past when he hasn't performed well, do the other teams get a refund , no.
I totally understand TJs reasons for doing what hes doing, I would do the same in his position too. Some people have suggested bad advise, I don't think so.
This will be his last chance to command big bucks, and the FO didn't buckle, so fair play to them.
TJ will be a model pro again next season and continue to pound the rock.
I really can't understand where the 'hate' is coming from , from some qtrs of Jets fans though. Seems hypocritical that someone in their place of work wants a pay rise, (for whatever reason) and explores every avenue before returning to work. Anyone whos done contract negotiations for others or with unions know this kind of thing happens every single day.

It shouldn't be hard to understand. He got his money in bonuses. Now he wants it again. It doesn't work that way. He will be cut next year and he knew that when he signed it. He sucked his first year and was good his second. He got paid a lot for both.

how does not paying him or extending his contract effect his performance on the field this year. we really dont need or want a situation where the guy just shows up and goes through the motions. especially if the nyjets are going to be a run oriented offense. this guy had a tremondous year in 2008 even with favre tossing the ball so many times. im in favor of keeping tj happy and under contract for a few more years.

I didn't think you were trying to be a dick at all.

I think everyone keeps forgetting how awful our OL was in 2007 when Jones still rushed for over 1100 yards.

I'm not saying we should bankrupt the franchise or max out the salary cap, but he's only going to make $900k this year, and if it doesn't hurt our cap position I think we should throw him a little bit more for this season.

Like gustoon pointed out, TJ was not the leading rusher of the AFC just on his own behalf, T-Rich and the OL had their finger in it also.

TJ agreed to a front loaded contract, he knew that his first two years paid him big while the last two not so much. He didn't give any money back after a putrid 2007 season when he had only 1 rushing TD. Yes, I knpw he ran for over 1100 yards, but when you run for only 1 TD you can't you've had a succesful season.

I'm no cap expert, but I'm pretty sure that guaranteeing more money for TJ will effect our cap in a negative way if we decide to part ways with him after the upcoming season.

Sory mate, a little tense in my part of the world right now. http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/23052009/58/premier-league-poll-newcastle-beat-drop.html A bit touchy and emotional

Richardson was re-signed and the other OL are making good money already with the exception being Mangold and I fully believe he will be receiving an extension soon.

His season was not putrid in 2007. Does anyone remember how awful our OL was in 2007? That's why we spent a ton of money to bring in Faneca and Woody. Also, its not like we had any RBs scoring a ton of TDs that year and Jones was not getting the job done. We only scored 6 rushing TDs all year. Washington had 3 of them 2 against the 1-15 Dolphins and our QBs scored 2. I think people just look at Jones' stats and think his failure to score more TDs was all on him.

I think we are well under the cap now that they have increased the cap number an additional $12 million. Giving him a million or two more will not hurt us.

This team still needs a WR, a TE, a Tackle and Guard and a DE. We do have an issue with the cap. We will need to sign a couple of veterans who are cut and we will be competing for their services from other teams.

Who are we going to sign that's going to put a strain on our cap?

We will start the season at our cap max allowed with or without a restructure of Jones.

We are going to restructure Leon. We may well make a trade for Boldin or Edwards or sign Buress or go after someone else who we will resign with a new contract. We will sign another DE, another TE and another OL men once cuts are made.

We will be at or near our cap max once the season starts without giveing Jones another nickel.

This is all complete speculation. We don't need to get a new TE having re-signed Franks and working in Kareem Brown as a TE. We may not trade for Boldin or Edwards and I dont see us getting Burress. We will probably get another DE but none that will hurt our cap to the point where we can't give Jones some extra money if we wanted to do that.

    He's still unsigned...

I like the Jets stance on this. Jones has already been paid $6.5 million a year for his first 2 seasons here.

In his final year he gets almost 6 million. The Jets are telling him that in order for us to restructure you need to prove to us that last year was no fluke and then we'll get serious about restructuring. Hence the $900K he'll make in '09.

The players rarely honor the length of their contracts these days and the teams (Jets in this case) are left scrambling as they have to call the players bluff and determine if they're worth a restructured deal.

The Jets are using this new contract outlook to their advantage by saying ok if you want to renegotiate and you're worth more, than you need to continue to show us that you're worth it and we'll reward you.

Now the ball is in Jones' court. He knows he's getting older and has more miles on him. The Jets know this too. I'll be interested to see what TJ's next move is.

I want the Jets to field the best team we can this year. Franks is old, he just had surgery and he outright sucked last year. He may not make the team. Working in Kareem Brown is a nice idea but we need another TE, we need another DL player and we are thin on the OL. There is also no question that an upgrade at WR would be a huge move.

Jones is signed other than pouting or sitting out he really doesn't have anything to bitch about. The Jets treated him great. They weren't obligated to give him a new contract and they did. He has been paid for his production in 2009 essentially in advance. He owes the team his complete effort.

I'd like to see the money go to Leon and Mangold. we do not need to give Jones another dime. if he holds out, we can fine him once the mandatory stuff starts. He has zero bargining power, his replacement has been drafted, and we save a ton of cash by cutting him before next year. He is bound to get nothign and thats the way the bussiness of football works.

If we cut Franks and bring in a new TE then their salary cap hit is a wash. I understand we need another DL and we could use at least one more veteran OL. But neither is going to put us in cap hell.

I know we don't have to give him extra money. I'm just saying if we are in a good salary cap position and have re-signed Mangold and Washington then we should give him a little extra.

I have no problem with Jones seeking more money
NFL Careers are short and these guys will most likely spend some time in hospitals
NFL is a Billion Dollar Business, but we always claim the players are greedy
Get your money while you can
When owners can ask players to take a pay cut so they can sign someone else, that's crazy, but we have been brainwashed to accept it.

There is not one person in here who wouldn't be pissed if their boss came to them and told them they have to take a pay cut, even if their work wasn't as good as it was in previous years

I like Jones, he was my favourite non-Jet in the leauge until he was a Jet (first time thats ever happened). I just don't see it being an option to restructure, he is old and we have Greene and Washington
