What other position can they take, they got their wish, and the savior has not lived up to his preseason hype. Hell, he has not shown much progress against the worst defense in the league. Growing pains aside, KC has to become more consistent and stop turning the ball over. The FO, CS, fans in NY have zero patience, if he does not improve in the next couple of weeks, the Jets may be forced to look elsewhere for a QB. I know its premature, but in NY and the NFL, its produce or move on.
Right, all the Chad haters got their wish and now they are like cockroaches after you turn on the light, they just scatter. The cannon armed Clemens sure hasn't done as much as old noodle arm. Hey, Jeff George had a cannon too as did Ryan Leaf, how did their careers turn out?
Clemens is terrible and it has nothing to do with pass protection. What is his TD to INT ratio? It's obvious why he waited so long to play. He is just flat out dumb when it comes to making decisions.
Not hard to see why Mangini took so long to put him in there. But for all the Chad haters it was because Mangini was stupid and a terrible coach, turns out it was because he stinks.
Clemens was not ready -- that's blatantly obvious, if you disagree, you are simply fooling yourself. Hopefully with these games under his belt, and an entire off-season as the starter, he can make dramatic steps in preseason and carry it over into the regular season -- otherwise the NYJ are phucked for a long time. The last winning QB they had will be leading the Ravens into the playoffs
If you can't learn how to read defenses in a year and a half you will never be able to read them your entire career.
I never hear people talk about the fact that pretty much every game there are 2 or 3 plays that the WR's completely fuck up that turn big plays into incompletions. Yesterday we had the long pass to Smith that hit him in the hands that he dropped and another long pass to Coles that he slowed up for for some reason and it ended up sailing past him. Not to mention that most of the sacks he "takes" are because absolutely no one is open downfield. The throw at the goal line was certainly a bad decision but again most of the "lack of accuracy" passes I've seen from Clemens come on those stupid lobs, a throw he obviously can't make yet the fucking OC keeps calling it.
The pass to Coles he would have had to have a step ladder because it was well over his head. Alot of QBS take sacks due to coverage but that is where you have to use your head and your feet and buy time til someone comes open or you had a chance to throw it away. KC doesn't have that escapability.
Clemens critics right now are the same, typical, short-sighted, impatient Jets fans who are always in the "I want immediate results right now or the guy is shit" category. Clemens is 24 and won't turn 25 until next June. Right from the first game, he's been in a come-from-behind situation, which is pretty much a microcosm of the entire season. There are a lot of reasons for this slide, which started way before Clemens took the first snap. We still don't have a running attack, period. Thomas Jones is capable but there's absolutely no excuse for not RUNNING the ball in yesterday from the 1' line. That's Clemens' fault? And I don't want to hear about McFadden. McFadden wouldn't have gotten the ball in either, the fault for which falls directly on the O-line. Our WR corps is in terrible shape, which consisted yesterday of a limping Coles and Cotchery with a finger cast. McCareins was rightfully handcuffed to the steam pipes in the basement of Giants Stadium where he belongs, and you can't call Wright or Smith legitimate WR threats yet. Chansi Stuckey has yet to prove he can stay healthy. For all practical purposes, Clemens was working with 2 nicked-up WRs yesterday. We need to address a good WR (or even two) in the next draft or F/A. So let's get this straight. Yesterday, "your dad" basically expected a win from a 24-year old kid who has to work with a (still) shitty running game, a banged up, depleted WR corps, an O-line that can't control the LOS and playcalling that says that if Thomas Jones can't run it up the middle and get yardage, the smaller Leon Washington can. And this is all Clemens' fault. Yeah, I understand now....
I think a young QB makes the most dramatic changes in his 1st offseason after starting some games..... Right now Clemens is in the Storm, Every week he's being Blitzed by something new - Wether it's getting 2 days to prep for SB contender Dallas on the road or playing is certain wether - The whole thing is new to him..... People get all excited - But, REALLY this is ALL practice right now.... Win or Lose it doesn't matter... What matters is learning from each week, practicing well after looking at tapes and getting all these experiences into the Bag of Tricks so you can battle them next year WITH BETTER TALENT...... The whole team Mangini and Clemens included, need to learn - Find the deficiences and come out NEXT YEAR armed and ready.... Come out next year after studying and practicing all offseason, the Game Slows down, the OL is BIgger and Better, there's maybe another weapon on offesne and the WR's are healthy....... then NEXT YEAR, if it doesn't click we can talk about the next move.... But, Clemens gets a full offseason and season...... They can draft another guy low and bring in a FA but, this is Clemens Time.... Save the whining cuz there's a long road to go right here and Clemens has a TON to learn and experience... THIS is what makes it so great when/if he develops NEXT YEAR... ENJOY IT... ENJOY watching each new experience for the Kid - ENJOY watching him go up to New England... MAYBE he gets his butt handed to him, but in the long run, IF this is the QB of the future for the NY Jets and he conquers the NE PATS one day, this week and this year will be looked upon as the times where Clemens took his beatings and learned.... Some of us that day willlook back and say, "Hey, I enjoyed watching Clemens develop, I'm glad I stood by this kid!!!!!!".... And some of use will say "What a moron I was thinking a QB MUST show gretaness or be benched after 5 games, man why did I Whine like Tool all through Clemens early starting days??????? Maybe next time a young player comes around I won't act like a kid who never saw a QB develop before and I won't post irrational trash"
I have been watching football for 43 years, and I tell you now - Clemens is not a big time NFL QB and never will be. He doesn't have it. And I am taking into account the myriad problems that this team has, as other posters have pointed out. After watching hundreds, maybe thousands, of games, you can tell if a player, especially a QB, has got "it". This guy doesn't. We've got to start looking for a QB. As pointed out by another poster, his mechanics stink, he holds the ball too long, and he just doesn't see the field. I'll eat crow if he becomes a star, but I am confident I won't have to. He is not gonna do squat in this league.
There are several QB's in the hall of fame and many good starting NFL QB's over the years who have struggled as much or more than Clemens is struggling now, and for the same reason: their teams sucked.
You're joining the host of Pittsburgh Steelers fans circa 1969 who thought Terry Bradshaw was truly terrible. In fact he had two really terrible seasons in a row where he could not hold the starting QB job, all on the way to the hall of fame. Steve Young? Tampa Bay fans thought he was completely over-rated and useless. They applauded when the Bucs drafted Vinny and shipped Young's rights. Troy Aikman? Cowboys fans were a bit more sophisticated than the average fan and they were rewarded for their patience. Bart Starr? Don't ask. Dan Fouts? Ditto. Anybody who is writing off Clemens based on what we've seen so far is being very premature in their judgements. Yes, he hasn't shown a lot, but then again the Jets and particularly the Jets offensive line just blow chunks at this point.
If you don't get immediate results from somebody who has been on the team for a year and a half then he probably is in the shit category. About the only great NFL QB that I can think of who took a few years to become great was Bradshaw and Clemens is no Bradshaw. There may be others but they all started as rookies not as second year guys. Shit is probably too strong a word. He may be a decent QB in time but he will probably never be great or "the future" of this franchise as so many people here like to refer to him as.
Bart Starr (3 TD's and 12 Int his third year with the Pack), Bradshaw, Steve Young, Dan Fouts, Ken Anderson, John Brodie, Chris Chandler, Steve DeBerg, and many, many others... What you need to show in your first season is that you are not completely over-matched, that you don't have deer in the headlights syndrome and that your arm is adequate. You need to show some leadership skills. You need to show coachability. You need to show toughness. Right now Clemens is an open book. Anybody who is sure that he is a bad QB is being very premature in their judgements at this point.
I saw all those guys play when they were starting out, except for Starr. I remember the Bradshaw/Hanratty/Harris controversy, and I thought, at the time, that Bradshaw was better then the others. Young, Aikman, and Fouts, and throw in Manning, although they played for lousy teams at the begining, you could see the flashes of the players they would become, in spite of the teams poor play. I have seen none of that from Clemens. He has seemed to regress from the game against the Ravens. He is reminding more and more of Browning Nagle. He will never be more then a back up in this league.
His performances have actually gotten better as the season progressed. He now looks like the 4th quarter QB from the Ravens game almost all the time. The problem is that he's playing against better opponents also. People point at the Int's as the big negative stat at this point, and he's thrown a few doozies (not as many as Chad yet though), however he's also thrown 4 picks in hopeless situations or off of end of game deflections. Turn around the McCareins mistakes and give the Jets a lead at the end on one of the drives and he'd have 6 TD's and 6 Int's right now and nobody would be complaining about that.
I have always been a huge Chad Pennington supporter because he has always had alot of heart and was usually one of the best QB's in terms of accuracy and making the right throw. With all that said, this is still Kellen's first season as a starter playing behind two 2nd year players in Brick and Mangold... It's funny how us Jet fans expect this kid to be playing like a Brady, Manning or even Farve... Simply amazing. Give this kid a chance. He has the Arm to make just about any throw on the field and he also has the ability to scramble out of the pocket and make something out of nothing with his legs. With all this playing time he is getting this season, it will only help him as a starter for this Jets team next year. All of that is coming from a fan of Chad Pennington... I was one who was saying Kellen will never be anything in the NFL (Because I never seen him play) And now that I have... All I can say is this... It's his first year starting and mistakes are gonna happen... But I like what I see in this kid.
