As far as New York sports teams are concerned and without referencing the 2007 Giants, the light finally came on in my head today. The 1986 Mets aren't a good comparison. They may have been bad boys, but they were underachievers that were way too good to lose in 1986 (and yet, they almost did). As said already, that team was the favorite throughout the regular season and the playoffs. They weren't playing with house money like the Jets are now. This Jets team is more like the 1999 Knicks in sneaking into the playoffs and then making a highlight reel of memorable plays in the playoffs, all while capturing the attention of New York and even fans of other teams. Both teams played the role of heavy underdogs that succeeded with gritty play and solid defense. Beyond that though, there is no comparison between the condition of the franchises. This Jets team is on the rise in the Rex Ryan era, and that Knicks team was entrenched in front office turmoil and getting close to the end of the Patrick Ewing era.
This Jets team is like the 2001 Pats. A young QB with ability and (and the ability to attract fine women) Clutch kicker A coach who knows how to get a team to win And most importantly ABOUT TO DOMINATE THE AFC EAST AND NFL IN GENERAL FOR THE NEXT DECADE
Why the comparisons? We are the 2009 New York Jets. Rex pushed to break the mold which makes the Jets original and genuine making this run so much fun. Let's leave the comparisons to the talking heads on ESPN since they don't have any ideas of their own.
That may be true for Jets fans from Queens and Long Island, but there are a great deal of Jets fans from Jersey, BK, BX, and Manhattan who are also Yankees fans. I'd say it's probably 55% Mets, 35% Yankees, 10% other
Truthfully, I don't really care. The only team I care for this 2009 Jets team to resemble is the team that won Super Bowl XLIV.
