Here's the worst part of the press conference, for me anyway: when he got around to evaluating the Chargers, he was talking about one of their receivers, and said "6'5", fast, strong, I DON'T KNOW WHERE THEY GET THESE GUYS". You don't know where they get these guys? YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHERE TO FIND THESE GUYS AND GET THEM FOR US! Some one should fill him in on the fact that part of a head coach's responsibility is evaluating and getting effective players for his team, on both sides of the ball. Just more proof, for me, that Rex has no idea how to be an NFL head coach.
Actually i would put that responsibility primarily on the VP (or whatever name is cooked up for whoever is in charge) of scouting - both college and current NFL players - with an equal dash of director of football operations/gm/asst gm. of course the communication lines are open and one would think everyone is on the same page but the jets track record over the years makes u wonder. usually - the head coach inputs the system and the type of players required for that system to succeed - and communicates that to the personnel crowd. unless that coach is given special latitude (like bellichek) to be involved in finding these guys.
JetBlue has made some excellent posts in this thread, and i basically agree with his take. I would only add that I do think TT was brought here as a marketing ploy, and Rex never intended him to play as a real backup Qb, instead running the rare option/wildcat play. As for McElroy not suiting up for the most part, I think the reason is twofold. One is that for all his faults, Muck has been quite durable, and other than I think that one time they brought in Brunell, has not been knocked out of the game. You can see Rex saying it was a low risk approach to assume Muck was not going to get knocked out. Add in that Muck's contract was a huge investment, and they stuck with him longer than otherwise. But other than those factors, and where they are now, JetBlue's points explain everything. It's actually quite simple. GM is a better fit for the Jet O than TT, so that's why he gets the start.
Maybe, but watching Ryan stand there while the team has disintergrated around him, you have to wonder when you hear things like that. Is he involved in ANYTHING about this team other than trying to run the defense?
I applaud Rex for staying with Sanchez. The Jets tried to grab a franchise QB to stabilize this team for years. Sanchez doesn't look like that guy but that's not a good enough reason to try and squeeze into the playoffs with a crappy team at the expense of the teams future. We drafted the wrong guy and didn't do a very good job developing him. The HC has a rebuilding mediocre team that might have been able to get a playoff loss based on an incredible easy schedule and a crappy confrence with a no risk QB with limited skills. I can't blame Rex for trying to do the right thing. I blame Tanny and him for drafting the wrong guy and giving him two crappy OC's with no plan but not for staying with him to long for a backup quality QB who might have won us an extra game.
I don't think he team has disintegrated around him. I think it's more of an front office battle going on right now. Players have been saying all the right things in press conferences. I guess you're speculating this because of the play?
I like Rex,,,,but you cannot have a head coach that is NOT involved in every aspect of the team ! A head coach must be involved in the offense as well as defense and ST. Clock management and 2 minute drills are also part of the equation ! I do not want to see just Sporano take the hit, yes he has sucked as well but the 3 stooges, Tanny ,Rex and Sanchez have to take direct hits as well. I say blow it up from top to bottom and start over,,,,,,,,ps I really would also have liked to have seen some quotes this week from players on both sides of the ball saying how pissed they are to be eliminated and that the seasons last 2 games are not to get in,,,,,,,but I saw very little if any of that ! Also from what I have read the locker room was and has not been sullen but business as usual. I men after that horrendous loss on national tv with their playoff lives on the line and the effort that was given,,,,,,,,,it seems to me that either guys don't care or are complacent ,,,,,,,,blow it up
I love how Herm was killed for poor clock mgt repeatedly, despite being a defensive guy, but Rex is supposed to get a pass? Rex is not up for being a HC. He needs to be the loudmouth DC on a 6-10 squad. Even as a DC he took over a Ray Lewis led defense that was already beasting under Marvin Lewis. So I question just how much of a "brilliant defensive mind" he really is. Bringing the house on 3rd down was his main "strategy" in 09-10. Not all that creative as say a Dick LeBeau. It's simply time for this regime to go. Rex is in over his head. The Tebow on 3rd series was idiotic. It was Rex who wanted Sparano which was an absolute joke. And the main purpose behind the hiring was his wildcat background, which we never used. And to say Tebow looked horrid in practice is no excuse. There was over 15 games of film from Tebow's first 2 years to evaluate him. You don't watch a player practice to evaluate. You watch him in a game. Tebow had more than enough of a body of work to rate him. And Rex saw fit to give a 4th and 6th for him! Let's not forget that! And now to say he sux in practice is ridiculous. It's YOU who sux, Rex, not the guy you traded 2 picks for. Woody, please end this buffoonery. I'm begging you.
I have my issues with Rex. But I tend to give him a bit of a break on the Sparano hiring. Yeah, I had no confidence Sparano would improve the O. And in fact he has worsened it. But... the fanbase here and elsewhere was up in arms that Schotty had to go. All well and good. But who was supposed to replace him? Sparano was available. He was never an OC before, but he was involved in the O to be sure. A focus on a wildcat or option approach was in his resume. The fact that the whole notion of using Tebow in that role was a travesty is not something you lay at Sparano's feet. The responsibility for that goes to a higher pay grade. More to the point, who should the Jets have hired instead? Perhaps Haley would have taken the job if he did not have to share roles with Sparano. But it did not surprise me that Haley preferred to go to Pitt. Who else was available who would have looked better at the time? And it should be clear now that most of the problems on O had to do with Sanchez and several other weak points on the roster. The Schotty Haters refused to see this last year, but everyone (other than the outliers who can be safely ignored) sees that now. In short the circumstances were stacked against Ryan this past off season, and it's hard to blame him too much for hiring Sparano. We have to be fair here.
At this point I'm far less concerned with what Rex Ryan says, and more concerned with what Rex Ryan does.
Big Blocker -----I believe Haley is a kook but he is good at what he does,,I thought he was the guy at the time,,the thing that was strange was that the talk was of a package deal. It was Sporano calling running plays and Haley callling passing plays--which would have been more of a circus / joke . ps did'nt we hire Sporano before Pitt hired Haley ?
