It's not 50/50. He has almost no chance of making that field goal. There is over a 70% chance that you're giving Brady the ball midfield in OT. http://www.advancednflstats.com/2012/01/temperature-and-field-goals.html
Read the text in the article instead of looking at the misleading chart. So Folk had probably a 25% chance to make the 56 yarder on a normal basis, however you have to throw in the fact that Folk is as hot as they come these days. It was a good call. It worked out. Why do people keep bitching about Rex's calls in games the Jets win? If you ask me that's just bitching to bitch.
I like what we did. You go for the win. Giving Brady too many chances always burns you. Liked the calls too. In that situation with THAT guy on the other side, you go as conservative as you can.
It seems likely to me that the Jets knew that the Patriots committed that foul regularly and alerted the officials to it just before the field goal attempt. The real purpose of the field goal attempt was to draw that foul and the Jets were pretty confident that they would draw it. Otherwise trying a 56 yard field goal there is very risky. The jets knew they had it once they got inside the Patriots 40 and that's why they kept running the ball instead of doing a play action pass.
exactly, he has made a 56 yarder in the past, hit from 57 in warmups, and the weather conditions were good. id prefer to: -try the FG for the win, and still have a punchers chance to stop them on a short field vs. -pin them, have a better chance to stop them, but forfeit a chance to win it right there.
Were there no field goals attempted when the temperature was between 31 and 50 and 61-80? This is just BS. The kick was long enough and just slightly left. Much better to attempt it there than concede the ball to Brady with a punt. And I agree 100% with whoever said the Jets may very well have tipped the refs that New England is a frequent violator here - look at the focus of the back judge.
