It's become apparent that the Red Sox, knowing that a playoff appearance is all but wrapped up, don't care about the division anymore. Resting Okajima, Crisp, Youkilis, Matsuzaka, Lugo, and Pedroia, not rushing Manny back, allowing Gagne to try to work himself into form, going to a 6 man/weird rotation to set up the playoff rotation... they're trying to look at the big picture. While I can't exactly disagree with that, I would like to see them put a LITTLE more effort in. For example, Bobby Kielty, Brandon Moss, Alex Cora, and Eric Hinske are getting WAY too much playing time lately, and guys like Brian Corey have no business on the mound at this point. While I'd like to see them win the division, I'd rather see a deep playoff run. But I also wish they didn't go into "rest mode" so blatantly.
Spin away. You are telling me Boston does not care that they have lost the AL East to the Yankees for the past 9 years?
Probably not, since they have won the real title more recently. EDIT: I guarantee you that the front office doesn't care. They have decided that going deep in the playoffs is more important, and so are resting guys and preparing for that. The fans on the other hand probably DO care, but if they win it all, I doubt anyone will be harping on it.
While I don't disagree with you, the Clemens reply is too easy (and I already know that Clemens hasn't been that good
Wilson Betemit is good player, he just hasn't developed yet. They didn't need to buy anyone new...they should've been dominant, but they don't play team ball. They already purchased A-Rod, Damon, Giambi, Petitte (again), Clemens (again), and Abreu. Their entire field could make the All-Star roster just by name recognition. How did overpaying that 40+ year old pitcher turn out? It didn't matter because the starting lineup can produce 5-10 runs a night...easy. Money doesn't buy happiness, but it sure can buy some pretty good ball players...that don't make it to the World Series.
That's a pretty interesting take. Well, except that we traded for Betemit, we didn't "buy" him. That's what contending teams do at the deadline, make moves to help run for the title. As for that 40+ pitcher, he's 6-6 with a 4.18 ERA in 17 starts. In 99IP, he's given up 99 hits, for an average of one hit per inning. He's surrendered 46ER, and has 31BB to 68Ks. Had he received run support in his early games, he'd easily have another 4-5 wins. 10-12 wins for half a season of work? Yeah, I'll take that.
Sure, why not? If he had gotten the run support, we're talking about 10-13 wins. In half a season. That's a 20-game season if it's from the start. How much can you possibly ask for? Shit, we're paying Giambi to shit the bed every at-bat. Matsui's not lived up to his contract. Sheffield was a disappointment last year. Let's be honest. You guys got lucky with Pedro. His career could have been over right now, but he made a comeback. It's all a gamble. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. The fact is, when we got Roger to come back, we 1) prevented Boston from acquiring him, and 2) got someone who helped the rotation recover from guys like Igawa and Pavano. The youth wasn't ready yet. If you've got the money, you spend it. That's my biggest problem with the small market teams and revenue sharing. They pocket so much of it, and their teams suck for it. The big market teams are all starting to follow the Yankees' model, and it's the right way to run a team.
clemens isn't worth the money. He's thrown less than 100 innings. Think of how much he's being paid. I just went through his starts. Best you could give him is 10 wins and 7 losses, going start by start. Hardly 13 wins.
You specifically referred to THIS YEAR. BTW, How can you purchase Petitte again, if you drafted him in the first place? And for the record, Let's break this down: Yankees: C: Posada-Drafted by the Yankees..Played entire career in NY 1B: Giambi- signed with Yankees as a FA 2B: Cano-Undrafted..signed in 2001..spent 4 years in the minors SS: Jeter-Drafted by NY...played entire career in NY 3B: A-Rod- Bought thru trade by Yankees LF: Matsui- Undrafted..purchased thru Japan CF: Cabrerra-Undrafted..signed in 2001.spent 4 Years in minors RF: Abreu-aquired via trade DH: Damon - Bought SP: Petitte: drafted By NY, left as FA, returned as FA..Still a product of the Yankees farm system SP: Wang- undrafted...progressed thru YAnkees farm system. I'm too lazy to look it up, but are you also counting unearned runs? He's given up quite a few (6). How much of an outcome did those have on games? I know I remember the one day where he got lit up in the second inning, it was due to an extended inning off an error by Cano. Anyway, like I said, 10-13 wins. And over the course of an entire season, that's at least an 18 game winner. Is he overpaid? Yes. Is he worth it? Yes. Considering that when he was signed, the Yankees still had Igawa in the rotation, Pavano gone for the year, and were looking to guys like Chase Wright to save the ship, I'd have to say signing Clemens wasn't just worth it, it was critical. And that's ignoring the fact that had we not signed him, he'd be pitching in Fenway this year.
Im goin to Boston this weekend and I will produly wear my Yankee hat. I hope to find a bar where I can watch the Yankees game but no big deal, I'll watch it in the most wicked Red sox bar around for all I care.
Do me a favor, tell them to take the MacDahnald's Angus Buhrgah, and shove it up their asses! Man, I hate that commercial. WAD.
