I don't either. Betemit won't play except when Torre feels obligated to make him feel part of the team (which will probably cost us a game). Chamberlain will be the setup guy for a number of reasons and now who replaces Proctor? Nobody I know of.
Yeah, Horne was added to the "no way in the world" list a couple of days ago. He must be another really good up and comer. If Gagne goes to the Brewers or Mets I'll be happy.
No, it was because he was designated for assignment when they called up Lester. He wasn't even on the roster.
Betemit has been good as a pinch hitter this year, actually real good. And he switch hits, so you can use him in any situation. The downside is he was starting at 3B to start the year and did so badly he ended up on the bench, where he later found usefulness as a PH. Of course in the AL you guys probably won't be using a PH much, especially with the lineup the Yankees have. We got him at the deadline last year and he was a big boost in the lineup, but a lot of our young guys are ready for the majors now and we didn't need him.
From all reports Horne has a good arm. Nice way to stand pat with the prospects but lets just hope Betemit says nothing about A-Rod next year
The Dodgers have Nomah and his .360 slugging percentage holding down 3b for the forseeable future. I can't imagine what need they would have for a guy like Betemit. Everytime I get frustrated by something the Mets do I just have to remind myself at least I'm not a Dodger fan.
Ok, I read that this morning. Must have been wrong. It was the 40 man, not the 25 they were referring to in the article when then mentioned he may be traded.
For those of you worried about what the Yanks are losing by giving up Proctor, I found this interesting bit on another site: Source Now I don't know how much of this is due to his usage patterns, but given that those usage patterns weren't likely to change, I'm not sweating losing Proctor, as long as the Yanks have someone semi-adequate to replace him. Especially if you factor in the chance that Proctor will follow in The Way of the Quantrill after being abused for two seasons.
Betemit played himself out of the lineup. It wasn't about Nomar, he was already in the lineup at 1B, it was about James Loney. He was ready for the bigs and a much better hitter than Betemit, so Nomar moved to 3B to make a spot for Loney. Look up his numbers, I'm sure they are good. We also have Adam Laroche, who is supposed to be our 3B some time soon and Tony Abreu who can play there. Abreu is slated to be the 2B when Jeff Kent is finished, whenever that is. Could be a while.
Now Proctor had his faults, for sure. However, who else are we going to throw out there in the 6th when a starter can't go 7? Bruney? Myers? Farnsworthless? (Who shouldn't even be here at this point, and yet, instead of getting rid of him, they pull this deal.) Oh wait, we'll call up Joba to be the setup man. Myers will continue to be the lefty specialist that all lefties hit off of. Bruney will continue to come in and collapse. And Vizcaino can come in for two innings a night, and be the next in the Quantrill line. Thank God football is starting again.
And that is exactly the problem. Viz can pitch in the 6th and 7th but he sure as hell can't do it nightly and there is no one else to replace Proctor. They absolutely must not overuse Chamberlain or they will ruin him...let's see how Joe does with that one. Let's face it, Proctor was a perfect example of The Yankee's Use them and Lose them philosophy.
Loney should've forced Nomar out of the lineup then. He's awful. Betemit's success in the pinch hitting role should've earned him more chances at 3rd, not a trade for a reliever who's squarely in the middle of the road.
You can make that case too, but Nomar's been proven and was great both in the late innings and in the stretch last year. In the playoff debacle vs New York he was about the only guy who could hit, until we brought Loney in for Game 3. I'm surprised Betemit's stock fell as fast as it did, but again we have a few young infielders ready to step up and we needed a guy in the bullpen. Especially with our starters banged up. We have Broxton and Saito for the 8th and 9th innings respectively, so he will be middle relief, barring injury.
Well, here's the story: So Joe abused the hell out of Scotty, and then dumped him. Nice job Joe. And we're viewing this guy as a possible replacement for ARod? Fantastic. Nothing like a little insider information to make me puke up my lunch.
