And there has been exactly one Japanese starting pitcher even close in talent, Hideo Nomo, and it was like 1992 or something. I don't see your point. A pitcher, ANY pitcher the caliber of Matsuzaka is an absolute STEAL at >$10 million a year in a market where guys like Zito and Meche are getting boatloads of money.
Sox had all the leverage in the Matsuzaka negotiations, thanks to the posting process. Boras couldn't create his phantom "other bidders" to drive up the price.
jack wilson playing tonight for pittsburgh and driving in runs 2 for 2 with RBI in both at bats happy to be staying? I think the trade with detroit fell through
Amazingly the Yankees actually had an offer for Farnsworth: The Braves were reportedly willing to trade Bob Wickman for Kyle Farnsworth, but only if the Yankees picked up the rest of Farnsworth's salary. That apparently means they would have had to pay the $7.1 million Farnsworth is owed through next year, plus the $2 million Wickman is due over the rest of the season. Perhaps they would have considered it an upgrade, but not at that price.
lol, why not if you're the braves? you get rid of wickman's contract and get farnsworth for free. I'm sure a few teams would've traded for farnsworth had the yankees been willing to pay the contract
He was actually a starter here. I don't think he was too bad, but I can't recall specifics. (One year he was 14-4, but his ERA was consistently in the 4+ range.) He's bounced back and forth between Cleveland and Milwaukee ever since leaving here. I don't think he would have been much, if any, of an upgrade. I saw Torre's postgame last night, and he claimed he and Farnsworth had a meeting the other day, and Farnsworth told him that he wants the chance to work regularly. Joe gave him the shot last night. Let's see if that's the spark he needed.
