Probably not, but by then Tanny had broke me down to the point where i worried more when he didn’t throw away low round picks
Of course not. We should have done what NE did. Trade down. Are you actually arguing that nobody would trade up for Gholston or anyone else but we should take him? Are you actually forgetting that NO traded up with NE to take Sedric Ellis right behind us? If you really think passing on a QB of need who was moving up on every ones draft board to draft an outright bust from day 1, you might want to rethink that.
We were all in that year. We had Jenkins at the nose Harris at lb . We weren’t trading down for Flacco . Mangini needed and edge rusher , gholston was cemented on as a top 6 pick. It was the absolute perfect storm. It happens, of all the bad picks the jets have made that may the one I am least angry about. Disappointing for sure but definitely not a woulda coulda shoulda pick, In my opinion
Trading down usually is a smart idea, but that's not what the Jets did. I am sure the Jets fielded calls, but it sounded like they were buying Gholston stock. Like I said, Flacco was a flash in the pan prior to the draft. No one was taking him top 5, no one thought he was worthy of such a high selection. It's not about passing on a QB, but rather how the scenario played out at that moment. Sedric Ellis doesn't really have a say in this conversation.
As I said, the article I read may be wrong, but I remember reading something that said that Sanchez had two years remaining on his contract when he was extended. I believe it is correct, however. I just looked up some info regarding Sanchez, and it is below. On Sanchez's rookie contract: https://www.nydailynews.com/sports/...8m-deal-richest-team-history-article-1.374156 Sanchez signed a five-year deal in 2009 when he was drafted. This is what it says on Wikipedia regarding the 2011 season and when the contract extension was signed: Sanchez had played 3 of those 5 years by March 9, 2012 (2009, 2010 & 2011) when the contract extension was signed. Thus, he had two years remaining on his contract when he signed the extension, and the Jets would have had no fears about losing him in FA for another 2 years. I think they signed him to an extension as a sort of apology after they tried to sign Peyton Manning and then brought in Tim Tebow.
that's all opinion or made up bullshit. 'No way' Flacco was 'worthy' of a top 5 pick? But Gholston was? Sanchez was the following year? was Flacco "worthy" of being selected 18th overall? if so, "no way" he should've been selected 5th. but 13 measly picks later its okay to take him...? the way people view the draft is so strange
Don't let your current feelings for those players dictate how you felt about them 10 11 years ago. Personally, I wasn't a huge fan of Gholston, but he was highly regarded and so was Sanchez after that Rose Bowl game in 2009 when he lit it up and his stock was at the highest point. Flacco was a player whose stock increased during the draft process. Most did not have a top 5 grade on him, he was a late first round pick in terms of his stock. And that's when his stock was at it's highest.
The only all in drafts are drafts when you make a move on a QB out of need. All in would have been to make a move to get Matt Ryan. Since we didn't do that the draft was just a filler draft which didn't work out to well. The all in move for 2008 wasn't made until August, months after the draft when we traded for Favre and cut Chad. Drafts where you stay put, need a QB and take what comes to you isn't all in. The following year is when we went all in on the draft when we were forced to move up for Sanchez.
No, we were all in on winning that year. You don’t take a qb when you are in that mode. See Giants 2018. Mangini needed that edge to complete his d. They doubled down going for Favre thinking they had the D rounded out.
I stand corrected about the length of his original contract, but it still sounds to me like they were worried they could lose him if they didn't extend him at that point.
How could we have been all in that year at the draft? We didn't have a QB who could carry us when we drafted. Chad was clearly damaged goods.
Comeback player of the year . Favre was a clear upgrade and Tanny and mangini needed to win that year so they took him when he became available. But make no mistake, that regime was not ever going to take a player they didn’t think could help game 1. In hindsight, we should have rolled with penny, it was an even year and he always had great years on the even years. 02,04,06 . Like @jaywayne12 says in the weather thread, the trend is your friend.
Worst thing that happenned to the JETS was Favre trying to fuel his personal vendetta...... imagine if he stayed with Rex's team, while Sanchez got to watch from the pine? I dont hate Favre for 2008 (that shit show lies on "mangenius") but I do fault him for another fake "retirement"...... either way, all just bittersweet memories and revisionist history at this point... that ended in typical tragic fashion...... I can bump the the love "my quarterback" threads from 09/10 but thats cyberwork for someone else
Do we trade up and take Sanchez if Favre stays with Rex? I doubt it. So based on the result s of the first round, Cleveland takes Alex Mack but obviously we wouldn’t have since we had mangold. We end up with either vontae Davis, peria jerry or clay Mathews. Ah what could have been.
