It should only scare you if you really believe the Jets are a playoff team this year. If you don't then you should just be happy he is getting experience now rather then rotting on the bench.
I do believe the Jets are a playoff team. 9-7 from last year and they improved their defense, they improved their running game, and they hired a coach that the team can rally around and get excited to play for.
I truly believe that the position of QB is given way to much credit for the success or failure of a team. Shitty teams have shitty QBs. Great teams have great QBs. It seems so obvious. Thats why everyone believes it. Teams that play their rookie QB. These are usually shitty teams that have been shitty for a while. They replace their existing QB with the rookie expecting a miracle. But the fact is the reason their exisitng QB was "shitty" was beacuse the rest or their team was shitty. Guess what, the new team is still shitty and the rookie QB fails. Teams where the backup QB jumps in in the season and the team does shitty it often cited as proof of QB value. However QBs that get hurt are usually hurt because they have a shitty O-line, the backup still has to play with a shitty O-line. The Falcons were an exception because they were a good team and lost thier QB. The Ravens were a very good team. QB didn't matter. No one is saying Flacco got them where they were. Its all about the defense. There is no QB in the league that would have made them worse except for maybe Farvre. I think the Jets fit this mold. We are a good team, that had our moronic owner pull a stunt with Farve at QB. We will be good this year with any one of our existing 3 QBs. my basis for judging a quaterback: 1. Experience - I would argue that experience does not translate into a garaunteed success. It simply gives you a better picture of how good or bad a QB really is. It reduces the variability of QB quality. Yes there are aome QBs that are better than others. Experience gives you a better chance of guessing right. 2. Physical Attributes - People always talk about Chad's noodle arm. Yes he has a noodel arm. He can still be a good QB, but if he had a laser rocket arm he would be one of the all time greats. 3. Age - Farvre is TOO OLD. Sure he still throws better than most QBs, but he got dinged up too easily last year and doens't have the fuel in the tank. 4. Reputation - Having a "top" QB gets you the respect of your opponents and your own players. Player want to play for the PAtriots because they think Brady is a god. Defenses play differently agains Peyton because they fear he will carve them up.
But the schedule appears to be at least twice as hard as last years. The coach is a rookie and so too is the QB. I don't think many are counting on the playoffs this year but it would be nice.
This is in my opinion another myth. No way is it twice as hard. We still have to play NE, Buf and Mia 2 times each. The bottom line is: "the volatility of the league makes it seemingly impossible to determine which teams will be strong based on their record from the previous season" (from nfl.com) Also, if making the playoffs is your goal, the we have an EASIER schedule than last year. Yes thats right because we have the lowest strength of schedule in out division. Miami, Buf and NE are worse off than us. Last year the Patriots had the easiest scheudle in football based on SofS.
Last year we played the AFC West and the NFC West. Between all of those teams only one had a better than .500 record. This year we play the AFC South and the NFC South. Only one of those teams was under .500. It would be a mistake to not understand how hard it is going to be.
The Jet play more 10 win teams from last year (8, tied with buffalo) then anyone else in the NFL. Thats half a schedule of playoff caliber teams. The schedule is very hard this upcomming season.
