They gave him an extension after 14 starts with an average of 215 passing yards a game. Hard to imagine they will expect much more out of him for them to pay the option after this season. So only good thing for the Bills is if he shits the bed this year they can walk away, but since they thought 215 ypg was acceptable to hand over a 6 year extension with an average of $18.6M a year, it's doubtful they will walk away from his back up QB quality.
But what you're leaving out is Taylor is playing in a run first offense too. And since we led the league in rushing, of course his ypg isn't gonna be that high. But as a passer, he was quite accurate and protected the ball very well given his status as a first year starter
You chose some very odd stats and numbers. I presume you did that because all the normal statistics are good and did not fit your negative mantra. In only his first year starting in this league, he finished the year completing 63.7 percent of his passes, while throwing for over 3,000 yards, with 20 touchdowns to just six interceptions in only 14 games. He also added 568 yards on the ground with 4 touchdowns, had a winning record and made the Pro Bowl. His passer rating was ranked 7th in the league, yds per attempt 5th, yds per completion 5th, interception rate 5th, adj yds per attempt 4th, rushing 2nd, yds per carry 2nd and led all quarterbacks in rushing yards per game. He ranked has PFF's 9th best QB in the league. He proved big play ability. "He not only led the NFL in downfield passing percentage (19 percent of his throws traveled 20-plus air yards), but he tied Wilson for most passing touchdowns of 20-plus air yards (12). Most impressive: He finished with a 101.9 passer rating on vertical throws (20-plus air yards) while displaying the big-play ability that every NFL offensive coordinator covets in a franchise quarterback." - NFL.com. This guy is dynamic. Now to the deal. The Bills are only paying him $9.5 million next year which is absurdly low for a starting QB. If he doesnt play well this year there is an option for the Bills to get out of the deal. If he continues to be a franchise QB, they pick up the option and pay him $12.5 m in salary and a nice bonus. "That’d be a two-year take of $37 million — exactly the same amount as Brock Osweiler will make over the first two years of the four-year, $72 million deal he signed in March with the Houston Texans, except Osweiler actually hit the market and the full amount was guaranteed at signing." Bills can also opt-out after that year as well. If Tyrod continues to play as a franchise QB, he keeps on going with the contract and averages only $15m a year which is still ridiculously low for a starting QB (Osweiler $18m, Bradford $20m). "For now, the only guarantee is Taylor makes $9.5 million this year, and it’s up to the Bills — and Taylor’s play — to determine whether he collects anything beyond that." Bottom line, if he doesnt work out we get out of the deal very easily, and if he does work out we got the cheapest franchise QB in the league. Its a win-win for the Bills.
