The only thing I didn't like about the call is when they made it. There was still lots of time left in the game at that point, sure that means the defense is less suspecting but that basically just offsets the fact that you have inferior players out there attempting to retrieve the ball. I think Rex and Co. let their emotions get the best of them off of that huge KO return by McKnight. I don't think that is good coaching. You should harness your emotions not let them control your decisions. That being said, if Schillens does catch it we're definitely not having this conversation. Hell, it may have been the difference between an L and a W.
It was a good call because the Texans weren't expecting it. We would have pulled it off if Schillens didn't drop an easy catch.
Is it really that confusing to you? Obviously the refs discuss what they thought was a penalty and come to the conclusion that it wasn't actually a penalty.
I loved the timing of the call. The D was just on the field for a very very long time. Then we scored on the kick off putting us down 1 score. It was the perfect time for an onsides kick in my opinion. Unless you are doing it at the very end of the game in desperation time I can't imagine a better time to do an onsides kick.
Unreal... if it was successful would it have been the best call he ever made? How about Chaz catching the damn ball or the fact Houston had 2 guys on that side for the kick and they still come up with it. Converting the two 4th downs and going 3 and out on both of them I think killed us a hell of alot more.
Yup. You can't win on this forum. The call was excellent. Surprise onside kicks succeed 60+% of the time in the NFL. When playing a great team you need to pull out some stops. I don't see anyone second guessing Rex's decision to QB sneak a 4th and 1 at our own 30 yd line. Why? Cause it succeeded. It was a ballsier call IMO than the onside kick.
When u have the momentum, that's when u can try a trick onside kickoff. It should have been converted. Schilen had a clear shot at it, but just missed bringing it in. Im pretty sure you wouldn't have created this dumbass lousy thread if Schilen didn't drop the ball...
Can't complain about the onside kick. It was a good time to try to steal a possession, and the defense was tired. It probably should have worked, so they picked the right time to do it. If that had worked, it would have changed the game. That possession briefly did kill momentum, I noted as much to my friends right then. But it was more allowing two big run plays to get them deep inside our territory that killed momentum than not recovering the onside. Schilens should have had it, but it was right at the 10-yard marker. It looked like he might have recognized it and waited a split second longer to grab it. Still should have had it, but that could be part of why he didn't get it. And momentum doesn't mean much. It's better to do it when things look bleak to jumpstart the crowd, but that doesn't mean doing it after a big play is a bad thing.
When you return the touchdown and come within one score of a powerhouse, you better be able to trust your D to stop them in their own zone. Then you get the ball in good field position. Momentum was coming for the jets with that return, the D was starting to play a little better than in the first half. Stop trying to re-invent the wheel, kick that one away. He's a good coach, but at that time this was a bad call.
That "D" had just been on the field for a long 8 minute + drive and didn't get any time to catch their breath due to the quickness of the TD return.
