And that's why I want someone already established in the NFL. Experience is fantastic of course, but it's also who you know.

I don't disagree that we need a solid OC to come along with Rhule, but I don't know where the "meat and potatoes" thing is coming from. You don't go into Baylor and succeed as a meat and potatoes guy. The bolded is what makes him a good candidate. That's what you want. You want someone to adapt to what's here, not making what's here adapt to something else. Once Bates started adapting to Sam and put him in the shotgun, had him roll out, etc. there were noticeable changes. Imagine having that the whole year.

Cimini also thinks hiring any first time head coach is a mistake so he's gonna push that narrative hard. Rhule to me is like Richard... he needs to come with a solid staff for me to truly feel comfortable but at least he's got experience coaching both sides of the ball.

That is true, good point. I understand differing opinions but I always have to laugh when people make definitive statements based off their own opinion.
I believe it was 2 games, and yes they won both...But they gave up 34 points to the colts, so id pump the brakes a tad... just saying that the 4 years he was in charge is a much larger sample than the 2 games he called plays. Maybe just being a DC is his niche, im just not personally sold on that, where as if Rex Ryan was willing to swallow some pride and be a DC id be a hell of a lot more interested (not for the jets, that would be awkward, but for another team in need)
OR, it's because Rhule has used the same senior staff since he's been a head coach. So his "tree" is not that large.
So we're to assume the likely scenario is the GM picking the OC after hiring the HC... who would be accepting the job under the pretense that he can't hire his own staff? .....come on.
No... If this front office has learned from the last time, they will ask during the interview "Who are your preferred coordinators"; and this will be part of the vetting process. If this team hires another head coach that brings in his best friend, we have huge problems. If Mac and gang like a candidate a lot, but they feel their coordinators are weak, bet your ass he's offering a list of coordinators for him to speak with.
You're right, of course. On the other hand, the Jets were 2-0 with Bowles calling the D this year, and 2-12 without. If that doesn't speak to Bowles play calling prowess, it's a powerful indictment of Kacy Rogers--and thus of Bowles' choice to stick by his DC.
I sure as hell hope this is a major consideration. How are they going to build a staff? If these college guys don't have a solid answer then they shouldn't be a candidate for the job
Caldwell won't get the job because he isn't flashy enough but the Jets could do way worse by the way.
Meat and Potatos is still where it's at. Don't fall for the Gluten Free Kale fads that are popular with kids today. If a coach isn't concerned with ball control and defense, I want no part of them. Rhule is becoming more interesting to me. Fad football philosophies like Chip Kelly are just a flash in the pan. Not sustainable.
