I think that will be markedly different this season for a couple of reasons. One, it's like trying to compare apples and oranges. They are different teams with different levels of talent at TE and WR, and QBs with differing philosophies and preferences. The Dolphins' TEs in 2016 were Dion Sims and Marqueis Gray. Ryan Tannehill was the QB and only started 13 games. His WRs were Devante Parker, Jarvis Landry and Kenny Stills. Would you have thrown to Sims and Gray over those three WRs? In 2017, Wikipedia and Pro Football Reference seem to disagree. Wikipedia says that the TEs that year were Anthony Fasano, AJ Derby, Thomas Duarte and Marqueis Gray. Pro Football Reference says that the TEs were Julius Thomas (started 12 games and had 41 catches), Anthony Fasano (started 7 games), and Marqueis Gray. Jay Cutler was the QB and he started 14 games. His WRs were again Jarvis Landry, Devante Parker and Kenny Stills. In 2018, Ryan Tannehill was again the starting QB (11 games). His TEs were Nick O'Leary (8 catches in 7 games started), rookie Mike Gesicki (22 catches in 16 games, 7 started), and Durham Smythe. His WRs were Danny Amendola, Devante Parker and Kenny Stills. 2017 is the only season Gase had any quality TEs to throw to. In all three seasons, he had very good WRs. Why would he have thrown to the TEs a lot, yet Thomas caught a lot of passes in 2017? I don't know if Tannehill or Cutler like throwing to their TEs, but Cutler evidently did since Thomas had 41 receptions. Two, I know that Sam likes throwing to his TEs, with the Jets' question marks at WR and an almost totally new OL, imo it would be dumb not to utilize both Herndon and Griffin a lot in the passing attack, as well as Bell. Unless the Jets focus on running the ball a lot, if both get healthy and stay that way, I could see both Herndon and Griffin having 40+ catches, and Wesco possibly having 15-20. I think Crowder will have 80+ and if Perriman is as good as I think he will be, I could see him with about the same number of catches. My expectations and hopes for Mims have dimmed considerably with his not being able to practice so far. I hope that he's used this time to really learn the play book and mentally running the routes.
