The Jets have had five QB's that took them to the playoffs more than once: Joe Namath - 1st round pick Richard Todd - 1st round pick Ken O'Brien - 1st round pick Vinny Testaverde - 1st round pick via another team Chad Pennington - 1st round pick The Jets have never had a QB that was not a 1st round pick that took them to the playoffs. Of the teams in the playoffs last year this is how things stack up: Pittsburgh - Ben Roethlisberger - 1st round pick Arizona - Kurt Warner - UFA Baltimore - Joe Flacco - 1st round pick Philadelphia - Donovan McNabb - 1st round pick Tennessee - Kerry Collins - 1st round pick NY Giants - Eli Manning - 1st round pick Indianapolis - Peyton Manning - 1st round pick Carolina - Jake Delhomme - UFA San Diego - Philip Rivers - 1st round pick Atlanta - Matt Ryan - 1st round pick Miami - Chad Pennington - 1st round pick Minnesota - Gus Frerotee - 7th round pick The evidence suggests overwhelmingly that if you want to be successful in the NFL that you do not allow good QB's to get by you in the draft. If there is a good QB prospect available on the 17 pick the Jets would be stupid not to take him given that they basically have 3 nobodies on the roster competing for the spot now. Could Ratliff come out of nowhere and turn into a great QB? Sure, it's happened before but there are 100 guys who tried to do that and failed for every one who succeeded. Could Clemens still be Drew Brees in disguise? Sure, 2nd round picks have proved out in the past after initial failures caused by a lousy line, however there is no compelling evidence at this point that Clemens is going to do that. He's not exactly firing up the coaching staff with his great potential and leadership qualities at the moment is he? Could Ainge come out of nowhere and turn into a great QB? Probably not because he really hasn't shown any aptitude to do that at the moment. If Sanchez is there on the 17 the Jets would be foolish not to take him because he's the one of those four guys who probably has a real chance to come out of nowhere and take the NFL by storm. He's the one that could be our QB for the next decade. And fortunately for us he's 6'2 and a half instead of 6'3 and he's coming out of a program that has produced a question mark recently in Leinart and he's coming out a year early and so people are squinting at him really hard. That's how a great prospect maybe drops to the 17.
You can't just look at one year of playoffs and call that overwhelming evidence. Just going back one year we can see more guys who weren't 1st round picks in the playoffs than who were. Ben Rothlisberger - 1st Round Pick Eli Manning - 1st Round Pick Phillip Rivers - 1st Round Pick Peyton Manning - 1st Round Pick Vince Young - 1st Round Pick Todd Collins - 2nd Round Pick Brett Favre - 2nd Round Pick David Garrard - 4th Round Pick Tom Brady - 6th Round Pick Matt Hasselbeck - 6th Round Pick Tony Romo - UDFA Jeff Garcia - UDFA
We really need someone to put some pressure on the QB. Id like either through FA or the Draft to get a 10-12 sack per season player. I hope Vernon turns it up this season but I doubt it he just doesnt seem to have the fire in him that great players need.
If he's related to Vernon Davis, he's got the physical attributes, but not sure he has what it takes in the head to become a solid nfl player...
thats why i'm hoping the FO thinks that they can have lightning strike twice with the 'Rookie HC, Rookie QB' tandem like last year... the percentages don't lie. And Jet history. Funny how the two 1st overall picks in Namath and Vinny T got us the furthest. With 83 being the other exception.
I'm still finding it hard to believe that Sanchez will make it to 17, if he does it is an easy decision.
Sanchez may go #1. Stafford might have more of a chance to drop. Also, none of the CBs posted blazing times today, so they might drop as well, including Jenkins, who many might project as a safety.
im not interested because he is vernon davis' brother. that guy was supposed to be a freak coming out of college, and he sucks.
I think they will both go in the top 10, if either one is available at 17 it is an easy decision. If either one is still hanging around at around 8 I would do whatever it took to secure one of them.
Freeman is my #1 choice for our 1st rounder, but I'm warming up to the idea of taking Vontae. I'd also be happy with Kenny Britt, Brian Cushing, or Sanchez. Edit: If he slips, which he might, Malcolm Jenkins would be my #1 player for us to take. I'd trade up to take him. He can be great at CB or Safety.
its amazing how no matter how good a player is from the neck down, it can go to shit if its not all together from the neck up. The mind wins over all
What's with the odd phraseology? Being different just to be different? It's be easier to write "at 1" and "at 20."
This is also my stance on the first round. Our offense is staring at about 25th in the league overall next year I'd guess with what we have. That's not good enough to compliment what will hopefully be an already improved defense just going on schemes, play calling, and situational awareness alone before any pick ups. I'd like Sanchez at 17, not likely, but stranger things have happened.
Have any of you watched the combine? Sanchez looks like shit. I also don't like his attitude. The coach is explaining the drill, and Sanchez is off to the side spinning a football on his finger, tossing it up in the air like he's bored silly, barely paying attention. He then went out and threw like donkey shit. This kid has bust written all over him. There will be far more potentaiily viable NFL QB's in next year's draft.
I saw the same thing and more. The rest of the QBs are getting to the LOS quickly and getting set to make their drops and this douche Sanchez is flipping the ball off the back of his hand as the coach is blowing the whistle, like he's showing off for the scouts - as if that were showing off for the scouts. That tells me that he's full of himself and thinks the NFL will come easily to him. I don't want us spending a 1st rounder on a turd like that.
