I like the idea of trading Mariotta to the Bears for 12 first round picks but that isn't realistic either.
I don;t like the idea of drafting 2 guys at the top of our draft who won;t even sniff the field. And the Center wonp;t sniff it for 3 years, most likely. No thanks. Now if we draft an OT int he third round who we think is talented but is a project, I might buy that. As for center, I will draft one when Mangold starts teetering. Centers are not long term projects.
Yeah, I agree; we should only take him if the coaches think he has strong potential to be our franchise QB. I would much rather trade down from the Mariota pick to a QB-desperate team who'd give us a king's ransom of early round draft picks.
Spread option QBs are extra hard to figure out as far as if they translate well to the NFL. Can Mariota trip up the D with a quick hand-off to his FB? Maybe, but we don't know. He's never played with a FB. Can Mariota trip up the D by pump faking to a WR then hitting his TE on a deep seam? Maybe, we don't know. He's never played with a TE. Can Mariota take command of the huddle, possibly calling 2 plays in crunch time? Maybe, we don't know. He's never used a huddle in college. Can Mariota read defenses and change the play at the LOS? Maybe, we don't know. The Ducks ran the play as hand signaled in from the sidelines. Period. Can Mariota take the ball from under center and deliver a quick 3 step drop pass to his slot WR running a quick slant? Maybe, we don't know. Mariota took a total of 5 snaps from under center his entire college career. 5 step drop? Same answer. We know Russell Wilson struggled with this play just recently. Can Mariota become a franchise NFL QB playing from the pocket? Maybe, we just don't know. He's never been asked to. If Mac thinks the answers to all these questions (and many more) is YES! YES! YES! then absolutely take him at #6. But if not, then take a stud WR or OLB or trade down and save setting the Jets back another 3 years.
Agreed. Dalton Freeman looked fairly decent last year when Mangold went down with the sprain. LT is certainly the priority of the two.
doesn't exactly match there win now moves they have made..then use there most important picks on players who won't play right away.
im fine wit bruck but mangold i agree needs to be replaced sooner rather then later. he was awful last season.
I have a feeling The Titans are gonna make a big trade and we are gonna be left without Mariota and only our num 6 pick
Got a better idea..if MM is at 6 hijack and don't look back. The idea of not getting a Franchise QB absolutely astounds me. The FO knows it can't go with Geno or Fitz long term. So I do believe no trade will happen. If noQB available then you exhaust yout BPA options. Somewhere in some round this team takes a QB
I don't really have any scenario in which an OL will be the BPA at #6. Even if Winston, Mariota, Fowler, Cooper, White, and Gregory go in the top-5, I'd rather take Beasley or Ray than an OL. That being said, if Cleveland is targeting a high priority pick (maybe if Mariota is on the board, or they really want a top-notch WR with Gordon a HUGE question mark) at 6, I'd love to trade down with them for their two firsts at 12 and 19. Then, I would be elated to pick up two offensive linemen. I'd love to take a guy like Scherff at 12 and then someone like Flowers/Peat/Collins at 19. Scherff would start at guard immediately, and our OT would battle Giac for the RT position this year. Our OT could take over for Brick when his time is done, and Scherff could either stay at guard or move to RT after that.
Are you implying this front office is all in this yr? We were one of the worst teams in the league because we lacked talent. Brick is a marginal one dimensional player at this point. The oline is fading fast, we aren't winning a Super Bowl with this team so why not use high picks for positions lt,g/c so we aren't screwed next yr when we have to replace 3/5 of the oline and don't have the resources to do it.
No, we don't need to waste a high valuable pick like that on a C when we got Mangold still kicking ass. LT in the 2nd or 3rd, sure. I'm not sure some people on this board realize just how damn good Mangold is. The guy has made 6 pro bowls (including the last 2 years), been a 3 time ALL pro, and almost never been hurt through a 9 year career. He's about as reliable and solid as they come. I've been reading people on here for the last few years saying that he was getting old, talk about clueless. Sure, he may slow down in 2-3 years but the guy's still got plenty left in the tank and he's still one of the best in the league at his position.
