Revis question, I just didn't feel like making a new thread. Is it even possible to give him the money he wants without putting it all in bonuses and incentives?
Probably not. The Jets are going to have do something on the order of the 49'ers with a funky structure.
im gonna give your boss a call and let him know that you should no longer be able to ask for a raise. i am sure you are just as replaceable as everyone else as well.
Idiocracy is alive and well. We cannot keep everyone or make them all happy. Sometimes the needs of the many outweigh the wants of the one. If you truly think Revis is not going to play his best this season if he doesn't get a new contract, then you are crazier than me.
Contractually the Jets are in a very strong position as we could keep Revis at 21 mills in 3 yrs... however it would also make sense to give him a prize for how well he played. All in all the right answer lies somewhere in between... You did a very nice job and we are going to give you more money but not too much because contractually we own your balls.
Pay alot now, or pay alot more later. Your theory of wait and see could cost the team millions more if he has another great year. He outplayed his rookie contract, that is clear to see. You either pay your good players or let them walk. Revis is a once in a decade talent at CB. You pay him.
If you truly think that the only thing that matters in this situation is how hard Revis will play next year then your crazier than I originally thought.
So you're telling me we would have to wait till 2017 to see another cornerback close to the talent level as Revis? Sheesh, dude had one "stellar" season and is being regarded as one of the best ever. The OP made a valid post but most of the replies made were slanderous and/or off topic.:jets: If the Jets break the bank on revis and gives him Peyton manning numbers, it's going to be interesting seeing which other superstars will want to play for league minimum to have the best football player of all time on their team. :breakdance:
You have to admit Revis is a rare talent though. It's not like you can just pick guys up from anywhere that play like Revis. I'm a little torn on the issue of giving him 15+ million, obviously I want him to be a Jet for life but not at the sake of losing other key components to our team. If anyone can figure it out it's Tanny.
Nobody but Revis himself knows how much he really wants but there is no way in the world the Jets will give him anywhere near 20 million. Probably not anywhere near 15 million and nobody really cares what senile old Al did. It would be crazy to think any new CBA won't include a cap or that anything done now will be grandfathered in. Every team in the NFL knows that and it's obvious by the deals that haven't happened this off season. Certainly they won't spend 15% of whatever cap they end up with on a CB. Not when there are usually three of them on the field. What if the others start playing well? Are they going to spend have their cap on CBs? I don't think so. He can leave and when he does he will find out nobody else will pay him that kind of money either.
Ok i dont hate this post as much as everyone else. If we can get a 1st and a 2nd round pick after we franchise revis after we buy back the next 2 years i dont think it would be the worst thing in the world as far as on the field ability is concerned. This is especially true if Kyle Wilson becomes a stud- which we would know by the time revis's extra years run out. The problem that i have with this is that the jets promised him a deal and are quickly gaining a reputation for not taking care of their own. Not resigning him would be detrimental to the street cred of the front office. Overall while i dont think Jetsfan is crazy like most of you, the juice just isnt worth the squeeze to not take care of revis
Revis is nice but expendable after his rookie contract is up. Ask yourself this, if revis plays out his rookie contract with kyle Wilson and cromartie around, whose to say the Jets will require his services. If Wilson and cromartie pan out, then not investing an insane amount of money on one player will keep the Jets as contenders for years to come by allowing the team to retain better players at the midlevel salary compensation. Heck even if cromartie plays well, then you will have a problem on your hands for fair compensation because Wilson is a lock on the team for a few years even if he is good or bad due to draft position. As far as being rare, there are a ton of corners that over the last decade that have put in work for 5+ seasons. Champ Bailey, Charles Woodson, Pat Surtain, etc.
Someone will you can be sure of that- That's what makes bad organizations bad. I'm not saying singing Revis would be bad but paying enormous amounts of money to positions that do not normally make that much is what puts teams in holes. I've said this in other threads, but if you look at the perennial contenders their payroll has very few guys making more then 10 and most are at or under 5 million.
Your new username sounds like a character from Star Wars. 2 of the main premises of your article are totally incorrect. Like WSW said, he isn't currently signed to a 6 year deal anymore, he met playing time incentives that voided the final 2 years of his contract. The Jets can buy back 2011 and 2012 for 5 and 15 million respectively, but you can bet that Tannenbaum would rather structure that differently due to the Revis is very possibly the best cornerback in the league at this point, if only for the main fact that he is at the top of his game and that top has reached the elite level. But whether or not you want to argue that he is the best or isn't, look at recent history and you will see players who top out at the Pro Bowl level and no better are getting the highest contract at their position due simply to cap inflation. Without Darrelle Revis in 2009, my estimate is that we likely lose at least 4 more games. That is the impact he had on our defense. Anyone that thinks he is expendable doesn't understand much about what Rex Ryan was doing last season.
Exactly, that's what makes him rare. If you haven't noticed a big key to a Rex defense is quality defensive backs and more importantly cornerbacks. I'd rather have all 3 CB's mentioned, having 3 dominate CB's would just make Rex's defense that much more versatile. When you can stick one guy on a opposing teams top WR and know for a fact he will be shutdown, that just opens up so much for Rex.
the fact of the matter is that this isnt baseball and it is nearly impossible for the jets to remain contenders for years to come if they keep all 3 for the long term. If cromartie plays well this year he will demand big bucks, kyle wilson will too after his rookie contract (or maybe before if he goes revis christ all over everyones ass) it would be hard enough paying #1 corner salary to 2 cb's let alone 3, especially if revis gets his 16 mill a year. Of course i would love to have all 3 on our squad for the next 7 years but it would be nearly impossible to do without really hurting other areas. And dont forget that hopefully the Sanchise will be getting a huge contract in a few years too. (I say hopefully bc if he gets a huge contract that means he becomes the franchise qb we all hope and think he will be)
@RichCimini I'll be talking Jets at 10:40 on 1050. I'm guessing we'll be talking contract disputes, not today's team charity golf tournament. I might listen to this. I have the day off, nothing else going on right now. Its better than watching replays of the Celtics game last night for the millionth time.
