Things have gotten so bad, this seems like an improvement. Remember when Chad Pennington would never turn the ball over? If we could put Pennington’s brain in Sanchez body, we would have won a SB already.

There is no possible way for anyone to know if Smith is the answer off of one preseason game. You have to play him. On the other hand we DO know Sanchez is not the guy.

we dont know that smith isnt the answer long term, but we can see that he is not ready to start for the jets or any nfl team right now. i have been worried about his footwork since seeing his pro-day footage (anyone with the time or energy to do so can look back and see it on this board...), and it seems as though he has not gotten much better. he shuffles his feet before throws, he turns 3-step drops into 7-8 steps, he throws with his arm a lot, and his pocket presence seems to be questionable.

at this point, you cannot guarantee there wont be problems with timing on pass plays nor can you guarantee there wont be an issue handing the ball off from under center. just based on that alone, mark is clearly a better option.

once geno gets his footwork down he will be considered to take the job, but he needs to work on his footwork, a lot.

I completely disagree. The happy feet thing is a joke, watch Peyton sometime. He does need work on his footwork but to say he is not ready to start is ludicrous he already does many things better than Sanchez

I agree with almost everything about this post except for the "a SB" part. If the Jets had Chad Sanchez in 2002, 2004, 2008, 2009, and 2010, there's a good chance that our favorite team would have gone all the way in at least two of those years. Sadly, it's not to be.

Looks like it's going to be a trial by fire for Smith.

who said anything about happy feet? the guys feet are all over the place coming from under center, and he throws with his arm when he cant get his feet set. those are fundamental problems that will lead to turnovers and other problems come game time

    Bingo!

This I why a lot of Jet fans suck, it's also why A LOT of these beat writers suck.

There is to much of this, if people actually watched the entire game instead of harping on some obvious mistakes, people would see that there were a lot of optimistic things that came from his performance as well. It is way to fucking early to say this kid isn't the long term solution.

The same things can be said for Sanchez. Yes, even Sanchez. He has looked way better this preseason then he has in any other system he's been in this far. Easily looks better, sure he's had a couple WTF moments still that drives everyone crazy but he has looked comfortable in this system this far.

People have to remember as well, they are not completely opening up the playbook yet either, not even close and we are already seeing a massive improvement between last years preseason and this years.

Just so people can kinda see the stats.

    Preseason 2012/2013 stats:

    Total yards - 32nd / 4th
    Passing yards - 32nd / 2nd
    Sacks allowed - 32nd / 11th

I mean, that's night and day. I know it's preseason but anyone with eyes can see a massive difference.

It is hilarious that people think we will be worse this year in contrast to last year.

    Comical.

I can't be sold on Matt Simms being more ready to play than Geno Smith. Simms has been playing against backups and cut casualties, and the 4th preseason game isn't going to give him much of a chance to play against anything else either.

If Mark can't go i'd probably go with McElroy. Obviously the issue here though is that McElroy is hurt and could be cut for Simms anyway. It's a tough call but in the instance Sanchez is just going to miss a few games and McElroy does indeed get cut i'd still go with Geno over Simms.

This board is the ultimate example of panic, rush to judgement, pessimism, and overreaction. People are acting as if the decision as to the starting QB for TB will mean that QB will be the starter all season. People are forgetting that the season is a marathon with ebbs and flows. People are putting way too much stock in the performance of a rookie QB in his first start in a preseason game. People are forgetting how misleading and irrelevant the preseason becomes once the season starts. People are ignoring how team and player performances vary from week to week. People are overreacting to the decision to play Sanchez to his injury. In one play Sanchez went from the most criticized and vilified player on the team to the most valuable. How did that happen?

The Jets are not making the playoffs. This is a rebuilding year. So why the panic? Jets fans need to ignore the local and national media and see for ourselves how this team performs from September into January. Nothing in the NFL was ever won in August. I can't even read this board after the Giants game. Endless posts of doom and gloom, of Smith is a bust, of amateur analyses of Smith's mechanics from people who watch games on their couches, of calls for Ryan's job before a single gem is played, of desperate calls for McElroy today QB, forgetting how poorly he played last year, to calls for a below average college QB to start (Simms) because he has an arm isn't Smith or Sanchez.

I'm going to wait until November or so before I pass judgement on this team. What if the Jets start 1-6 and finish 8-8? What if some other players at other positions step up? As usual, on this board it is all about the QB and it is all about deciding who is the future QB based on a ridiculously limited sampling. People are already talking about QBs to draft in 2014, as if Smith's fate is sealed and these college QBs are all future Pro Bowlers. It is comical and sickening at the same time.

After all the bullshit surrounding the "competition", I really don't care anymore WHO the starting Qb will be. Sanchez? Sure why not. We're not making a run and he might as well earn that $8.5mil he's guaranteed this year. Geno? Not ready but hey, trial by ordeal sometimes works. It could also turn Geno Smith into Joey Harrington.

Either way, 2013 will be a year of transition so bring on Mark Smith and let the good times roll.
