You are not giving any credit to the greatest Masturbater of all time, Herm Edwards. Hell, Herm wouldn't even start Cotchery in favor of McCareins. JUSTIN FUCKIN' MCCAREINS!! All in all, they are not in the same situation. Either way, I still don't think Clemens belongs to NFL.
Having read through the entire thread my only response is to point out that the fact-to-opinion ratio regarding KC, Ratliff and Ainge is totally out of whack. All we really know about all three is that they have the potential to be solid NFL starters and so far they haven't done that but might do it in the future. That's all we really know, until the season starts all we have is BS arguments for and against. This is the life of a sports fan during the off season, BS arguments on subjects that can't be decided due to lack of facts.
Fair point on Herm. Deep down do you really believe Clemens was drafted and the organization got behind him and were ready to live and die with him? I think that's a major flaw in the rebuilding process under Mangini and Tannenbaum and why we are even having this debate. I'm not convinced Clemens is the guy but I'm not convinced he isn't. Personally I don't think this team is building a real future until they get behind a guy and build around him. The idea of a competition seems a bad move to me. They have to evaluate the two guys and make a call. They can bring in a guy like Carr or Leftwich and maybe we get lucky with a Vinny type year but that's not how you build a winning organization that makes a run year after year and wins the big one. You have to evaluate and build around your pick. If your wrong move out of the way and let the next guy come in but not taking the plunge gets you just as fired.
Actually, yes and no. If Pennington had his arm fall off in 2006, that would have happened, I am sure. Instead, he comes back with 10-6 record. Now they had a situation where they drafted their QB a few seasons too early. I still think that, if they placed their bets on Clemens, they should have let Pennington go, like Chargers did, and Bears did. They didn't - and Clemens didn't impress anyone during that time either. I am not convinced that Clemens will be the guy either, but I agree that the team should get behind their guy and build around. I think either Ratliff or Ainge can be that guy. (If I had to choose, I would go with Ainge.) I don't buy this competition shit either. But I don't think this team needs another veteran. Maybe veteran BACKUP. That's about it.
That was the one positive of getting Favre we unloaded Pennington and have to shit or get off the pot. I don't see Ainge as anything more than a pure NFL back up if he can even do that. This is Clemens job to lose, Ratliffs job to win if he is simply unbelivable and maybe a vets chance to step in if both shit the bed.
I love your AVATAR but hate this comment...So what your saying is we are in a rebuilding mode? Cant go with that, spent too much money last FA period and we are built to win now..QB is a big part but we have to let KC and BR battle it out, draft a qb and let our DEFENSE win games...IMO
Well. I don't know - which is why I am not working for NFL franchises. I think Ainge does belong to NFL. If anything, he showed some uncanny awareness in the pocket while playing for Vols. That is, he rarely got sacked. In his senior years, he dropped back to pass over 500 times, only to get sacked 3 times. It's not like he did that while throwing poorly either - he posted 325/519 with 31TD-10INT while achieving that, at SEC nonetheless. That surely isn't an indicator of a clipboard holder to me.
I have to agree with most of this. Ainge is a ? mark, that may be awhile before we gat an answer. Brett and Kellen will cost next to nothing next year and will allow us to spend money elsewhere. Both the kids are young and have potential and know our system and players. No more stop gaps or waiting 3, 4, 5 games to "gel". With whats available out there this year whether FA or in the draft, it just doesn't do much for me. I cant imagine both these kids flaming out.
Being Jets fans, we are all very aware of that. He should have sent a thank you gift to Mo Lewis for helping launching his career.
What I'm CONFUSED about is in the article the "writer" says The team is unconvinced that Kellen Clemens, a former second-rounder, is capable of being Favre's replacement. But in the same article "We've got three quarterbacks on the roster, and I think we feel pretty good that in a competition among those guys, we'll end up with a pretty good quarterback," Johnson said. Where is the quote that says they are not conviced? even if it was anonymous..Is it because they said "spent a good portion of Tuesday studying the 2009 class of draft-eligible college quarterbacks." Of course they did they have to look at every position in the draft
Ok, I'll bite... Roger Staubach Steve Young Tom Brady Matt Hasselbeck Tony Romo Phillip Rivers Terry Bradshaw Bart Starr.... etc....
Nice post, winston. I take it you are all better from your cold! I agree with this post. I believe you have said some nice things about Carr, and I also agree Carr might have a good shot at success in the right setting. If I thought the Jets had nobody to play Qb, he might be a good candidate. Leftwich, I am not so high on, but that's a digression. But you are right - going for a vet to come into start is not what I want to see this team do. Build around a young guy. It hasn't been done effectively on this team since the O'Brien days (I say that because Herm and Bradway let the rest of the team decline during the Chad period). Now's a good time to try it again.
Carr is the one guy I would have liked if they brought in, but it looks like he's staying with the Giants.
