3 sacks doesn't even begin to tell the story. Fitzpatrick was under duress all day. and outside of 1 drive they couldn't run the ball for shit. outside of the special teams- the offensive line was the worst unit today. so no, I can't find other things to worry about
News flash: When you go empty or send everybody, including the RB, out on pass routes and the other team blitzes, the QB will get hit. It's simple math, 5 < 5+. It's a trade off for 390 yards. Also lets not act Fitz was getting hit all day. The protection was shaky early but once they figured their blitz packages out, he had all the time he needed, sans JPP owning Breno with one arm.
I totally agree with you about the empty sets (this is one of the main reasons that I generally hate empty sets), but I think you are underplaying how poorly our offensive line pass-protected in that game, for large stretches.
I'm just saying that when I think of worrisome o-lines, I think of a lot of other teams before I get to the Jets. Just my opinion but the whole our oline is poor narrative that I keep reading week after week is tired and way overblown.
I think the main problem is that their play has swooned, more than anything else. But again, I don't think they were very good today and thought they were actually bad two weeks ago in Houston. I don't think we are bad on the offensive line by any means, but I also think we aren't playing anywhere near as well up front as we were earlier in the season.
I walked out of the rom when he fielded it on the 7 yard line. My work colleague kept asking me what was wrong, I said this guy is doing the Giants special teams job for them. How does the CS keep him in there?
I doubt it's personal. He probably doesn't turn his head in practice, like we've seen him do all the time. He's not that good, and Bowles has no alliance to him.
Winters should be cut (we need to add talent before we can afford for that to happen). Carpenter is much better than any guard we had since Matt Slauson left and Brandon Moore got too old. He may not be worth quite as much as he is paid but clearly and upgrade over Colon or Winters. I like how Giacomini will literally give out runners a push near the goal line but he is nothing to write home about. As much as I like Mangold and appreciate what Brick once was both guys are paid a ton now and it only gets worse each year with their existing contracts. With an aging Hitman Harris and a young Maudlin to build around our LB core isn't any better than our OL.
The offense is effective whenever we have a running game ,it opens up everything for guys like Decker and Marshall. The way we used Powell today was perfect ,no one saw that coming
It certainly doesn't hurt when your OC calls plays that require the WR's to run PAST the 1st Down marker!! Maybe we could do more of that....
I thought it was kinda cool... that we got 2 time outs back in the final minutes of a half 2 games in a row, cause of an opponent injury
Speaking of timeouts....... Yes, I know we won, BUT Bowles clock management and the non use of timeouts, makes Herman Edwards look like Vince Lombardi.
The good things: 1. Fitzpatrick is a leader the team can rally behind. This was a huge come from behind win, which is one of the things we hadn't seen yet. 2. Marshall can take over the game for a series or two and make the other team forget Decker exists... 3. Decker can take over the game when the other team is trying to shut down Marshall. 5. The Jets have some depth to work with for the first time in a few years on both sides of the ball. 4. The run defense is beastly and come January if we're still in it that will count for something. The bad things: 1. Fitzpatrick is still running for his life too often and he wears a bullseye on his jersey when he does that. 2. Ivory seems to have one big series a game in him and then he disappears for awhile... 3. And so does the offense in the first half once he is gone. 4. The Jets secondary is very vulnerable to getting beat deep at this point. With Revis out I don't think the pass defense is much better than it was in 2013, maybe not that good. The ugly: 1. Special teams.
Special Teams have been beyond ugly. They are God-Awful. Bobby April should not return next season as his coaching and schemes just don't work.
Regarding the bold, you mean since we lost Colon, right. Winters downgrades the entire line but at least he's not anywhere near as bad as Hunter who was responsible for derailing our last playoff run.
good point, maybe it's karma coming back around to make up for some of the insanely bad sh!t that has happened to us in the past 3-4 years.
I read all the post game analysis on the OL I can get my hands on each game from sources I find to be reliable year in and year out. I also go by my own eyeball test. I think your dead wrong about Winters. He is no worse than below average whereas Hunter was CLEARLY at the bottom of all matrices. Winters might even have some small upside potential but don't hold me to that .
