I know I've been supportive of Mark Sanchez in the past, but I think I will be rooting for Geno Smith to win the competition. He's a much more experienced QB coming out of college than Mark was and he is used to a pass heavy offensive system. There's a front page article coming soon that explains it. Geno might seem behind because of Mark's NFL experience (most notably post season), but he has a good chance of winning the job come training camp. I believe that turnovers will be the biggest focal point of the competition, and that Geno Smith is miles better than Sanchez was in 2009. If Geno takes the reigns this year, he will probably have a better year than most of Sanchez years statistically.
I think Sanchez's experience is good, but you just have to look back at his most recent play, which was terrible. So he really needs to step it up if he wants to win the competition. I have to ask though, if Geno is miles ahead better than Sanchez was, then why was he drafted #39 overall and Sanchez drafted #5 overall?
i would rather have a qb that can win for us instead of a qb we can win with. i think mark is the latter
It doesn't matter if its Sanchez or Geno or some other top draft pick. If the Jets manage the roster around our QB the way they did with Sanchez we will struggle developing a franchise QB.
because Sanchez was drafted too high, he was reach. and because coming into their rookie seasons, Smith has more experience starting in college. draft number barely has anything got do with it.
I am not wrong on the Garrard thing. Its been reported multiple times that Garrard was brought in for competition and Sanchez's job could have been in jeopardy if Garrard's health held up. I really could care less that the only thing you think Sanchez had to work on was keeping 2 hands on the ball, but the fact of the matter is, is that Garrard was real competition. Now Im not saying he would have won, but it would have been a legitimate competition. The Jets wouldnt have wasted their time and money if they thought otherwise, because like you said, Sanchez has only missed one game in 4 years due to injury. No QB in this league has to only work on keeping 2 hands on the ball. Every QB is working on his footwork, chemistry with receivers, mastering the playbook, becoming more accurate and perfecting their mechanics, understanding defensive concepts ect ect ect. Sanchez is learning a new playbook, his arm strength, mechanics, footwork and accuracy have all regressed. If the main thing he is working on is simply keeping two hands on the ball, we are fucked if he's our starting QB, and Geno will be starting in no time. Yeah, MM said that he's working on keeping 2 hands on the ball, but if you truly think thats all Marty has Sanchez fixing/working on, you are beyond naive. I agree competition is a nice mantra. I mean, it didnt work for Seattle, giving Russel Wilson a shot to be a starter. There's competition at almost every position. Its stupid of you to name about 1 or 4 positions that competition doesnt truly exist (C, LT, CB1, DE1). Why cant Willie Colon compete? As much hate as Vlad gets around here, he's truly not that terrible. We also have Winters who could start as well. Competition breaded Russel Wilson, Alfred Morris, Mike Vick in Philly 3 years ago, arguably Kaepernick, Arian Foster, BJGE, Miles Austin, TY Hilton, Vontaze Burfict, ect... Point is that competition can only really do good things. At S, WR, TE, G, QB, CB, OLB, and even RB, there should all be competition. It seems like they even want competition at K and Longsnapper also being that they brought in some players for tryouts.
agreed, and now we have a new architect placing the pieces. right now, do you feel mark is the qb to build around?
It really is reading too much into a statement to fit a viewpoint. Theres reading between the lines and then theres fishing for something to spin your way. And it all never made any sense anyhow, giving subversive statements that so clearly depict how one man has already won while also continuing a narrative that its a competition to quell the ignorant mob that wants our worthwhile QB gone... by giving obvious hints that he's won. ... and then the media makes up its mind that sanchez is in the lead anyway based basically off one guy that said he was, thus making the point to having a false competition a pointless waste of time. They could have cut the bull and said he won based on his actions if it were so obvious and progress from there giving each QB appropriate attention, but nope we have a narrative to keep going despite the fact that it isn't working. Or maybe the jets gave that subtle wink and nod to their fans that know better because they knew it would allude the more ignorant part of the crowd... Oh, now I'm reading too much into it. Nope, they still aren't sure who's starting day 1. it might take a stellar outing from smith to get the job more than it does sanchez but the competition is real.
Well they finally brought in a competent positional coach & an OC with a proven record for developing QBs. We'll find out if they finally start surrounding the offense w/ explosive weapons.
Profootballtalk:Geno Smith deal ties big money to workout bonuses Posted by Mike Florio on July 22, 2013, 6:11 PM EDT If any NFL agents are thinking about writing rap lyrics bashing Jay-Z, they now have a little ammunition. Per a source with knowledge of the details of the deal, Jets quarterback Geno Smith’s contract ties nearly $700,000 to Smith participating in the team’s offseason voluntary workout program. Specifically, $276,328 of Smith’s $861,328 compensation in 2015 depends on Smith showing up for the otherwise voluntary offseason drills. In 2016, $414,491 of Smith’s $1.08 million compensation in 2016 is tied to working out in the offseason. Typically, players must participate in 80 percent of the offseason workouts to earn the bonus. For Smith, this puts extra pressure on him to be able and willing to show up and work out in the final two years of his deal. If he fails to meet the minimums, he’ll potentially lose hundreds of thousands of dollars. It’s not unprecedented for the Jets to use workout bonuses in rookie deals, but the amounts have been much lower. Last year, for example, second-round receiver Stephen Hill had $50,000 tied to workout participation in 2013, and $100,000 each in 2014 and 2015. Still, some will look at the decision to tie nearly $700,000 of compensation to Smith’s decision to show up and work out as an indication that the Jets are concerned that, without a clear financial incentive to put in the work, Smith won’t. Some also may wonder whether the Jets noticed something during the 2013 offseason program that gave them concerns about Smith’s commitment to the otherwise voluntary sessions. The clause also sets up inexperienced agent Kim Miale and her boss, Jay-Z, for criticism from the agent community, which tends to criticize anyone and anything if it means helping them expand their portfolio of clients. In this specific case, given the details of the rookie deals signed by the players taken before and after Smith, the criticism may be justified.
so basically he has to show up to OTA's in his third and fourth season or he won't get a large sum of due cash. weird, he doesn't strike me as the type to not want to do that and if he does start he'll likely have to become locker room leader anyhow.
I truly think Marty is the best OC we've had in a long long time. He's a straight coordinator too, he had his time as a HC. It would be great to have him and Rex coach this team for the long run.
mark was a complete and utter fuck up last year - it was unbelievable how inept he was on all levels. i honestly think the only reason he succeeded in the first 2 years was because of the option to LT to constantly save his ass Unless Smith is proving himself incompetent in practice and also in the preseason... I think we MUST give him the starting nod
Today. Yes. Geno can grow, rather than be Another in a long line of fucked up QBs. Sanchez has rime with the cast, playoff experience, and considering the OCs. The Jets have a 60 million dollar investment riding. Both players are now signed for several years. Sanchez should get the nod, and Geno should get a chance to grow and get his feet wet. IMO, the only offense that would suit Geno, from day one is the Pats slot driven offense. You have 2 new guards. A shaky skill cast....why put that on a kid transitioning from the Airraid, when salary wise you are committed to sanchez, who...still managed 6 wins last year with absolute shit to work with?
I wasn't asking you. your opinion is well known here. I specifically wanted to know how another poster felt about marks potential moving forward. thanks for chiming in with the same stuff you have been posting ad nauseum though
ive come to the point where i treat hobbes posts like champs posts. i will skim for a second but usually dont read past the 4th word.
