I think having an Asian man named Robert Lee on the UVA broadcast was just as likely to offend Trumpers who would see it as some type of ironic liberal tweak towards their pro-white sensibilities. ESPN was in a no win situation. I also think they preferred being criticized for being overly PC to having a bunch of heavily armed angry white nationalists (a small segment of Trump's base) show up to protest the indignity of this slight on Robert E. Lee and white America.
