His administration changed the course of American politics for a generation and the after-shocks are still with us going on 30 years later. LBJ - Vietnam and the Great Society. Jackson - Founder of the Democrats, initiated the spoils system for federal offices and signed the Indian Removal Act. U.S. Grant - oversaw Reconstruction, signed legislation creating the Department of Justice and generally presided over the federalization of many law enforcement functions to try to put down the KKK. Also supported passage of the Fifteenth Amendment during Reconstruction, which guaranteed a citizen's right to vote in state and federal elections. Reagan - Reformed the tax structure to make it far more regressive, presided over a regional realignment that is with us still, oversaw a massive increase in the national debt and institutionalized the process of running a large deficit each year to maintain lower taxes, pressured the USSR with a stepped up conventional arms race that set the stage for liberalization in the Soviet Union and the eventual fall of that empire.
