Smith has a long road ahead of him to become an effective player. He missed OTAs last year then missed most of camp due to the rib injury. He's going to miss most of the activities this offseason due to the knee injury. The guy has barely had a chance to acclimate himself to the NFL because he's not even out there training. He needs to put some muscle on and run with more leverage. He got pushed around a lot this season, and I think on the play where he got injured a shove that took him off balance led to it. However it works out for him, we need to target WR again in the draft this year. The roster is scary after Marshall & Decker.
Mac should have drafted Amari Cooper instead of Devin Smith. What an asshole. Somebody get a billboard ready. _
It sucks this shlimazel of an OP started this thread as a trolling attempt because there is a reasonable discussion that can be had about this draft pick and how it developed.
Why is nobody talking about how Mac drafted Jarvis Harrison when Brandon Scherff went 5th overall? Definitely his most underrated mistake.
it's very early but I don't like what I've seen from smith and I think he was picked way too high. he's soft and his hands are bad. He'll have next year to prove himself but if it's more of the same he's a wash.
Should've drafted that Clark Kent kid. He ran a 4.20 millisecond 40 yard dash, benched 225 lbs until the entire measuring crew died of dehydration, and his vertical leap height was "a tall building."
I took the thread somewhat seriously until the same OP said Pryor is overrated, makes me think he didn't even watch the Jets this year. However, Devin Smiths ability to stay healthy really concerns me. He's turning into the offensive version of Dee Milliner, where you can't criticize the player for being bad because they got hurt, but the catch 22 is that they always get hurt. Being available is the most important thing in the NFL, and just because a guy is talented doesn't mean anything if they are never healthy.
Its a black mark if he's offf the team in a year or two.....Its not a black mark yet.Right now its only a scratch. The pick never excited me much.....We never seem to hit on second round picks
We would be looking at the season differently for Smith if the QB could hit a deep pass. He was open plenty of times. Also, if he catches that pass in Houston too, but that's more on him. Sent from my SM-G928V using Tapatalk
I don't see this is a mistake on Macc's part , it was a need for us and Smith was a player who filled that need. He was a productive receiver at Ohio State, it just didn't go as planned here.
My take exactly. Devin was the PERFECT weapon for Geno Smith (remember Geno? Our incumbent QB?) Maccagnan's only fault is not foreseeing Geno getting his jaw busted and being forced to call upon a 32 yr old QB with a broken leg. Had Macc known this (and apparently he should have) Macc would have drafted a RT to help keep Fitz on his feet. Back to Devin Smith: Devin is not a 6'-5" Megatron taken first overall. Devin is our next Jericho Crochery but with speed who single handily carried the Buckeyes to the National Title. Devin finished his time at Ohio with 121 receptions for 2,503 yards and 30 touchdowns. I'll give the kid a pass, considering he came here for his 'go routes' only to end up with Fitz (no go routes) and having to learn route trees on the fly (after missing camp). Again, Devin is not Megatron, but he will become a solid #2 pick.
Couldn't find a Pryor one but here is one of his other instant classics, "Geno Smith is the best player on this team", http://forums.theganggreen.com/threads/geno-smith-is-the-best-player-on-this-team.81104/ Never expect much from a Jetfannerd thread
The comparison to Jericho Cotchery is a pretty poor one. He's a sure handed possession receiver whom excels on third down and making catches with defenders draped all over him. Go back and watch Cotchery highlights. Devin Smith is a Ted Ginn clone who seemed to have much better hands and ball tracking ability than Ginn did coming out of college. Unfortunately he looks to be about the same player as him who can't return kicks.
too early on Devin Smith. Give him another 1 - 2 years before making an assessment. He punctured a lung in training camp and was behind the curve, then came back and tried to find himself a role in the offense, then was forced into a ST role he wasn't familiar with then tore his ACL. It was a rough year for him for sure, but let's hold off on the B word.
