Because he has a contract obligation. Your argument is a general argument for any player in the league who is currently under their rookie contract. Every player has a different market value on the open market and they're all well above NO market.
Which part of, if he sits out a year....he's still in the same boat are you not getting? He remains at this point in his contract until he decides to resume working. He can't just sit out a year, and be done with his contract. HE HAS TO PLAY OUT THIS YEAR, to get anywhere....
That $16,000 sure is a lot of money, he's talking about "feeding his family" he's taking away his resources to feed his family, God knows how bad things will be if he doesn't get a dollar of income this up and coming season if he sits out
The whole concept of 'market' vs. contractual obligation eludes you...doesn't it? In order to have a market value, you have to be able to get ON THE MARKET. Mevi$ has zero chance of getting there.
According to rotoworld it's a 5 year $42 million contract, so that's 8.4/year. I don't see how that gives Revis any more leverage.
He can't get way more than that, he's under contract. He has 0 market value for himself. No leverage whatsoever except that the Jets are not as good without him
Completely understand that he has to be on the market. However I'm talking about true market value and we both know that is well above $1 million. He will get more than $1 million whether he A.) gets a new contract from the Jets or B.) gets traded and restructures his exsiting contract with another team. That's what I'm saying. Good find, I didn't see that posted anywhere on Rotoworld or any other site. It being around 8.4 without incentives doesn't give them as much leverage. It does show the reason behind a pay raise for Revis though, as Haden would earn more than Revis over the next 3 years. Also when I look at this situation, Revis has a lot less cards in his deck than the Jets do. Seeing a rookie CB sign a contract with 26 mil in guarantees, its another straw his camp can reach for because I haven't read a report yet saying the Jets have even offered more than 26 mil guarantee. But we all agree Revis deserved a pay raise, so I am just contributing to this nonsense knows as the Revis thread.

This would seem like a contract that wold fit both sides' limits(WARNING: NO BASIS IN REALITY WHATSOEVER): 10 years, $120 million with $40 million guaranteed, and an additional $40 million in salary escalators and incentive bonuses, including incentives specific to health, in-season performances, workout deadlines/goals, playoff performances and Super Bowl appearances. Revis has the chance to earn every penny that he is asking for, provided he proves he is worth it on the field year in and year out, and stays healthy while the Jets are protected against injury or a drop in ability, as unlikely as that may seem. Then again, I'm not a GM, an NFL player, or an agent.
105 mil 8 year extension on top of his current deal gets you there with a 25 mil SB. He pockets 26 mil this year. instead of 5/15 you pay him 10 a year in 2011,2012... Thats 46 mil IN HIS POCKET over 3 years...1 mil more than Aso 80 remaining over 8 is 10 mil a year, plus the pro rata portion of the SB, puts him at about 12.5 year on the cap. I have to think they offered some variant of that by now. And that keeps him a Jet for life. I think part of the problem here, is at what point does he go Ty Law all over again....
Base salary is extremely misleading and overrated. All those bonuses he received affects the base salary.
