Risk nothing? ROFLMAO Passing up a possible FQB risks PLENTY. A FQB is worth 3-4 great OL. We don't have to have a another stud at RT to have a great OL. Drafting Sewell would be a luxury that the Jets cannot afford, and would be dumb. Even #4 is way too high to take a RT. Slater is an OT, he is NOT a C. Some people think he's is better than Sewell and will be drafted earlier than Sewell, so where you are thinking of drafting him is wrong as well.
I want to sell the # 2 pick to the highest bidder but it needs to include a 2022 1st round pick + 1st in 2021 then turn around and trade Sam for whatever you can get. Stockpile picks and keep taking the best player on your board. That would give us 3 1st rounders next year to take a FQB instead of this year.
So, you suggest we play some journeyman like Flacco this year, who can probably give half decent production (way better than we had from Sam this year), then with better coach, draft picks, and other improvements say end up like Miami, with #18 overall. Then how much do we have to give up to move up to get top QB? Will there even be one like Fields, which the team at the top 5 or so range will be willing to trade away. Right now I don't see one, but someone might emerge and probably go #1. And how much will we need to give up to get one to move up into the slot? I suspect a lot. Then we are not gaining anything by not taking QB, and may be losing more and not having as good a prospect at the spot we land. Therefore, this proposal makes no sense. I think we need to set our priorities straight. It's is clear QB is the most important position, and we are the worst at it. We have a #2 pick, and this is a rich QB class, even without Trevor. The smart move is not to screw around and pick the best one we can with #2 and start developing him ASAP with new good coach. This is not unlike 2017. We also had the worst QB play, didn't win many games, and signed a veteran QB stop gap. This caused to miss out on Mahomes and Watson. At least at that time 2018 QB class was projected to be QB rich too, though Mac managed to screw it up as well. Now THIS class is QB rich with 5 projected in round one. It makes no logical sense to wait out just so that we may (or may not) be able to trade up next year, when the QB class looks worse.
QB is very important to succeed in the NFL. Mahomes and Rodgers are the best of the best. Brees and Brady are all-time greats. Allen, Baker, and Lamar all played pretty well. Literally only Jared Goff is a questionable QB headed into the 2nd Round and he was the #1 overall pick and has the #1 defense in the NFL with a great Head Coach. The point is, the Jets need to be thinking about that when making a decision with the #2 overall pick. Can this guy lead the Jets to deep playoff runs and potential Super Bowls in the future? I am not sure Sam can anymore. I think it is possible, but 50/50 at best. Can Justin Fields? Can Zach Wilson? Can Trey Lance? Can Kyle Trask? Can Mac Jones? If Joe Douglas feels any of them give the team a better chance than Sam, I think he needs to take them at #2 overall. If he doesn't then he can keep rolling with Sam, but you need a QB if you want to win. Look at the Jets with Mark Sanchez or the Jaguars with Blake Bortles. Good teams, but in the end lose to franchise QB's in the AFC Championship Game. You need to build a great roster to go on a deep run, but you most likely need a great QB too. Those are harder to find. If he is there, take him. Don't mess around.
Goff - pick 1 Mahomes - pick 10 (3rd QB taken) Rodgers - pick 26 (2nd QB taken) Brees - pick 32 (2nd QB taken) Brady - pick 199 (7th QB taken) Allen - pick 7 (3rd QB taken) Baker - pick 1 Jackson - pick 32 (5th QB taken) See how that works? None of the QB's left in the playoffs were forced picks except for Mayfield, Goff and Mahomes and Mahomes was only forced in the sense that KC made a trade up to get him. If you want a franchise QB who will be around for a decade and a guy is sitting there who is clearly #1 pick material you take him. Otherwise you sit on your pick and wait for the value to come to you. The HoF QB that has been ousted so far is Roethlisberger - pick 11 (3rd guy taken.) The over drafted guy who has been ousted is Mitchell Trubisky - pick 3 (reached for as 1st QB.) The Jets have a great seat in this draft. They're picking #2 and it's very possible there are teams out there over-evaluating the QB's or looking at somebody at a different position they can pencil in for a decade. This gives the Jets an excellent chance at trading down and getting the 3rd QB at the sweet spot for his value. It's even possible that nobody is over-evaluating the QB's and the Jets might wind up with the 2nd QB at the sweet spot for his value. Until we get to the combine we just don't know what faults these guys are going to show that tempers the buzz around them and causes them to fall.
QBs stock typically rise during the pre-draft process not fall. If there is a QB they really like they should probably not mess around and just take him at two.
QBs really aren’t that hard to find anymore. Ten years ago I’d agree with you, but we are getting to a point where there some day soon may be 32 guys on this earth who can at least adequately do the job. Just because the Jets have continuously drafted awful QBs doesn’t mean they should stop trying. Good organizations learn from their mistakes. The question shouldn’t be “why isn’t Darnold as good as he was projected to be?” It should be “Why did I get Darnolds NFL projection wrong?” Was Darnold actually a good QB in college who just regressed badly in the NFL due to a difficult situation, or were there some red flags on tape that everyone missed?
I also think they should take a QB at 2, but trading down makes sense from a team building standpoint so I could live with that decision. Actually drafting a non-QB at 2? You are correct in saying that is a luxury the Jets cannot afford.
I’m referring to the same route KC took in development. They put pieces in place like Kelce, Tyreek, Fisher and then dropped Mahomes in on a platform to succeed. Chargers did the same with Herbert they had Allen/Williams/Ekler. Philly did it with Wentz when they went to a SB and LA did it with Goff when they went to the SB. The QB was the last piece of the puzzle. Darnold is a bust we might as well get something while we can and see what we have in Morgan this year.
That's only operating under the assumption that taking Fields is a "forced pick." And it sort of stands to prove that you should take a first round pick if they're available as the only two quarterbacks left that weren't first round picks were drafted almost two decades ago. It's not impossible to find a non-first round QB. But it's much harder as the position has become much more premium.
QB does not have to be the last piece of the puzzle. This is the most important position, which should be addressed when there is a good opportunity. Sometimes it is last piece, sometimes it is not. In the 2019 draft for instance there were not any QBs similarly talented to Lawrence/Fields/Wilson. Murray was lock for #1, so the possible opportunity for whoever needed a QB would be to trade up/take straight up Jones/Haskins. That is no where near Fields/Wilson/Lance/Jones/Trask pool. In 2020 there were three really talented ones (Burrow, Tua, Herbert), and all went top 6, with teams not entertaining trades and wanting to take a QB. You could really only get Love if you are outside of top 6. And Miami could be on the market again next year. Hopefully Bengals won't be, but that Burrow injury was pretty scary. The point is that next year who knows if it will be a rich class, if teams will entertain offers, how much it would take to move up, if possible at all. The opportunity is here now. Haven't we learned from 2017 when Mac wanted to wait and see what Hack can do and got a vet as a stop gap? Now you are suggesting the same exact thing. Morgan will still be there, but he is a later round pick. There is a strong QB class NOW. 5 guys will go first round. We are well positioned to take a really good talent. We are in the second year of rebuild with good draft last year and Jamal trade. The time and opportunity to get FQB is NOW.
Yes but haven’t we learned anything from the Darnold disaster?! We surrounded him with nothing and he amounted to nothing. We ruined him because he had a bad OL and not much out there catching the ball. I firmly believe if Fields isn’t 100% a FQB then u trade back build this team from the inside out and set our FQB up to succeed. Mahomes and Watson went 10/12 as well so not necessarily first overall will be a FQB. Fields could be the real deal and if JD feels he is then I’m ok with it. If he doesn’t because he struggles against a top D for the 3rd time tonight we need to trade back and let’s see what we have in Morgan next year.
People stating you need a top QB to win the superbowl have the cart about 4 steps ahead of the horse. Unless we are planning on making a superbowl run next season that I don't know about?
