The other huge factor is that the Jets do not have full control of the brand anyway. There are many things that they could do to derive revenue from the Jets operations that they are not allowed to do under the NFL's rules. As an example, the Jets would derive a lot of annual revenue out of making a reality TV show about the team and it's various escapades and misadventures. They could license the entertainment provided in many different ways and they'd grow the brand tremendously in the process. Rex would be an enormous asset in a reality TV sitcom that followed the Jets adventures from week to week during the season. The problem is the NFL would object to programming that portrayed the Jets or the NFL in a negative light, even if it raised tremendous revenues for the Jets.
it has nothing to do w/ professionalism and everything to do w/ wins and losses. The funny thing is our guys stay out of trouble off the field unlike every other team but for some reason b/c our guys talk or rex has a dopey tatoo our guys lack professionalism.
You are 100% correct in that it has everything to do with W/L. I mean, isn't that the whole purpose of this game? To Win? All the Jets have to do is win, something they just can't get right.
people didn't seem to mind Rex's foot fetish stuff, Sal Alosi, etc... when we were making the title game in '10 but when you lose people will make a million excuses but it all comes down to wins and losses.
Junc, let go of the tattoo for a moment. You're talking about thousands of dollars in fees for the PSL's. Wins comes with being professional on the field as well as having dicispline on it. The Jets are known for talking shit and not backing it up. Is that worth 40-50-60grand? Hell no it isn't. The tattoo is only another manifestation of what's wrong with the Jets. Its small potatoes compared to folks not seeing the value in keeping or paying thousands of dollars for the priviledge of buying tickets to see this team. That would actually consider defaulting, and by doing that ruining their credit, because they just don't see the value in the team anymore is a neon sign flashing danger ahead for the Jets.
I don't care about the tattoo and the Jets backed it uo 2 of the 4 years Rex has been here. How many years were guys like Strahan talking before they finally won and that run changed the entire perception of his career. If folks were dumb enough to buy PSLs(No offense to anyone here) then that is on them. I gave up my tickets and still go to every game but pay a fraction of what I used when I was a seaso ticket holder and I will keep going. Others won't keep going if they suck but that place will be full if they are winning. It's that simple. in that sensationalized article they discuss the play on the field why folks may default but that's BS. How do we know their financial situation hasn't changed? It's just a pile on the Jets article. We have been through MUCH darker times around here than 2 title games in 4 years. if fans want to jump ship let them be bandwagoners for other teams.
Well paying that much money to see any football team is stupid, unless the owner made a deal with the devil to have a winning season every single year. You are going to have some down years and some embarrassing moments. It's far easier to just either get season tickets or get game to game tickets.
OK Junc, lets say you're the Marketing VP of the New York Jets. How exactly would you pitch this team to this market given everything that's happened over the last 4 years..?
Some people think Leon Hess did exactly that.. Seriously, You don't set a price for a commodity unless you think that you can get that price. Initially, Woody was getting that price even before Rex and the circus came to town. Even though the PSL's weren't popular, they were purchased. Now here we are even after the two AFCCGs which we are constantly reminded is the best stretch in the 53 year history of the franchise and there's this mad rush to dump the PSL's and/or sell their tickets. There's been down years before this but to publically state that you'd consider defaulting just to get out from under your Jet obligation isn't the best selling point of the franchise is it..
This team had a 25,000 season ticket waiting list before PSLs. we were always sold out(that didn't mean everyone always showed up) but now they are dealing w/ new issues. I think to sell the team back to the fans they need to lower prices and show they are committed to winning and they can win folks over. I always knew PSLs would be a huge short term gain for them but would hurt them long term. In this era teams get good and bad right away, ANY team is a year away from their next playoff app w/ good offseason moves. The last time we seemed to be going nowhere Rex took over a team, drafted a rookie QB and led us to the title game. The "experts" thought the giants were dead going into 2011, things change quickly and when we start winning againt he fans will be gung ho again only to jump ship as soon as we start losing. That's what fans do.
They built half of a 1.6 billion dollar stadium They had to have something to offset some of that cost. PSL's are a reality. We're never going to get away from them in the big markets at this point. However teams that sell them then *must* put a good product on the field or they won't be able sell tickets well. Let's say that a sizeable number of PSL holders do default on their agreements. How are the Jets going to sell those PSL's again when they haven't yet sold all of the original offering? The Jets can't be a marketing based organization and survive at this point. They have to be a competitive organization that then markets the successes on the field well. They need to do whatever they can to get there quickly. This includes not having a lot of false steps in this transition.
No they didn't, the fans didn't ask for a $1.6 mil tin can. They had TWO teams splitting the bill, got twice the money from the NFL and still had to fleece the fans for PSLs. They are getting what they deserve for fleecing the fans. I don't know if teams will keep selling PSLs as attendance continues to decrease around the league w/ the league becoming more popular. People aren't going to games the way they used to b/c it is not catered to the real fans.
Everyone was riding Cromartie's dick for smack talking Brady when they killed that Pats at home 28-21 for the divisional game. Junc hit the nail on the head - the tickets are not priced to fans. I gave up my seats when the PSL's priced me out of worthwhile seats (137, row11, 3&4). 7 years in the old building and my sister was still on the waiting list for 2 more seats when the new building went up. She got her $ refunded when I told her my seats where offered to me at a bargain for $5000 each. F that.
The NFL has made the at home experience much better than going to the game... The NFL has a long term problem as people are simply content to watch games at home...The Dolphins have this problem...After a decade+ of mediocre football, they are having trouble getting to 40,000 season tickets... HD, Redzone, AC, Working interent, Replay, affordable food/beer...The stadium experience can't compete with this. I had tickets for over 10 years and I'll never buy them again...If I want to see a game in person, I'll go to stubhub.
not to mention the XBOX 360, PS3 experience for those days when the Jets really stink. If you are like me, you don't even want to watch the Redzone at that point. As I get older, the Jets are ruining football for me.
At least the Jets didn't force PSLs through the whole building. Gave us a chance to move upstairs, decide we hated the joint and dropped our tix after one season in Met Life. Had tickets in the lower bowl, since all the way back to Shea. And the fans in the expensive PSL seats aren't real Jet fans anymore. It's a shame we don't even have a homefield advantage when we're home.
Sorry to disagree but Hess was el cheapo & kept the prices low so he could attract the fans. Then when he found out his time was up he went hell bent to get a winner by hiring BP but in the end that failed as well & the NYJs continued to be losers since 01/12/69
