NFL history says tampering with a head coach is a 1st round pick offense. So what do you think they would have to give up?
I really do not believe they will find evidence of tampering but if they did it would be because someone involved (agent, woody, casserly or marrone) ran their mouth. Hypothetically if they found evidence and we lost the sixth overall pick and ended up with Marrone and Hackett this board and this already volatile fan base would go completely ape shit.
Weird, I don't recall ever complaining about him being a micromanager and not getting along with management, mainly because I can't speak to the credibility of articles filled with anonymous sources that came out after he left Buffalo. My complaints about Marrone are the objective facts that he hasn't been anything above mediocre his entire coaching career and there being zero indication that he will somehow come to the Jets and magically become a superior coach that gets us back to the playoffs and, ultimately, helps us win a Super Bowl. If given the choice of almost guaranteed mediocrity and a potential candidate who might be something better (although, admittedly, could also be below average) I would prefer to take a bit of a gamble and hope for something great;
Problem with tampering is that heresay qualifies as proof. The Bills only have to contact Sunday Night Football and find out who their source was that said the Jets were interested in Marrone. They then trace that source back and find out who told him. JUST INFERING you're interested in a contracted coach is tampering. Since the news came out that Pegula offered Marrone what he wanted, you can bet your ass the Bills leaked that and are setting up a case to bring to the commissioner.
The Bills owners are experienced business people. And new to the NFL so it's doubtful they would bring up frivolous charges. If they had no evidence. You think they're as clueless as Jets ownership.
There's nothing wrong with Jets interest in Marrone if it's after the fact. Woody when he heard about this said it was a pleasant "surprise." They can sign him, too. But if the Jets had contact with him before he legally opted out of his contract then it's probably tampering. Unless the contract stipulated he could talk to other teams during the opt out window period. I'm sure the lawyers will have a field day.
ESPN says that Marrone did not at all like the trade for Watkins. I know that's just part of the story, but it makes me feel good that he knew that was a horrible move.
Correct. But the Jets don't even have to contact him. If the Jets simply made it known through "sources" that they would be interested in Marrone, that's tampering. You can not say, or infer, that you would want another teams head coach. Problem is, SOMEONE said the Jets were interested in Marrone while he was still under contract. It was reported on Sunday Night Football and Marrone didn't opt out until Monday. The Pegula's are very intelligent people with the best of lawyers who have negotiated multi billion dollar oil deals. If there is something there, they'll find it.
Marrone had a window in his opt out clause. What was the time frame and did it allow him to talk with other teams.
It was a 72 hour window. I highly doubt the clause would allow him to talk to other teams though. That would be highly foolish of the Bills.
It wasn't the Pegula's contract but was his deal under Wilson. The buy out if ownership changes probably unusual but I'm not sure about that. It could be standard.
True. Just read the opt out article and at the end it says "Marrone is now a coaching free agent and free to speak to other NFL teams". That sounds like he wasn't able to before he officially opted out.
Depressing. Hope Woody didn't pay much for Casserly and Wolf advice because it looks like they mailed it if this is the best they can come up with. MacCagnan is part of an organization that has never drafted a good quarterback and Marrone will be a whipping boy from day one by both the media and fans. Marrone is about as exciting as paint drying.
