I definitely can't fault the guy for going after more money...damn skippy on that. The only way I could look at quitting a college program, mid-stream, as a bad thing is if he left some place like Alabama. You get a better offer and you are at "Cuse" you take the better job. My issue is he is a first time HC in the NFL in Buffalo. He is not being asked to leave...coming off the best season Buffalo has had in a decade, even if he didn't make the playoffs...how f'ed up of a situation was he in? In my opinion, the NY Jets are probably one of the top 5 most ineptly run franchises in all of pro sports. It must have been pretty bad in Buffalo for him to think this was a positive move. If, in fact, that is the case. We are all speculating. Maybe he quit to take the Oakland job... LOL!!!
Nothing against Schefter. But you have to know him for what he is. He's not just a journalist. He's a bona fide insider and facilitator. He is often a participant in the stories that he breaks. If Marrone lands a new gig anywhere I bet dollars to donuts that AS will be the first to report it.
Jets o-lines from 2002 to 2005: 2002 - Jason Fabini, JP Machado (Dave Szott injured in camp), Kevin Mawae, Randy Thomas, Kareem McKenzie 2003 - Jason Fabini, Dave Szott, Kevin Mawae, Brent Smith, (Randy Thomas lost to FA), Kareem McKenzie 2004 - Jason Fabini, Pete Kendall, Kevin Mawae, Brandon Moore, Kareem McKenzie ***** Curtis Martin 1,647 yards rushing - Jets 3rd in rushing in the NFL. 2005 - Injury wipeout with Kareem McKenzie lost to FA in addition. I remember 2002 to 2004 as being a period when the Jets were continually losing starters on the offensive line, Kerry Jenkins at LG and Ryan Young at RT after 2001, Dave Szott at LG injured in camp in 2002, Randy Thomas lost to FA after 2002, Dave Szott retired after 2003, etc. The offensive line was still pretty good considering those facts. Then Marrone got swept out in the stables cleanup after the talent base eroded heavily in 2005.
He's certainly an insider and an information trader, but he doesn't manipulate teams into making decisions, lol. Nor does he give out false information because, if he did, he wouldn't be respected and he would lose all credibility. Please.
The only bit of valuable information you've provided other than your biased opinion is this. That Schefter and Marrone have the same agent. For that thanks.
That 04 o-line was damn good. 1600+ yards from Curtis Martin at that time was the equivalent of a 2000 yard rusher as late in his career he wasn't a guy that broke a lot of tackles or made people miss. Most of those yards were simply from holes the o-line created.
No, I agree with all of that too. Just hard to know if the person the Jets hire is an actual upgrade for sometime. A change had to happen though. I don't like saying Marrone is a downgrade or Quinn is a downgrade. We won't know for awhile. Now Tom Cable? Okay that is a downgrade.
Not biased. I'm giving you the goods. Not a Bills fan either. I hate them. I read the board but post sparingly and not on any other board. I do comment on Jets/Bills issues because I get tons of Bills exposure where I live. I'm posting now because I am sure that DM is in the running for the Jets job and I also know that would be an unmitigated disaster. But don't take my word for it please. Ask (almost) any Billsfan. They would like nothing more than have us hire Doug Marrone.
I can't get myself sick over this, no matter who the choice is some will hate it. I can only hope that with both advisors on board and whats transpired here over the last 2 season, that Woody's learned a lesson. If that doesn't happen I'll just continue on, business as usual.
I know that I prefer GM first, and I would prefer a younger guy, unless an older, super coach descends from the heavens. Now Marrone might be fine. But someone has to run the organization. How can you run the organization if you cannot run the coach. To me, Marrone may be an okay coach, but running the Syracuse athletic program does not equate to running the Jets. So he should not be given that much respect. And Woody's desire to have the coach and GM report to him separately is just a boondoggle, an invitation to internecine strife. And I also suspect that Charlie Casserly actually wants the job, which disturbs me. He is kind of a walking conflict of interest. I pray that Woody prefers Wolf's opinion to Casserly's, but I fear, being Woody, that he will not.
Whoever we hire will be more organized but probably less talented defensive mind. Quiet as kept but the start of Rex's demise began when Pettine left his side. Pettine was the one who took care of all the mundane operational stuff which Rex didn't care for and/or not good at.
Come on bro, how bad can he be. You can't run a franchise into the ground that's already there. Plus we're used to crappy coaching.
The 2004 team is right up there with 1998 as the best overall teams I've had the pleasure to watch as a Jets fan. The early to mid-80's teams were always missing somebody important with an injury. If Klecko had stayed healthy his whole career at least one of those teams would be on the list too.
I know a lot of Bills fans, their biggest gripe was that he was too conservative and would not go for it on 4th short. No offense to Rex, who I love, but that sounds a lot more bearable than our coach having our team unprepared and undisciplined.
The 04 team was one of the most talented teams we ever had. I think the 04 team was more talented while the 98 team was better coached. I always felt Herm underachieved with 04 team; we should have had more regular and post season wins that year.
Chad got hurt. He played several games with an injured shoulder and then missed several games and then played the playoffs hurt. Herm didn't under-achieve, he just failed at a single decision late with the long FG attempt when he should have been playing for a few more yards to shorten it.
how did his offense do in the two games against your defense? enough said. btw, he was 3-1 against us.
Rex went for it on a 4th down last Sunday when it made zero sense. And It wasn't the first time. I'll take the guy who doesn't go for it with a 3 point lead and 4 minutes left in the game from his own 30.
