Pineda's change-up looks solid to me. Not just differential but some excellent diving action.

Andrew Eugene Pettitte signed a minor-league deal this morning for $2.5M.

Couldn't have a more random start to the weekend.

Great news and I would assume that means Hughes to the pen for sure..or to another team.

He's 39 and signed to a minor league deal. I'd bet he's just insurance at this point.

Guess the wife and kids weren't so big on having him around the house all the time.

I'm hearing he won't be ready til May so Phil will get a chance to prove himself, at least for a little bit.

Not sure why peoeple automatically assume Phil is the odd man out. Heck Nova hasn't done anything Hughes hasn't done.

Yeah, that's why I think it's just insurance for now.

If Nova or Hughes struggles, Pettitte can slide into his spot. Or maybe Hughes gets a chance to (re)build some trade value and they trade him thinking that two of Betances/Banuelos/Phelps/Warren can step in next year.

I'll take it more seriously if/when they make room for him on the 40-man.

ETA: And Hughes has looked really good this spring, too. Given his upside, I can't see shuttling him to the pen or selling low on him to replace him with a 39-year-old who's been retired for a year... I don't care what kind of legacy that 39-year-old has.

Nova as a starter has been better than Hughes as a starter.

I really hope signing Pettite, won't retard Hughes or Pineda's progression.
I mean I like this move if one of our SP go down, but otherwise I am very meh.

I hope I'm wrong, but I assume this is no coincidence:

A year after retiring, Andy Pettitte is back in pinstripes. The Yankees announced that they signed the 39-year-old left-hander to a minor league contract. Pettitte, a Hendricks Sports client, can potentially earn $2.5MM on the deal, which doesn't include incentives.

Yankees officials say Michael Pineda is a hard worker and his teammates say he’s mixing in well, Sherman reports. There’s been some concern about Pineda’s velocity and conditioning this spring, but Sherman points out that it’s wise to avoid definitive statements based on Spring Training information.

He was signed to a minor league contract, but I think the Yankees know that signing Pettitte means they plan on using him in the majors unless he can't pitch effectively anymore (making the minor league deal low-risk).

They absolutely plan on using him..all you had to do was listen to Cashman when they announced it and the fact Steinbrenner poneyed up more cash which put them over the budget to do it..that wouldn't have happened if they didn't expect him to start. It won't have any effect on Pineda unless he is hurt but it will on either Hughes or Garcia.
