You make some very good points. I guess its the optimist in me, but at least it happened early enough that Mangold will spend all summer with the first team. IMO this will make the transition easier than if Teague had gotten hurt say in week 3 of the season. Its also early enough that Teague won't be lost for the season. I could see the Jets looking to add a veteran center just in case though.
Not doubting that at all Tom. Just that if everyone on this board agrees that this is a rebuilding year...its not like we lost a in-his-prime Kevin Mawae to bring this kid around slowly. I just look at it this way. The kid will be getting most of the reps with the first team. The Jets will make a decision in July or August on either to go with him most of the time or not. Losing Trey Teague, who I never was crazy about in the first place, is a depth chart loss...and one the team will easily address before the season starts. As long as some of us can convince ourselves and not look back that this is a rebuilding year...Im just not going to sweat this one. Now if Mangold went down and Teague was healthy...that would bother me.
Just like Jaywayne said Teague is a depth chart loss. But the Jets still have Missant, who gained some experience in the NFLE and Katnik as back-ups. And I was for starting Mangold ASAP, so I don't think this is too bad
if mangold didnt start right away, I would be one angry cookie. you dont draft an offensive lineman in the first round and "ease" him in, especially when you are rebuilding. Its stinks that teague got hurt, but seriously he wasnt very good anyway. When we signed him I thought he might not even make it past TC cuts and for some reason, some of you guys worshiped him.
This injury might turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Not to say I'm happy he is injured, nor am I saying that this doesn't hurt the team. But this is the best time for it to happen, Mangold is now gonna get valuable first team reps that he would not have gotten if Teague didn't get hurt. We need Teague for depth and he will be back by the time the season starts to provide that..
Totally agree with the last 3 posts. Bringing in Mangold to a team that is playoff bound and more is a ton of responsibility. Bringing in Mangold to a team thats building for the future..lets him get his reps..let him screw up..let him learn..thats the bottom line. Nobody is happy about the injury. Just that anyone that "goes down" before the season starts justs give the coaching staff another player to look at..even if it means that our chances of winning the superbowl this year took a hit. (sarcasm..just saving the "you think we were going to the superbowl!! posts). Losing a QB any other year would be huge...just not this year...too many guys to get a read on.
Why do so many people think that because Mangold was a late first round pick he HAS to start at Center? Isn't it better to trust the CS, and let them decide how best to develop Mangold? I just don't think baptism by fire is the only, or best way to bring a rookie into the NFL. Having Teague on the practice field would have helped Mangold learn too. I don't see any silver lining here. In fact, if Mangold struggles, it could set the whole offense back. Will they have to simplify the blocking assignments? People expect too much of these kids just coming out of college..... especially when they judge the kid based on his draft position. I'd much rather see less pressure on Mangold at this point, as opposed to now having to take every snap (or just about) in the preseason. Two rookies starting on the O line.... this is gonna get ugly.
Look, stop trying to win some of us over by saying Missant or Katnik... Lets say for example Mangold beat out Teague in camp and won the job, solidified it...GREAT. That would give us an above-average backup if Mangold can't adapt right away...But now Katnik or Missant makes the world in Jets land better? Yikes.
T-bird, Not saying a silver lining...or theres a rush to put him in to the fire...gaining the reps during mini and then full camp wont hurt. I wouldnt be surprised either way if the CS decides to bring in another veteran to ease the transition..or if the CS says to hell with it...let the kid sink..then swim. My point was that this season is all about laying the foundation. Just not going to sweat us going into this season with a rookie getting some valuable snaps at center...because Im just not expecting much from this team..this year, to start with. I follow what your saying though.
